Also I was wondering if anyone knows what their children died from.I ask this b/c they lost SO many children. I am 24 and have Cystic Fibrosis and was wondering if maybe this is what the children died from or if it was something else.... Becki
Has the old folk song "Ballad of Abner Vance," or "Vance's Lament," etc. ever been recorded? If so by whom? I've seen the words but I've never heard it sung. The ballad was written by Abner Vance of Abington, Russell Co. and Logan Co., VA while he was sitting in jail for the murder of a man "who done his daughter wrong." He was hung in 1819. Thanks, Carole
Guess I should have said that they had lived in Labatte Co., KS but they were supposed to have died East of Cherryvale, Montgomery Co....which would just about put them in Labatte Co. > James Vance died 8 May 1872 and is said to be buried in the Harmony Grove Cemetery. James Vance died 8 May 1872 and is said to be buried in the Harmony Grove Cemetery. What town is the cemetery near? His wife, Barbara Miller Vance is buried at the same cemetery....she died in 1897. Do their grave stones give their birth dates? There were so many men with the name of James in the area I'm not sure if I'm barking up the right family tree. I'm looking for the James who was supposed to be the father of Thomas J. and George W. Vance who lived near Timber Hill in Osage Twp in 1870. Thanks! Carole in Portland, OR
Are there any probate records for James H. Vance, son of Abner Vance and husband of Barbara Miller? I believe that he may have died in Cherryvale, Montgomery Co., KS but lived for a while in Sangamon IL, and Boone and Logan Co., VA. He allegedly died about 1872. If the probate record exists can it be accessed online? Thank you, Carole Hammond
I just made a big breakthrough! I found my Marcena (Marcennia) Vance as the daughter of James Vance and Barbara Miller and I am hoping that there are others out there working on this same line. Marcena was born in what is now WV in about 1828 and at some time around 1840 the family moved to OH and then on to IL in the early 1840s. In 1846 she married widower Alexander Reeves of "McKinnie's Settlement", abt 4 miles NW of Springfield in Sangamon Co., IL. Her siblings were: Michael, Susan, James, Agnes, William, Polly, Elizabeth, Nancy, Isaac, George W. and Thomas Jefferson Vance. Thomas J. Vance and his wife Emily Laswell, moved with his brother George "Washington" Vance and some of her married sisters to Osage Twp, Labette Co., KS in the late 1860s. The parents, James and Barbara Vance died in Cherryvale, Montgomery co., KS. Thank you, Carole Hammond, Portland, OR
Could anyone tell me where I can locate a Coat of Arms for the Vance, name. Thank You Mary F. Vance Shaw
The 1850 Pittsburgh, Pa. City directory lists a Thomas Vance as a cabinet maker living Federal, Allegheny City, Allegheny Co., Pa. The 1850 Census lists him as 25, b. Ireland, wife Susanna. He was living with John Boyd and family who were all b. in Ireland. Does anyone know anything about Thomas Vance's siblings? Does anyone know anything about this Thomas Vance? Thanks so very much, Clare
The 1850 Pittsburgh, Pa. City directory lists a Jane Vance as a widow living rear 18 Quarry St. I cannot find her on the 1850 census. Does anyone know anything about this lady. Thanks, Clare
Who is John Vance b. 1801 TN and married to Marian (Mary Ann) Swaggerty? They migrated to Washington County, AR around 1837? This is my brick wall....someone help please!!! 8-) Jann Oklahoma City
Who was the Thomas J. Vance who married Emily Laswell in Sangamon Co. in July 1864? Was this the same Thomas J. Vance who acted as guardian to the children of widow Marcina Vance Reeves of Cantrall, Fancy Creek Twp, Sangamon Co. IL? What was their relationship and did they have other relatives in the area? Carole, Portland OR
We are trying to nail down the parents of Marcena (Marcella? Marsina?) Vance who was born in what is now WV (parents b. VA) in about Aug 1827-28. Marcena married widower Alexander Reeves of Springfield and Cantrall, Fancy Creek Twp., in 1846. She was 18, he was 53. Marcena's father was said to be a fur trapper in the winter and a "riverboat captain" for the rest of the year, perhaps on the Ohio River. The Vance family may have lived in other states before getting to Sangamon Co. by 1846 or earlier. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions? Thanks, Carole Hammond, Portland, OR

Hoping someone can help us clear something up. My 4th g-grandfather was Mathew Vance. In doing some casual searching I have found him listed as the son of Samuel Vance and Sarah Colville, and also as the son of John Vance and Jane Black. Does anyone have the correct information on Mathew? Our Line: Mathew Vance (1764-1840) +Thomas Vance (1800-1851) ++Samuel Carson Vance (1837-1891) +++Thomas Munson Vance (1867-1952) Thanks in advance. Barbra Brighton, MI
I'm afraid that I can't help your with your Mathew's parentage but I am interested in your Thomas Vance, son of Mathew. You didn't mention what state they were in but I have Marcena Vance, b. abt 1828 in what is now WV. Thomas J. Vance bought the widow Marcena Reeves' farm at a Sheriff's auction in Fancy Creek Twp., Sangamon Co., IL in about 1864 and sold it back to her for the same price. We have no idea how he was related to Marcena. Could he have been her brother? Do you have the names of your Thomas's siblings? In her later years Marcena used the name Marcella.
