    3. Hello! I am new to this list. I am looking for the family of Virginia (Jinny) VANCE GILLESPIE. She was from either Mecklenburg County, NC or Guilford County, NC. She is my gggggrandmother. She was married to (Capt.) Thomas GILLESPIE, possibly of Mecklenburg, NC, who was born abt. 1754. They were married about 1790. They moved to East Tennessee and were part of the founding families of the Lebanon-in-the-Forks Presbyterian Church in Knox Co., TN. The following are their children: Sally married a Brock, Jinny married William Craighead, Ann married a Callison and Margaret (Peggy) Vance married William Black McNutt (this is my line). Thomas Gillespie Samuel Gillespie Early deed records show that Thomas sold property to a John Vance. Also, Thomas Gillespie and John Vance sold property to Jacob Yocum. Can anyone make a connection? 3. Hello everyone, I'm looking for parentage, sibs, etc for Franklin Remington Vance, born July 4, 1856. I don't know where he was born, but I know he lived in the Logan County, Ohio area. He married Ruth Loring (born July 14, 1859). The only child I have for them is my great-grandmother Harriet Ann Vance, born Jan. 11, 1894. She might have been born in West Mansfield, Ohio. I know she later lived in Bellefontaine (Logan County). Thanks for any help, Mike

    1. [VANCE-L] Missing Family!
    2. John Blair
    3. On the 1880 Buchanan County, VA Census is a family that seems to disappear and what makes the search harder is of course the lack of an 1890 census. I have looked in several surrounding counties in 1900 but can't find these Vances! Nancy Vance was the daughter of Jacob III and Jane McClanahan BLAIR, and the Blair's pretty much stayed in the area of Buchanan Co. that later became Dickenson Co. John Vance 38 Nancy Vance 36 John 16 Andrew 14 George W 11 Alexander 8 David 6 Does anyone connect? Seem to have hit a brick wall. Thanks for any help John Blair

    3. I have received a letter, From a lady in Oregon who saw my query concerning Benjamin Franklin VANCE, who was born in Tenn and died in Schuyler Co, Illinois. She does not have a computer, was at her son's house, using his. She states a relative of her's, who was born in 1880, had done research on his GLOVER / VANCE family. She says John F Vance's middle name was "Fleming", and that his wife was Sarah BUSH. He further had written in his notes, that the children who moved to Jefferson Co, Illinois were Martha (Vance) ROBERTS, Nancy (Vance) HAYNIE, Margaret (Vance) DAUGHERTY, Jane M (Vance) GLOVER, and an Ira VANCE, who she thinks might possibly be my Benjamin Vance. Some, lived in Wayne Co, Mo, before moving to Illinois. This is all new information to me, and I am interested in knowing if any of you other John F Vance researchers, had this information? I, of course, will be writing back to this new contact, to exchange information with her, so we can verify, etc. Sherry Morell Shelts [email protected]

    3. Brandi, I, too, am searching for Vances in Sangamon Co., IL. My Marcena (Marsina, etc) Vance married widower Alexander Reeves in Sangamon Co., IL in 1846. She was 18 and he was 54 with12 motherless children. She had 9 more children by him and another 3 children after he died about 1864, father unknown. Marcena was born Aug 1827 (approx) in what is now WV. She told her grandchildren that her father was a river-boat captain on the Ohio River and she had an Aunt Polly who had long red hair. That is all we know about her family. When her husband died in 1864 her farm in Fancy Creek Twp (just north of Springfield) was sold at a Sheriff's Sale to a Thomas Vance for $200 and he sold it back to her. We don't know what relationship he had to her. In the 1830s there was a William Vance (wife Chloe) in Springfield who was part owner of a river boat line on the Sangamon River. He had a sister Mary (Polly) who married an Eli Paine Hardin. Could this be the right family? Marcena named her children Rebecca, Harriet Josephine, James, Vashti, Barbara Ann, Alexander , Thomas A., John H., Abraham Lincoln, Daisy, Lorena Marcella, and Susannah Reeves. The last four, with their mother, ended up in Oregon and Washington in the 1870s. We assume she followed other family members here, but we don't know who. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? We would appreciate even the smallest feedback. Thanks, Carole in Portland

    1. [VANCE-L] William H. Vance
    2. I received my copy of the recent Vance Family Assoc. Newsletter and in scanning the pedigrees, I came across William H. Vance b. Nov. 30, 1775, Pa. who married Hannah Patterson. Does anyone know: 1) Where William lived in Pa. 2) The names of his children 3) Where he died in Pa. This is an outside chance for me. The mother of my G-Grandfather, William H. Neal b. Pa. 1847 (Death certificate ) 1851 (Census), was Mary Vance. I've hunted her husband for years. Even the association cannot come up with a Vance/Neal connection. Of course Neal could be Neel, Neil, Niell, etc. I'm beginning to think that maybe Mr. Neal was her 2nd husband. William H. Neal lived in Allegheny Co., Pa. but I do not know where in Pa. he was born. I would greatly appreciate any information or direction anyone might suggest. Thank you so very much. Clare in Fla.

