Are there any bible records for the family of James Vance and Barbara Miller who were born in what is now WV, and OH? In an old letter their granddaughter indicated that her grandmother had also been married to a Glassburn and I was wondering if anyone else had any information on that? Thanks, Carole
Would this Vance family by chance be very close to Coffee, KS? I don't know if Coffee is a county or city. I am looking for John Vance b. 1801 who married Marion (Mary Ann) Swagerty. Thanks so much for any help. John is an absolute brick wall for me. Jann Oklahoma City
Labette and Montgomery counties are in Kansas and Sangamon Co. is in Illinois. Sorry for the lapse in good sense! Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 4:34 PM Subject: James & Thomas J. Vance obit. lookup Would there have been an obituary or article in the newspaper for the death of James Vance who had lived in Osage Twp, Labette Co., according to the 1870 census. He died 8 May 1872 and is buried in the Harmony Grove Cemetery near Dennis. His granddaughter, Mary Alice Vance Newton, said that he died 4 miles East of Cherryvale, which would put his death place about 2 miles into Labatte Co. A man that I believe to be his son, James H. Vance lived in Cherryvale in 1920 and his son George W. Vance was farming his place. I don't know where or when he died. Thomas J. Vance died 25 Mar 1913 but I don't know where and I don't think that he is buried at Harmony Grove Cemetery....or if he is there is no tombstone. Since these people either lived in Cherryvale or very near it would their death notices have been in the local newspaper or was there one in Dennis or another town in Labatte Co.? Would some kind soul have time to look it up for me? Especially the James who died in 1872. Thanks so much, Carole in faraway Oregon

For approximately three weeks in May and June John Giacoletti and I made a research trip to Northern Ireland to gather information on some of the Defenders of Derry. I said I would post our findings to the various lists that had been contacted prior to our departure. To view all of our posts please go to the rootsweb.com main page and find the link to "threaded archives" Type in COWAN and search June and July 2002 and you will find some really interesting posts describing our research adventures. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Prior to the trip I offered four obscure, out-of-print publications that should be included in every Ulster Presbyterian's genealogical library. They all have either expired copyright provisions or, in the case of the Hagy thesis, I have the author's permission to reproduce the document. The publications are: "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism" and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery," 1905,1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast 211 pages We met JB Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprint and he said these books are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research. Books contain lists of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, which have never before appeared in print. "Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691," by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Contains biographical sketches (1200+) of the Defenders of Derry "A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defence of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes," by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 311 pages. Full of genealogical information about the families who were at Derry. "Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered, this covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. And a new addition: "The Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom" A Study of the Church and Her People, Howard McKnight Wilson, Fisherville, 1954 This book contains more genealogy of the early settlers of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties Virginia than any other. Baptismal records of the Rev. Craig and detailed analysis of many of the early families from the 1740's on. Please contact me privately at [email protected] for details on how to acquire these materials. It is very slow and cumbersome to contact each list individually so in the future I will be putting these and other items I deem valuable on abebooks.com Once again, I will be happy to answer any questions that have to do with the migration of Scots-Irish people from Ulster to Pa, Virginia and Tennessee. But remember, I probably don't know who your mamma is, I had a hard enough time figuring out who mine was. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105
Can anyone tell me which churches in Sangamon Co., IL the following ministers were with and where they lived? Rev. Jones married Thomas J. Vance and Emily Lasswell, 1864. Richard Smith, M.G. (?) married Alexander Reeves and Marcena Vance, 1846. With any sort of luck I may be able to find the church records of these marriages and find the parents names. Desperately yours, Carole
Does anyone out there have a Marcena/Marsina/Marcennia or Marsena Vance, b. 1828 in what is now WV? It is said that she may be the daughter of James Vance and the sister of Thomas Jefferson Vance, b. abt 1841 OH. Marcena was married in Sangamon Co., IL in 1846 to Alexander Reeves of Gardner Twp. and Thomas J. Vance was with her after 1862 and married one of her neighbors, Emily C. Lasswell, in 1864. After Alexander Reeves died Marcena moved to Fancy Creek Twp in about 1865 and then to Oregon in the mid-1870s. Tom and Emily Vance moved to Labette Co., KS in about 1867. Do any of these people show up in your records? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Carole
