    3. I am searching for Vances in Sangamon Co., IL. My Marcena (Marsina, etc) Vance married widower Alexander Reeves in Sangamon Co., IL in 1846. She was 18 and he was 54 with12 motherless children. She had 9 more children by him and another 3 children after he died about 1864, father unknown. Marcena was born Aug 1827 (approx) in what is now WV. She told her grandchildren that her father was a river-boat captain on the Ohio River and she had an Aunt Polly who had long red hair. That is all we know about her family. When her husband died in 1864 her farm in Fancy Creek Twp (just north of Springfield) was sold at a Sheriff's Sale to a Thomas Vance for $200 and he sold it back to her. We don't know what relationship he had to her. In the 1830s there was a William Vance (wife Chloe) in Springfield who was part owner of a river boat line on the Sangamon River. He had a sister Mary (Polly) who married an Eli Paine Hardin. Could this be the right family? Marcena named her children Rebecca, Harriet Josephine, James, Vashti, Barbara Ann, Alexander , Thomas A., John H., Abraham Lincoln, Daisy, Lorena Marcella, and Susannah Reeves. The last four, with their mother, ended up in Oregon and Washington in the 1870s. We assume she followed other family members here, but we don't know who. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? We would appreciate even the smallest feedback. Thanks, Carole in Portland

    3. Very interesting indeed. If there was only a way to find out if my Vance is related to yours. ----- Original Message ----- From: Smith To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, October 22, 2000 10:49 PM Subject: trying to find family links Mat, I don't have anything on your Vance but have 2 other Vance's with very similar migration patterns in the same time frame that I had to respond to your message. William Vance b 1820 PA or VA, m. 1846 in Randolph Co IN to Margaret Wallace moved to Richland Co WI. Margaret's sister Anna married Jacob Vance in 1844 also in Randolph Co IN. The Vance families moved to WI in the 1850's along with the family of Isam and Mary (Polly) Wallace Margaret and Anna's parents. Probably just coincidence of names and places but as I said I had to write. Susan Smith [email protected]

    1. [VANCE] Alabama Vance
    2. Don and Mary Saban
    3. We have Alabama Vance's. Warren Vance, probably around 1833 in Georgia, was in Dale County AL by 1860, along with who we think is a brother of his - Wayne. Both served in the 15th AL CSA. Wayne was KIA, Warren was wounded. He returned to Dale County after the war. He was there in 1870, but had moved to Pike County by 1880 (or did the boundaries change?) Warren married Sarah Ann Goff. If anyone is interested, we have more on this line. Mary and Don in Wyoming >> Do you have any information of the parents of your Alexander Vance. My >line >> is James Alexander that descendents came to AL and then to MS in the early >> 1830 >> >> Bill Vance >> Houston Texas >

    3. We do not have information on his parents. My father has done quite a bit of research in census records and has found some possible leads that all have boys about the same age in the Shenandoah Valley area. Part of the problem, atleast in most cases, is that they did not record any of the children's names until they got married or something else happened. This is why we hit the dead end. I have all the information on his children to the present, but not what we need. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 21, 2000 7:03 PM Subject: Re: [VANCE] Trying to find family links > Do you have any information of the parents of your Alexander Vance. 1. [VANCE] Missing Vance Family!
    2. John Blair
    3. On the 1880 Buchanan County, VA Census is a family that seems to disappear and what makes the search harder is of course the lack of an 1890 census. I have looked in several surrounding counties in 1900 but can't find these Vances! Nancy Vance was the daughter of Jacob III and Jane McClanahan BLAIR, and the Blair's pretty much stayed in the area of Buchanan Co. that later became Dickenson Co. 1880 CENSUS John Vance 38 b.Wise Co. son of David & Elizabeth Rose VANCE Nancy Vance 36 b. Russell Co. dau. of Jacob & Jane McClanahan Blair Married 1861 Buchanan Co. VA. John 16 Andrew 14 George W 11 Alexander 8 David 6 Does anyone connect? Seem to have hit a brick wall. I have already researched the 1900 Census for most of these Counties and they are not there....Where did they go? Thanks for any help John Blair

    3. Arlie - Thank you so much for filling in quite a few holes in my family tree. I didn't have any dates or ancestors for Andrew Vance and Ann Ramey. I also was missing the brothers and sisters of Mary. As far as my "Grandfather", I was actually quoting my Grandmother, Cora Vance Weber, whose grandfather, John Brown Vance, was the son of Jordon Vance (born 1791) and Mary Vance (born 1791) who were married in 1812. Mary Vance is the sister of your Samuel C. Vance. My Grandmother mentioned that Mary Frances (or Francis Mary) Vance was a cousin to her grandfather, and now I know that she was the daughter of Mary Vance's sister, Elizabeth! In addition, my Grandmother's other grandfather was Moses Jasper Bradford, whose older brother Isaac Neely Bradford married Mary Frances Vance. Through the Bradford Family Rootsweb site, I've also been in touch with a decendent of Moses and Isaac's sister, Sarah! I can help you a bit with the ancestors of Isaac Neely Bradford. (again according to my Grandmother) Adam Bradford (died 1849) came to Missouri from Snow Hill, Worcestor County, Maryland, by way of Bradfordville, Kentucky. His first wife, Nancy Cole, had died as well as some or all of their 4 children. (I've heard that he arrived in Missouri with one quite mature son.) His second wife was Frances Neely from Bradfordville. Her father was Isaac Neely and her mother, Ann Coppedge (this branch leads to some interesting history). There's a lot of interesting information about Frances Neely's ancestors on the seb site: ancestry.com. I found it by searching for Moses, but you could start with Isaac Neely Bradford. Glad to be in touch, cousin! Kathryn Hill Berkeley, California

    1. [VANCE] Mary Vance - early 1800's
    2. I am still looking for a Mary Vance who ca 1838 married a Neal/Neel/Neill/etc. I don't know if she was single or a widow at that time. She was b. ca 1810; d. 1874, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa. The census says that she was b. in Pa. but you know how those records were - questionable. There could be a connection with the Kelly family or the Taylor family in Pittsburgh. Thanks for any tidbit that may help me. Believe me, nothing is unimportant. Clare
