Hi Shasta, Below is the obituary of Samuel Van Orsdale, husband of Rebecca King. Following the obit. are notes we took from index books of Van deaths at the Iowa Historical Society a few years ago, but did not follow up on. We would be happy to look for obituaries or death records for any of them if you would like us to. Just let us know. Thank you for checking your files for our elusive Leah. From the Glenwood, Iowa, newspaper dated February 18, 1908 Samuel Van Orsdale, one of the old settlers and highly respected citizens of Mills county, died Saturday morning at the home of his son one mile east of Hillsdale. He had been taken about a week before with the grip. He was in his 84th year and had always led a very active life. He was born near the famous town of Gettysburg, Penn., on Jan. 19, 1825, and died nears Hillsdale, Iowa, Feb. 15, 1908. He was married May 13, 1847, to Rebecca King who died about six years ago. To them were born ten children, 4 boys and six girls. Of these four survive, as follows: Wm. Van Orsdale, Hillsdale. Mrs. Charles Reasoner and Mrs. Nathan Miller, Glenwood. Mrs. H. L. Brooks, Boone, Nebraska. One sister resides in Pennsylvania and another in Illinois. Two brothers live in Montana, one at Great Falls and another at Waterloo. The deceased came to Mills county in August, 1855, and homesteaded the land on which he continued to make his home till the hour of his death - nearly 53 years. He served three years and three months in the civil war as a member of company F, 15th Iowa. He was with Sherman on his march to the sea and was in the battle of Appomattox when Lee surrendered to Grant. He joined the Methodist church when a young man and for more than a half century was identified in an active way with the church at Hillsdale, also with the church organizations at the old towns of Mt. Olive and Loudon, the predecessors of Hillsdale. The funeral was held at the Hillsdale Methodist church on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. E. Goodrich. The pall bearers were old soldier comrades. A good man gone, can be truly said of him. ------------------- Notes: Deaths - Sara Laura Van Orsdall, 75 yrs, born Oct. 16, 1860, died Jan. 10, 1936 , Hastings, Iowa.
