Today I received my copy of "The Van Voorhees Family in America", compiled and edited by Florence Christoph and published by The Van Voorhees Association (Gateway Press, Baltimore, MD, 2000). A quick check of the index revealed the following: p. 272: Jacob A. VOORHEES, s/o Abraham Voorhees & Maria Van Voorhees, married Lammetje SIMONSON, d/o John SIMONSON and Magdalena (--?--); Lammetje born 27 Oct 1759. p. 273. Ida VOORHEES, sister of Jacob A., married Abraham SIMONSON, parents not listed; Abraham born 12 Feb 1750. WELL as it turns out these 2 couples baptized most if not all of their children at Six Mile Run RDC, Somerset County. Checking the earlier baptismal records, Lammetje was baptized at Six Mile Run 25 Nov 1759 (SCHQ, vol. 8, #3, p. 213)and Abraham was baptized 18 Mar 1750 (SCHQ, vol. 8, no. 2, p. 125), about 1 month after their birth, as was the typical custom. HOWEVER both Lammetje and Abraham were recorded as children of Jan and Lena VAN ARSDALEN! Now, is this the same Jan and Lena who bp. Jan and Lammetje at Jamaica, Long Island in 1731 and 1733, respectively? And a son Cornelius at Harlingen RDC, Somerset Co., NJ on 16 Dec 1746 with the parents recorded as "Ian Symmesen and Lena"? If so, Jan and Lena had children over a 28 year period (1731-1759) which tests my credulity! Speculation exists that Lena was Magdalena Gerretse Dorland, bapt. 11 Dec 1714 at Jamaica, LI. If so, she would have been but 16 or 17 when son Jan was baptized at Jamaica. On the other hand, she would have been about 44 or 45 when (the second?) Lammetje was born. Did Jan (the elder) marry a second Lena? We'll have to work on that, but for now, it looks as if the Simonson-Van Arsdale connection has been supported. Charles R. Vanorsdale
