    3. Ginny: So far as I can tell, all Van Arsdalens in the county are related if we could trace everyone back far enough. Certainly, all the early New Yorkers were more closely related. The majority of Van Arsdalens settled in Middlesex and Somerset Cos., New Jersey, and in Bucks and York (now Adams) Cos., Pennsylvania. However, there were some pioneers who ventured out in different directions, and we are just now learning about some of these. Many of the early Virginia settlers in the family came from Pennsylvania settlements. A lot has been written about this. However, not much has been written about New Jersey settler migrations. From Pennsylvania, there were two known routes of travel. Flatboaters down the Ohio River was the first, and the second route was overland through Maryland and down between the mountains separating Virginia and West Virginia. New Jersey settlers would have likely taken the overland route, but could have taken either. By 1820, Van Arsdalens had settled in many states including the Virginia's and Kentucky [earlier], Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. I have not made any studies on southern migrations. I do know that some family ended up early in Mississippi, probably by the river routes. I have not really made a detailed study of migration paterns.
