My John C. Vanarsdall b. abt 1800 d. 1874 in Lee Co., Iowa. He was the son of Cornelius C. and Mary (Vanderipe) Vanarsdall. John m. Mary "Polly" Westerfield May 2, 1825, Mercer Co., KY. They had the following children- Mary Jane m. William Peevler, Mercer Co., KY Catherine Ann m. William Colvin, Mercer Co., KY William m. Saramanda Utley, Mercer Co., KY Charles m. Virginia Collins, Lee Co., Iowa SMITH m. MARY ELIZABETH GRAHAM, LEE CO., IOWA, my Great Grandparents Alonzo m. Emma Hinch, Lee Co., Iowa Merritt died as a young man in Lee Co., Iowa. My grandfather is named after this young man. John C and Mary "Polly" along with all of the above children and spouses came to Iowa around 1854 or 1855. They all lived and died in Lee Co., Iowa and all are buried within 5 miles of my home. Let me ask you a few questions. Did they already have relatives there at the time? Any references to a Valencourt VanOrsdale, and if so do they mention relationship. Perhaps written in letters, corespondence, wills, family bibles, etc...? you mentioned graves near your house, are any of them marked with Louisa VanOrsdale or Louisa Muir between 1836 and 1850? Any other Van Osdale graves marked with dates in that time? If you have looked in your Lee county history, you know that Valencourt lived there from 1827 till he died. Of course, he did go to California in the 1850's for a few years.