In the 1870 census reports of Osage Twp, Labette Co., KS I have found the following men, relationships unknown: James Vance, 72, b. abt 1797-98, VA, d. 1872, bur. Dennis, Labette Co., KS Living with Mary, 41 and kids of mixed ages..like "blended" family. Isaac Vance, 35, b. abt 1834-35, OH, living alone. Is he the one who died later in 1870? Thomas J. Vance, 28, b. abt 1841-42, OH. With wife Emily Lasswell, married Sangamon Co., IL 1864. George W. Vance, 31, b. VA, living alone next door to Thomas J. Vance. In the 1900 Census of Cherryvale, Montgomery Co, KS: George W. Vance, b. 1863 OH, wife Hannah, married 10 years, son Marion, living with father: James H. Vance, Mar 1829, WV, widower. Is this the James H. who was married to a Polly Miller? Question: How are these people related? The family names are similar to those of the son and grandsons of Abner Vance, Sr. of WV but everything I have seen has them staying in WV. Note: Also in the Harmony Grove Cemetery, near the village of Dennis, is a stone for Barbara Vance that says that she is the mother of Thomas J. Vance. She d. 31 August 1897; 92y, 11m, 23 days. I don't know if she is buried with the James Vance mentioned at the beginning of this message (the only one in this cemetery) who d. 8 May 1872; 73 years. I love a mystery but this is almost too much! I'd love any sort of feedback and suggestions on this. Carole in Portland, OR
Does anyone have access to either the Springfield, IL newspaper of 1864 or of Athens, Menard Co., IL? There were family connections in Menard Co. Thomas J. Vance and Emily C. Lasswell were married 7 Mar 1864 in Sangamon Co. and I am hoping that someone could do a look-up for me. We already know Emily's parents were Thomas and Sally but we are hoping to find her inlaws' names...the parents of her husband Thomas J. Vance. I would sure appreciate help on this. Thanks, Carole in OR
Who were the grandchildren of Harriet J. REEVES and Oliver G. HARVEY of Springfield, IL? Harriet and Oliver were married in Springfield in 1866 and she married James WILSON after Oliver died in 1879. 1. Lillie A. HARVEY m. John McCLURE in 1896 and had John E., Jr. and Jacob H. McCLURE. 2. Franklin HARVEY m. Hattie Belle Conlee in Menard Co. in 1893. 3. Oliver S. (L.?) HARVEY, of Springfield, may have been the father of Gladys Nellie HARVEY who was married to a Mr. Bryant by 1927. 4. Claud M. HARVEY, 1876-1947, m. Loretta Overstreet and had Ethel, Josephine, Edward, Raymond and Russel HARVEY and lived in Springfield. It isn't known if Harriet and her 2nd husband James Wilson had any children together.
I am looking for information on Jane Vance. Jane was born about 1825, married Benjamin Perry in TN. Does anyone know who her parent were? when / where she died? children? Any information would greatly be appreciate. I am also looking for Benjamin middle name. Margaret

Is there a James Vance in the book Biographies of Logan Countians who would have been born about 1798? My James died in Osage Co., KS in 1872 at the age of 73. James was born in VA and was married to a Barbara. They had some children in what is now WV, moved to OH where at least one son, Thomas Jefferson Vance was born in Jackson Co., and then on to Sangamon Co. IL. I don't know where he went from there but some of his sons, Thomas and George W. Vance and James, Jr. turned up in Labette Co., KS in the late 1860s. In the 1870 Census of Timber Hill, Osage Twp, Labette Co., KS there was a James Vance who was the right age (72) living with a Mary (41) and some young children. Just north of there, in a Dennis, KS cemetery is the grave of a Barbara Vance who was supposed to be the mother of Thomas J. Vance.....but she didn't die until 1897....much later than James. Mary appears to be a 2d wife...but what happened to the 1st one? Divorce??? Some have claimed that this the same James Vance who was supposed to be a son of the Abner Vance who was hanged in 1819 in VA. I have seen no proof one way or another and I would welcome anything on either one of these men. Thank you! Carole
>>Sangamon Co. Birth Record 1860-1878<< I was surprised to see that there were birth records kept in Sangamon Co., as early as 1860 so I am really excited to think that one of our big family mysteries may be solvable. Marcena Vance Reeves' husband Alexander died in Gardner Twp., Sangamon Co., in Aug. 1862. The big mystery is who might be the father of the three girls who were born to Marcena after his death. She sold their farm in Gardner Twp in Oct 1865 and she was in Fancy Creek Twp in the 1870 census. Lorena Reeves was born on 21 Apr 1866. Susannah/Susan was born in about 1869 Daisy was born in about 1871 I haven't found any marriage record after 1862 for Marcena under Vance or Reeves and she and the girls were using the Reeves name when they moved to Portland, OR in the mid 1870s with Abraham, the last of 9 children sired by her husband Alexander. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Carole in Portland, OR
Is there a will or probate record for James Vance who is buried in the Harmony Grove Cemetery near the village of Dennis, Labette Co., KS. He may have died near Cherryvale, Montgomery Co., KS. Would this information be online where I could find it? Thanks, Carole
