First, thanks to all who have recently worked with me on the Simonson-Van Arsdale connections. It appears that several descendants of Jan Simonsz van Aersdalen (1676-1756) and wife Lammetje PROBASCO may have "adopted" the surname Simonson over the course of two generations in early New Jersey. This email will detail some of my findings and the results of some cooperative efforts. I am presenting these items to solicit further input as I am running out of available source data locally and must rely on info from helpful people scattered across the U.S. with access to other data. FIRST Jan Simonsz's namesake son Jan (born ca. 1705) married a "Lena", thought to be Magdalena Gerretse Dorland (bp. 12/11/1714 at Jamaica; NYGBR vol. 105, p. 204). No true proof of Lena's parentage has been identified, to my knowledge. "Jan van Aersdalen and Leena" baptized 2 children at Jamaica (Jan, 12/26/1731 and Lammetje, 5/13/1733). No further published trace of this Jan VAN AERSDALEN and Lena are found. However, on 12/16/1746 at the Harlingen RDC, a son "Corneles" is baptized to "Ian Symmesen and Lena" (GMNJ, vol. 17, no. 4, p. 85). Could this be Jan Simonsz's son and daughter-in-law? Also appearing at that church that same day were SIMON VAN AERSDALEN (Jan Simonsz's nephew, or Jan's cousin); CORNELUS VAN AERSDALEN (Simon's son); and MAREYTE (VAN AERSDALEN) wife of JOOST/GEORGE CASOU/CASSHOW, all bapsizing children. Additionally, to confuse the issue, PETER (DE)REMER and wife WYNTJE also baptized a daughter that day; WYNTJE is of the BARENT & APPOLONIA SIMONSON line out of Staten Island. Or perhaps, this was the "Johannis Simonse" who, on 9/2/1751 as a widower from Staten Island, married Libertje NEWBERRIE, widow of Flatbush (Long Island), as recorded in Frost's "Marriages from the Records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of the Town of Flatbush, Kings Co., NY, vol. 1". SECOND, GARRET VAN AERSDALEN and wife ARIAENTJE baptized 3 children at Six Mile Run RDC between 1757 and 1763. Then from 1771 through 1776, GARRET SIMONSE and wife ARIAENTJE baptized 3 children at the Readington RDC. There is no record of a "Simon" born to this couple (or either couple, if they are not the same), although there is a sizeable time gap. One of the children baptized at Six Mile Run was named Christoffel (Christopher), bapt. 8/16/1761. There is a Revolutionary War pension application for a Christopher SIMONSON who stated that he was born in 1760 at Cranbury, NJ. Cranbury was very close to Six Mile Run, and their church records sometimes overlapped. This is the best evidence I have found so far linking the Simonsons and Van Aersdalens. LASTLY, there are numerous repetitions of the name LAMMETJE in the Simonson line, perhaps in honor of Jan Simonsz van Aersdalen's wife. Some of the Simonson children have been named "Simon Van Arsdale", which could be in honor of the Dutch pastor of the same name or the ancestor of all the Van Arsdales in this country. Any further thoughts or comments are greatly welcomed! Charles R. Vanorsdale
