Here is my most frustrating VAN ancestor: Martha Van Arsdale a.k.a. Martha Fernsdol Martha Van Arsdale Martha Vanosdol Marthy Fernasdal Martje Van Arsdalen Mary Van Arsdol Born abt 1760-1765. Probably born in Pennsylvania. OK, if you really want it. But first, I keep getting two copies of every E-mail, how do I get rid of one? OK, brick wall #1 Simon Van Arsdale Facts- Daughter named Anna Maria Van Orsdale, b abt 1805-7, married Moses Stillwell from Gt Edwards Ill(Warsaw) Son named Valencourt Van Orsdale, b 8-25-1817, at French Village, St Claire, Ill. Wife was Catherine Claypool, b Dec 31, 1784, died 1821 Simon was a frontier trader issued a trade license in 1817 by the Governer of Missouri territory to deal with the Indians In 1824, Moses Stillwell and Maria took Valencourt to St Louis and then up to Keokuk Iowa in 1827, where Moses ran a frontier trading post Relevant rumurs and data(many references come from Rev Charles G Van Ausdall paper published 1983) Very possibly the trouble maker in Missouri in 1807-1810, unless there were two Simon's in Missouri around this time Probably was the Simon Vanorsdale that serve in war of 1812 from St Clair County, Ill Probably the head of household in the 1818 and 1820 Illinois census of St Clair County Possibly brother or son of Richard and Cornelious listed in the same survey Possibly has a son named Amos(referred to in the story of Valencourt moving to Iowa) Possibly had a son named Benjamin that served in Black Hawk Indian War. Story in our family is that Simon died in 1824, but he might have married Sophie Savage on June 2, 1824 and sent Valencourt to live with sister. Several Van Arsdales moved to the Lee County Iowa some years after Valencourt, I suspect these are all near relatives, cousins and brothers of Simon. Brick Wall #2(well, maybe just a small, irrevalent fence) Valencourt got married to Louisa Muir in 1833. Louisa Muir was the daughter of an army doctor(Dr Muir) and a Keokuk Indian. I find no clue on Dr. Muir, who went to Edinburgh University. Up to recently, I found nothing else on this marriage until I got a copy of Rev Charles G Van Ausdall paper. According to the 1836 census, Valencourt has a wife and two children, but in the 1850 census they are no longer there. A couple of side notes, Dr Muir resigned his commission during the Blackhawk wars because of the prohibition of Indians, etc... I don't know if his daughter and two grandchildren left with him, died or what. In 1859, it is reported that Valencourt Van Orsdale married for the first time to Louisa Wright, whose father was a "big Irishman and I believe her mother was an Indian(you can now understand some of our confusion-two wifes, same first name, both half-breeds). I am not sure if he is quoted as saying that or not, but that is the idea I get. Anyway, I am looking for any info on his first wife, kids and father in law.

Oops! In my excitement to agree with Terri's idea I forgot to send my information. My "brick wall" is finding the parents of Levi VanArsdale, a blacksmith, born ca1800 Drakesville/Chester, Morris County, NJ. He married 1) Abigail Goble ca1825 and they had a son, Abner G. who also became a Master blacksmith with several apprentices including his young half-brother, Nathaniel Horton VanArsdale (my g-g-grandfather). Grandpa Nathaniel's mother was AnnEliza Horton, whom Levi married in the Chester, Morris County area on Sept. 26, 1833. Nathaniel was born in March, 1838. To confuse the issue there are TWO Nathaniel H. VanArsdales: my g-g-grandfather and Nathaniel Hixson Van Arsdale... and they were BOTH born in 1838... I do have one clue that may help one of y'all :-} make the link: several weeks ago I asked the list if any of their Vans had diabetes in their line. Linda Hayes of the Cornelius C. Vanarsdall, born February 15, 1766 line, was the only one who answered with a "yes". If none of the rest of you have diabetes (a cruel, inherited disease)in your Van lines, then Levi and family MUST somehow be connected to Linda's Cornelius C. Thanks for the great idea, Terri! My father had diabetes (he passes away a few years ago due to complications) & I have inherited it. Terri, Thank you for adding your information to my list. When I first posted the question I half jokingly suggested that maybe the first Symon passed it on to everyone. Well, as more branches of the family are added to the diabetes group, it seems like the "bad gene" must have originated farther back than 1800. (This is as far back as I can currently go with my Vans.) "YES", I think this a wonderful idea. I just recently found my Husband's greatgrandfather - Shedrick Van Orsdale - had siblings! That was brickwall #1. I'd like to share this with all of you: William G. VanOrsdale married Mary Elizbeth Fisher >we are assuming all children were born Berkeley Springs, Morgan, WV 1) John Wesley Van Orsdale married Unknown ++Frank ++Henry ++Lewis ++Clarence ++Earnest 2) William M. married Unknown ++William ++Elmer ++Bradley ++Theodore ++Bessie ++Berdie ++Manda ++Goldie 3) Charles Tyson Van Orsdale married Ollie Hansen Young (I have more