    1. [VanArsdale-L] Caleb Vanausdol, Jasper County, Indiana
    2. Some records pertaining to Caleb Vanausdol, Jasper County, Indiana: The first record found for Caleb Vanausdol was the 1840 Federal Census, Mad River Township, Champaign County, Ohio, listing Caleb as age 40 to 50, probable wife age 30 to 40, and nine children, five boys and four girls. We believe that we can identify all but two of those listed in this census. Caleb Male 40 - 50 Elizabeth Female 30 - 40 Hamilton Male Under 5 Talitha Female Under 5 John H. Male 05 - 10 Margaret Female 05 - 10 Andrew Male 10 - 15 Nancy Female 10 - 15 Cornelius Male 15 - 20 Missing are one female, ages 5- 10, and one male, ages 15 -20. Harriet would have been married at this time to John A. Kenton. The next record we found were land records in Jasper County, Indiana, for Caleb Vanausdol: (1) W1/2, NW1/4, Section 36, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 80 acres, registered 14 December 1840 (2) SENE, Section 23, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 40 acres, registered 18 October 1843 (3) SWNW, Section 24, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 40 acres, registered 18 October 1843 All of the above were BLM/GLO patents whose certificates were issued 01 August 1844. These land records would preclude this being the Caleb Vanausdol having died in Champaign County, Ohio, in 1841as reported by some. We find a marriage record for an Elizabeth Vanausdol marrying a Silas Thrailkill in LaGrange County, Indiana, 30 June 1850. Silas Thrailkill was long time resident of Greenfield Township, LaGrange County, with the history of the county showing him as a resident in 1832. BLM/GLO records show he received land patents in 1833 for 80 acres, 1835 for 40 acres, and 1837 for 40 acres. Vanausdol of Clinton County, Iowa to John A. Kenton warrants for $250.00 the following real estate: W1/2, NW1/4, Section 36, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM. On 17 April 1867 John Vanausdol filed suit in Johnson County, Kansas, against John A. Kenton to answer the action on a promissary note for $250.00 dated Nov. 2nd 1859 and due 12 months from that date with legal interest from maturity. This land is identical to that patented by Caleb Vanausdol. As an added note on 17 April 1867 John H. Vanausdol filed suit in Johnson County, Kansas, against John A. Kenton to answer the action on a promissary note for $250.00 dated Nov. 2nd 1859 and due 12 months from that date with legal interest from maturity. The Jasper County Deed Book 16 Nov 1859 Pages 570 & 571 records that John A. Kenton sold to Wm. J. LaRue & John W. LaRue for $5,000.00: (1) SE1/4, Section 27, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 160 acres (2) SW1/4, Section 36, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 160 acres (3) W1/2, NW1/4, Section 36, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 80 acres (4) SENE, Section 23, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 40 acres (5) SW1/4, NW1/4, Section 24, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 40 acres Items 1 and 2 are John A. Kenton land and and items 3, 4, and 5 are the Vanausdol land patents. An Estate Settlement from the Jasper County, Indiana, Deed Book Pages 468 & 469 on 08 December 1859, land from Estate of John H. Vanausdol, Clinton County, IA, located in Jasper County, Indiana, described as W1/2, NW1/4, Section 36, Twp. 30N, Range 7W, 2nd PM, 80 acres was listed with the following names: Silas Thrailkill, Elizabeth Thrailkill Cornelius Vanausdol Andrew Vanausdol Sarah Vanausdol Hamilton Vanausdol David Denny, Margaret Denny Adam Miller, Janey Miller Barkley Foster, Jane Foster John A. Kenton George W. Soper, Lelitha Soper Those from the 1850 Lagrange Count census matching the estate settlement were Silas and Elizabeth Thrailkill, Cornelius Vanausdol, Andrew Vanausdol, Margaret Vanausdol (married to David Denny 23 March 1858 in Cedar County, Iowa), John H. Vanausdol (handling the settlement); Talitha Vanausdol (married to George W. Soper 15 March 1855 in Cedar County, Iowa). Those from the estate settlement not matching the census were Sarah Vanausdol, Janey [Nancy?] (married to Adam Miller), John A. Kenton (Husband of Harriet Vanausdol who was deceased at the time of the settlement), Hamilton Vanausdol (listed as living with John A. Kenton in the 1850 Jasper County census),and, Jane Vanausdol (married to Barkley Foster). Neither Caleb Vanausdol from the LaGrange County census nor Sarah Vanausdol from the estate settlement have been found in other records. The 1867 suit filed by John H. Vanausdol against John A. Kenton in Kansas indicates indicates that John H. Vanausdol was the administrator of the Estate being handled and that it was not the Estate of John. This with other information indicate that several of the Vanausdol children had moved to Iowa prior to 1855. >From the 1870 census for Cedar County, Iowa, we known that Cornelius Vanausdol was living with George Soper and his wife Talitha Vanausdol, his sister. As for what happened to Caleb and when he died we have no idea. It is possible he died in Champaign County, Ohio. Based on the dates of the land purchases in Jasper County he was alive in 1843. No will or estate settlement has been found at this time though from the estate settlement he may have died intestate with John H. Vanausdol being named administrator. It is logical to conclude that John A. Kenton took over operation of the farming after the death of Caleb between 1844 and 1850 and would handle the land transaction since he was the only one living in Jasper County at the time of the settlement. The reason for the estate settlement may have been that John Kenton was selling his own land at the time for his move to Johnson County, Kansas, in 1860.
