Arthur is the historian for Conowago. They are a little difficult to read as they are white on black, but I recall I kept seeing this mark at the end of Lambert Dorlands name. Lambert Dorland as you may or may not recall returned from Kentucky and is listed for the years 1787-1789 next or with his Uncle Garret Dorland in Berwick Twp. Following Lamberts name for each year is Phd. I also noticed that in the year 1789 Lambert is listed under single men. So I wrote to Arther and this is what he told me: the mark PHd following the name of Lambert Dorland in the Tax Duplicate is PHd, to mean, per head, i.e.. a flat tax, males over 21 usually not landed, single and WIDOWERS. Others on the list with the same designation , paid the same tax, i.e.. 15 shillings, 9 pence. To me this clarifies and explains the 10 year gap between son John born in 1785 and son Isaac born in 1795. As I had mentioned previously Lambert returned from Kentucky after 1783 or that year bringing with him the papers and deeds belonging to his father John which were returned to his cousin Gerrit Dorland in whose family they remained. Therefore I feel it is safe to say that Martha Fenosdol, Thenosdol, Vanosdol was his second wife and not his first. In the Darland Bible Records is stated Marthy born in the year 1760 in New Jersey, we know not where. Of course the year 1760 can cover 10 years. We also don't know whether she was the daughter of an Isaac Vanarsdal or the widow of an Isaac VanArsdale. But it seems clear to me that Lamberts first wife, the mother of John b. 1785. Judy Cassidy