than what I will post here) ++Charles LeRoy ++Florence Helen ++Ollie Regina ++Andrew Richard 4)Elizabeth A. Van Orsdale married John Ambrose ++Nancy Ambrose 5) Shedrick Benjamin Van Orsdale married Roseanna Garland (I have plenty more for this!) Moved to Canton, Stark, Ohio ++Grace Elizabeth Garland (Shedrick adopted Grace) ++Mary Mae Van Orsdale married Harold Gribben (From whence we descend!) ++Ruth P. Van Orsdale ++William Calvin Beck "Bud" Van Orsdale ++Harry Cornwell Van Orsdale ++Bertha Amelia Van Orsdale ++Ida Roseanna Van Orsdale ++Lawrence Oscar Van Orsdale 6) Mary J (Janie) Van Orsdale married Tice Ambrose (First name?) *Brickwall #2: Shedrick's death certificate verifies William G. and Mary Elizabeth as parents. The informant on the Shedrick's death certificate was Edward Van Orsdale. Who is Edward Van Orsdale of Canton, Stark, Ohio in January 1943??? Thanks for bearing with me! By the way if any of the other names look familar - please let me know! Laura Gribben
John Vanasdal, born 1823, PA or possibly what is now WV Married to Deborah Jordan, or possibly had a wife before her. The 1860 Licking Co., OH census shows John and Deborah and children Cozine, Caroline, and Lucinda. It should have also shown John Isaac Vanasdal, born 1859, but he isn't listed in the household. 1870 census shows children as Corridine, Caroline, Lucinda, John Isaac, and Emily. There is much confusion regarding the mother of John Isaac, and I'm wondering, among many other things, if he could have been the son of another John Vanasdal and taken in to live with this John and Deborah for some reason. John Isaac was born in 1859 and died in an accident in 1901 in Vigo Co., IN. At that time his parents were still living and two of the daughters listed with John and Deborah. I know that Corridine had died in 1887 in Seneca Co., OH (also an accident) but have learned nothing about the daughters other than that two of them were living in 1901 (John Isaac's obit, which did not give names). I've posted this many times, but that's all the information I have ever been able to collect. John and Deborah are not listed in Vigo Co., death records, even though they were living there in the 1900 census and probably in 1901. I can't find where or when they died and until I do, I guess I won't know the parents of John Vanasdal. He was also listed in a few records as John Vanausdal. It's possible he was a son or brother of a William Vanasdal who also lived in Licking Co., OH, and most of the time near John, but I haven't learned anything about him, either, other than the fact that he was living with Hixon Blade and wife Mary (probably his daughter). I know Hixon Blade died, but don't know what happened to Mary after he died. The William Vanasdal who was living with them may be the William Vanasdal who died in the Licking Co. Infirmary in 1900. I have been in contact with the family of Corridine Vanasdal, but they know nothing more than I do and I don't know where to turn next. Records I send for don't seem to be available, and I've been to Licking Co. and found practically nothing, and Vigo Co. and learned only a little about John Isaac. From John Isaac down to myself, I know all the family because we are it, and we are a mighty small pod of people trying to learn which branch of the Vans we belong to. Benjamin Vanosdaugh (Vannosdol, Van Osdoll) and his son Philip first appear in Luzerne (now Wyoming Co.), PA) about 1810. Philip married Melissa Churchwell and they had at least three children : my grandfather William who married Olive Robi(n)son, daughter of John and Olive (Howard) Robi(n)son and moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, after the Civil War; Churchwell, who moved to Oklahoma before 1900; and Abby who married Thomas Sherwood and moved to Iowa when widowed. I cannot find where Benjamin came from. Family stories say New York. I cannot find any information on the Churchwell side either. Any information would be appreciated. Hi All, I think this roll call is a very good idea. Congrats! Thanks to Rhonda, Charlene an Bob, they have been a lot of help. I have a couple of brickwalls--maybe someone else can help? My gg-grandfather, John Vanausdoll, b.March 29,1785 in Pennsylvania (as Vanarsdalen), d.November 6,1865 in Otter Creek Twp.,Jersey Co.,Illinois(as Vanausdoll). He married Mary Pegan in 1826. She was b. June 4,1796 in Virginia, d. April 7,1872 in Otter Creek Twp,Jersey Co.,Ill. My grandfather, Caleb, was born in Butler Co,Ohio. Caleb's sister, Sarah was born approx 1832--unknown as to where, and his brother, Allen was born August 4,1839 in Monroe Co,Illinois. What I'm trying to find is info on where John was in the 41years before he got married. Was he married previously? And if so to whom? Were there any other children? I'm fairly sure he was in Bucks Co, Pa., but I'm looking for proof. It seems John moved around quite a bit. The Other brickwall--I'm searching for info on Sarah. She was living with the Pittman's in Jerseyville,Ill during 1850 census.(sp. Vanarsdall) approx 18 yrs old at that time. I don't have any other info on her.