It is said that my 2nd gr-grandma may be the daughter of James Vance, son of Abner Vance and Susannah Howard. I am looking for proof of this and I hope that one of you might have a key piece of information that will confirm it. Marcena Vance was born in what is now WV in about 1828, her family moved to OH for a while and then they moved on to IL where she married in 1846 at the age of 18 to Alexander Reeves of Sangamon Co. I have seen where a Marcennia Vance, daughter of James Vance and Barbara Miller, had a brother Thomas J. Vance among many others. My Marcena was assisted after the death of her husband by a Thomas J. Vance. I believe that this Thomas later lived and died in Labette Co., KS with his wife Emily Lasswell. I need some proof that my Marcena is James and Barbara's daughter. Does anyone out there have info on what became of James? Thanks, Carole

Our Northern Ireland adventure is over, the answers found and it is time to move on; to Stirling in Scotland with the prospect of new "finds"and more adventures. For almost six years I have researched the Presbyterian Ulsterman and in doing so found four obscure out of print publications that should be included in every library. Before my focus changes to Scottish research I am offering to interested researchers ONE last time the opportunity to purchase (cost of copies and postage) the following items. All items have either expired copyrite provisions or in the case of the Hagy thesis I have the authors permission to reproduce the document. They are: The Laggan and its Presbyterianism and In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery, 1905, 1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast, Davidson & McCormack, 54 King St. 211 pages. On our trip we met JB Shannon age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprinting and he was a window to the past. He is the last living person who had anything to do with these books and says they are still the BEST source for Ulster presbyterian research. From Lecky I quote, "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places...." If I send this post to your list it means your surname is listed in the appendix. Cost: $25.00 Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691, by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London 350 pages. Contains the following biographical sketches: (1500) 1. The leaders of the County Associations, who with their levies took part in the Preliminary operations and contributed much of the man power for the Defence. 2. The Apprentice Boys and those responsible for shutting the gates on the 8th Dec. 1688. 3. The actual Defenders during the 105 day siege (over 1200 genealogical sketches) 4. Those engaged in the relief of the city. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Months worth of reading and packed with great genealogy. Cost: $25.00 A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defense of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes, by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Dicese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and Capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 The historical poems are family genealogies about those who were at Derry and where they came from. Along with "Fighters of Derry" these two sources contain more actual genealogical information than any others that I have seen. 311 pages Cost: $25.00 Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, A thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee St. University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James W. Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered it covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. If your ancestors came through southwest Virginia this document is the history of your family. Contains information of specific families as well as the farmers, speculators, artisans, and preachers who resided there. Lots on the Indian battles that were a daily feature of life on the frontier. Names like Russell, Walker, Porter, Cowan, Houston, Boone, Montgomery, Fraley, Thompson, Anderson, Kilgore and 50 or so other "Scotch-irish" families make this an invaluable resourch for your family history. Cost: $25.00 I only post these offerings to a tiny fraction of the lists and only to those lists where your surnames are mentioned. After I make the offering I insubscribe because my e-mail box will fill up in about ten minutes. I am always on the Cowan and Wigton-Walker lists and you can e-mail me at [email protected] and ask any question you like. I will always attempt to answer your questions although it is unlikey I hold the key to who your great grandma was. If you are interested in the results of our trip to Donegal and Belfast please check the COWAN-L archives and you will see the posts we made during the last week or so. Thanks for your interest and I hope making this information available has helped some of you. I always enjoy getting e-mails from fellow researches. Also a big thanks to those of you who sent family information to us before our trip. It was appreciated and a special thanks to Alex Latta from Canada who turned us on to James Fleming. The trip would not have been the same without that piece of the puzzle. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105 (704)847-4081
