Dear list, Just got back from a very productive trip to Clermont County, Ohio, where Oakey Van Arsdalen settled. Oakey was born 22 December 1757, Somerset County, New Jersey, married to Mary South (who died c1804) and moved shortly thereafter to Clermont County, where he died 7 July 1849. In Clermont, the surname began being spelled as Vannosdol and Vanosdol (and a few other spellings, some of which were new to me!) Oakey is a son of Ouke van Arsdale, s/o Christoffel van Arsdale, s/o Jan Simonse van Arsdale, s/o Simon Janse van Arsdale. Anyhow, I obtained a copy of his will, and also visited his well-preserved gravesite at the Tate Township Cemetery, Bethel, Clermont County. Will gladly share the will and photoes with any interested parties. He was moved to the Bethel Cemetery sometime after his death, originally having been buried on the family farm. Next to him is his grandson Isaac and his family; also photographed those stones. Also got Bible records of his son Robert Vanosdol (1791 - 1872), and Robert's son Isaac (1832 - 1923) giving births, marriages and deaths for their families. Several of the Bible record entries disagree with dates found in the courthouse records and on gravestones. Finally, Oakey's son, also named Oakey (1786 - c1834) was married to Elizabeth Laughlin. I found the will of James Laughlin, which mentions her and "Okey" along with his other children and the husbands of his daughters, plus several grandchildren. This woulc be of interest to any of you who descend from that marriage, as it is the first real proof I've seen that Eliabeth's parents were James and Nancy/Ann Laughlin. Found several Vanosdol cemetery inscriptions and marriage records naming folks I can not connect right now, too. Hopefully the 1850, '60 and '70 census records will clarify relationships when I am able to examine them. Cordially, Bryce Stevens BStevens@netstarcomm.net
