First, from the census of Ward Twp, Randolph County, Indiana, 1850: Pence, Thomas 32 M Pump W'ker OH Pence, Elizabeth 26 F OH Pence, James 6 M OH Pence, Sarah 4 F OH Pence, Louisa 2 F OH Pence,William 1 M IN Vance, George 74 M Farmer PA Vance, Margaret 66 F PA Thomas Winters Pence and Elizabeth Vance were also in Randolph County in 1860, but the George and Margaret Vance were not, nor were any of the other Vances except Nancy (see below). George's age above places his date of birth as 1776. The Pences were in Tazewell, Illinois, before going to York County just before 1880. I know that some Vances went to York County (Melissa's cousin - _probably her cousin_ - Frank Vance and his wife, Mary, were witnesses to her marriage to Thomas Houston, for example). Thus it is possible that George and Margaret went there with them. But York, Nebraska, really would have been settled until after George would have been 100 years old - so my suspicion is that the George Vance who died in York County (if one did) would be a brother to Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Winters Pence. The other homesteaders would also be brothers or nephews of Elizabeth. FYI, here are the Vances living in Randolph County in 1850: Vance, Andrew State : IN County : Randolph Co. Is a description of the land given (section, range, township)? What date? If so, you can obtain a copy of the case file from the National Archives. For homestead lands, these case files usually contain quite a bit of family information. BTW, the name is, I believe, Thomas WinterS - as he likely was named for a well-known and admired minister in the area of Ohio were Thomas was born. The minister was Thomas Winters and there is quite a bit written on him . Find York Historical on the web. They are good about responding to questions. And remember, in the Bible for one of the childreno Thomas and Elizabeth, there is a note that her family name was probably originally Wentz. As Bentz become Pence, so does Wentz become Vance. 2. I have no books on the Vance family. I do not know about Vida Velton Vance's book. Could you please tell me the name of her book? I sent for and have a copy of John Vance's will - WB#1, p. 8. where in he names his children. I also have a copy of the 1832 will of Alexander Vance - Findley Twp., Allegheny Co., Pa. He mentions only an uncle, 2 brothers and a sister; and his father was mentioned but not named. Col. William Crawford married John Vance's sister. There were several Col. William Crawfords and this one is the famous one who was burned at the stake. If you check the children of John Vance (d. 1760) you will find that he had a son John (m. Margaret White), as well as a son Alexander; and other children. Since Alexander is not a name that is used in my line, I did not research Alexander's family except to know that he had a dau. Jane who married her cousin David. A lot of info comes from the VFA. Are you a member? Sorry I could not address you properly but you did not give your name. 3. I've been watching this subject for a while and might as well add a little something now....for what it's worth. My Marcena (aka Marsina & Marcella) Vance was born in what is now WV in about 1827. She said that she had an Aunt Polly, her father's sister. Polly is a nickname for Mary. Unfortunately I don't know Marcena's father's name. Marcena married widower Alexander Reeves in Sangamon Co., IL in 1846...too soon to be found on a census with her parents. Her children were named Rebecca, Harriet Josephine, James, Vashti, Barbara, Alexander, Thomas A. (dy), John H., Abraham L., Daisy, Lorena M., and Susie. It could be that some of her family's names could have already been used on her husband's first 12 children. Marcena's father was a "river-boat" captain and the family had lived in OH for a while. I don't know how Marcena happened to make it to IL. Also.....there was a Mary "Polly" Vance daughter of William Vance and Barbara Grider of Lancaster Co., PA, Rockingham,VA and Garrard KY. This William was the son of a Wentz from Heidelberg. This Polly married Eli Paine Hardin 1820 in KY. Has anyone out there heard of my Marcena, et al? Carole

    2. Kelly, Thanks so very much for responding. Did your Sarah Vance m. a Neal (etc.) or was your Sarah a Neal (etc.) I have a lot of Vance info and a lot of Neal (various spellings) info. I might be able to help you if you give me some more info. Where and when? My Neal is William H. Neal b. 1847 (according to his tombstone and death certificate) and 1851 according to the census. His mother was Mary Neel (1850 & 1870 census - Niel according to 1860 census). Mary (Vance) according to his death certificate. They were all b. in Pa. according to the census.