She, >also a Mrs. George Vance, was born 17 Jun 1899. > Marjorie Vance Rice, Joliet, IL I can't remember if I gave great-grandma's maiden name! It was Margaret Little. I don't know about anyone else's Vance line, but the Scottish-Canadian Vances were very annoying because they all named their kids the same thing - boys were Robert, Joseph, George, James, John, David. They would have uncles named Robert, Joseph, George, etc. They would name their own sons Robert, Joseph, George, etc. They would have cousins named Robert, Joseph, George, etc. They would name their own kids Robert, Joseph, George, etc. I feel sorry for the men who had more than six sons...they would have to fall back on William and Samuel! There was a greater range of girls names but every generation had a couple of Margarets. It is extremely frustrating to find a "George Vance" and know that in that particular township you could throw a rock and hit at least half a dozen of 'em. I realize that certain names were popular but when everyone had large families and no imagination it makes researching difficult!! (I expect family picnics were rather difficult, too). 1. [VANCE-L] Obituary: Mrs. George Vance of Ratho, Ontario, Canada
    2. Naomi and Ruth Mills
    3. This list has been very quiet lately, so I thought I would post the following obituary of my great great grandmother which I just found on a recent research trip to Woodstock, in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada. Her husband, George Vance, was the son of David Vance (1783-1819) and Agnes Jones or Johns (1790-185) of Wigtonshire in Galloway, Scotland. George and several of his brothers emigrated to Oxford County around 1845 and over the years contributed greatly to the area's population. Descendents still own the original family farm. The Woodstock Daily Sentinel-Review. Saturday, January 14, 1905, p. 7, c. 3. Ratho, Jan. 13 – In the death of Mrs. George Vance of this place on Saturday evening the 7th of January, there was removed the very oldest pioneer of this district. Mrs. Vance had been in her usual health until three weeks ago but was recovering when she met with an accident on Tuesday of last week by falling. She sustained in the fall a slight cut near the corner of her eye which gave no trouble for a day or two when blood poisoning developed. Mrs. Vance was born in Wigtonshire, Scotland, on April 3rd, 1819. She, with her husband and two small children, emigrated to Canada in the year 1845. They landed at Quebec after a sail of eight weeks from Glasgow. They came to Hamilton by boat and made their way from there through the forest by an ox conveyance to lots eight and nine, two hundred acres, in the twelfth concession of Blandford on which lots they settled and lived during the rest of their lives. Here Mrs. Vance lived for a period of sixty years. It was solid bush when they came there, penniless in 1845. But they set industriously to work, made a small clearing, and built their log shanty in the wilderness. When in the old country, Mr. Vance was accustomed to smoking tobacco, but on coming to Upper Canada as Ontario was then called, he said he got smoke enough in logging and clearing his farm, without using tobacco, and so he gave up the habit. Following the custom of those early days the pioneers farther back in the bush used to go to the Township of Dumfries to obtain work and money sufficient to meet the needs of the family until a sufficient clearance on their own lands was made. Oftentimes when Mr. Vance was thus employed in Dumfries, Mrs. Vance with her children lived on the lot six weeks at a time without seeing an individual, so sparse was the population. Frequently, she would rouse the wild deer from their lair as she made her way over the logs in the bush and occasionally a bear would be seen. She strove sometimes to fell trees herself in Mr. Vance’s absence in order to obtain brouse for the cattle. In doing this, her custom was to cut all around the tree, beaver fashion. When a small clearance was obtained and sown in wheat, many a time she sat all night at the back of the shanty with the dog to keep the cattle from breaking through the brush fence and destroying the grain. Mrs. Vance was remarkable for the possession of an extremely rugged and strong physical constitution. Some twenty-five years ago, she in company with her husband, met with a serious accident, two miles south of Bright. The horse ran away and they were pitched out among the logs in the roadside. Both were seriously injured. Mrs. Vance had one of her legs broken in three pieces and the bone fractured through the flesh. The doctor did not set the limb for some days as he said she could not possibly survive the shock. However she completely recovered to become again the victim of a runaway accident at the old manse south of Ratho, which resulted in the death of Mr. Vance eleven years ago. Mrs. Vance is survived by a family of six sons and four daughters. They are David Vance of Tavistock, George of Light Street, Woodstock, Robert in New Ontario, Joseph and James on the old homestead, and John Vance of Tavistock, a member of the East Zorra council. The daughters are Mrs. Hirons of Melvin, Michigan, Mrs. Workman near Port Huron, Mrs. Elstone of Finkle Street, Woodstock, Mrs. Cowan of Ayr, and an adopted daughter Mrs. Keen of Paris. The funeral from her late residence on Tuesday afternoon of this week to the Ratho cemetery was very largely attended, her six sons acting as pallbearers. Rev. Mr. McCulloch, pastor of the Ratho and Innerkip churches conducted the services. Ruth E. Mills [email protected]

    1. [VANCE-L] HATFIELD/VANCE
    2. James H Granger
    3. There seems to have been a close relationship between the HATFIELD and VANCE families during the first half of the 1800s. At least three Vance girls married Hatfield boys. Rebecca Vance married Samuel Hatfield in 1818 in PA (probably Fayette Co.); Rosana Vance Married Elias Hatfield, also in PA; and Rachel Vance married Jeremiah Hatfield. I think at least one Hatfield girl married a Vance, also, but I can't find that one right now. Does anyone have these families in their ancestral line? I am particularly interested in Rosana Vance and Elias Hatfield. Thanks for any help you can provide. Jim Granger [email protected]
