John Van Arsdale and wife Eleanor Peterson, lived in Berwick Twp, York Co PA. John died and left a will (actually there are evidently two of them filed) one under the name of James and the other John. Made 9 April 1771, proved 22 June 1772. recorded in York Co Will Book C pg 105. His wife is Nelltje, CH: David, Isaac, Jeanette, Marntie, Johanna. Ex: were Eleanor, Henry Banta and "my cousin Cornelious". It was witnessed by Peter Peterson and George Burnette. Eleanor Finnosdol is listed as a widow as is Hannah Finnosdol (don't know who she is either) on the tax lists of 1772 for Berwick Twp. In 1781 Abraham is shown as Abraham Vanarsdal and "? to land", then in 1784 he is listed as Abraham Van Arsdale and under his name also "Orphans Land". So evidently he was administering this for John's family. Eleanor or Nelltje then married Simon Van Arsdale and had three children, the last of whom she baptised alone at Conowago in 1783. Simon died by 1783 and Letters of Admnistration were granted to Eleanor Vanarsdale, widow of Simon, late of Berwick Oct 21, 1783. Letters of Administration were also granted to Abraham on that same date for Simon Vanarsdall, late of York Co. Vol F, pp 172 &172 York Co PA Wills. Abraham continues alone on the Tax lists for 1784, then with David who is listed also as a Single Man; 1787 Abraham, John and David as a single man; in 1788 there is no Abraham, however John (the son) is shown as having 198 acres (so he came of age to inherit his fathers land evidently even though David is the oldest son per the will). John is listed as a Single man, Eleanor a widow listed as "poor", David still single and a black smith and Mary (daughter) "poor and one cow". So I assume that at this point Abraham had done his duty and moved most likely to Kentucky. 1. Who was Abraham and what was his relationship to this family? 2. Is anyone descended from the family of John and Eleanor who can tell me who their living children listed in the will above married and lived? 3. I am especially interested in Mary or Marntie listed as "poor" because I suspect she might be the missing Martha who married Lambert Darland about 1788 -90 when he returned from Mercer Co Ky and is found on the York Co tax lists living with his Uncle Garret as a single man or widower. It is possible tha
