Foster: Even though they are probably not related to me, I found a Handel Vance in Rockingham County, Virginia, while researching my Vance family. This Handel Vance, according to the late Katherine Bushman, historian from Augusta County, VA, was of German descent. My Vances are not. You might check the Rockingham County Web Page at http://home.rica.net/tel16/rham/ and the Augusta County Web page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/ Good luck! Bonnie

Some of you may have seen this before, but it bears refreshing our minds once in a while. ___________________________________________ HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR DASH?? I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone >From the beginning....to the end. He noted that first came her date of birth And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years. (1934 - 1998) For that dash represents all the time That she spent alive on earth... And now only those who loved her Know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; The cars..the house..the cash, What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard... Are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left, That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what's true and real, And always try to understand The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger, And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, And more often wear a smile... Remembering that this special dash Might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy's being read With your life's actions to rehash.... Would you be proud of the things they say About how you spent your dash? --Author Unknown Trail Tree Village 175 N. William VANCE, maybe by way of LA, came to AR before 1846. He married Frances WINCHESTER 2 Oct., 1846. They had children; Hope, Robert, Lucy, Agnes (my ggrandmother), Frank Edgar, May, Arthur, Stonewall I., William, Jr., and Frances W. between 1846 and 1866. William, Sr. died 5 Oct., 1892. His parents were said to have come to New Orleans, LA by ship from Belfast, Ireland. Does anyone else know this line? Many Thanks, -- Vance Roy [email protected] Surname Research: ROY, WILLIAMS, WHITTEN, VANCE, TATE, and SALMON
For an article that I am writing, I am trying to find photographs and manuscript materials on James William BINFORD (1845-1896), of Crawfordsville, IN and Paris, IL. He was married in Crawfordsville on or about 30 September 1868 to Mary Alice VANCE. James William Binford was born in Crawfordsville on 2 November 1845, and he died in Paris, IL on 22 May 1896. Mary Alice Vance, wife of J. W. Binford, was born in Crawfordsville, IN on 7 September 1845, and she died in Los Angeles, CA on 21 May 1928. The subject of my search, James William Binford, was a soldier in the Civil War who served under the command of Col. Eli Lilly. The two men later went into business together as druggists in Paris, Illinois. After a few years, Eli Lilly returned to Indianapolis, where in 1876 he founded the pharmaceutical company that still bears his name. The overall subject of my research concerns the years that Col. Lilly and Mr. Binford were business partners in Paris, IL (1869-1973). I have not yet located a photograph of James William Binford, and I am hoping that someone in the Vance or Binford families might have an image of him that I could use for publication. (I have posted similar messages to this one on "Binford" sites.) I look forward to hearing from anyone with information to share. Robert V. Hello List, This is my first query on the list and I have been hoping to see someone who is also researching my branch of the Vance tree. Elizabeth VANCE, d/o Abner VANCE and Susannah HOWARD, b. abt 1794 in Russell Co., VA; d. aft. 1850 in Logan Co., WV. She married (?) and had five (?) children including James "Big Jim" VANCE, b. abt 1830; d. abt 1888. James married Mary COLLINS (?), and had four (?) children incl. Jane VANCE, b. abt 1849 (RE: 1850 Census, Logan Co., VA). Jane married abt. 1868, Evans FERRELL. They had eleven children among whom was my grandfather, Allen FERRELL, b. 1889 in Thacker, Mingo Co., WV. Are there any other descendants of James and Mary COLLINS VANCE, who are researching this family and would be willing to share their information? It is my understanding that Elizabeth VANCE, d/o Abner and Susannah, never married and her children were born out of wedlock. Thank you for any help. Connie Chancellor [email protected]
