    1. [VanArsdale-L] Rev. Aeneas or William VanArsdale
    2. Karol Stanley
    3. Hi, Van researchers: Is anyone searching for a Rev. Aeneas or William VanArsdale? I found the following in the Rev. War pension application of my g-g-g-g-grandfather, Joseph Doty: Applied for pension August 17, 1830. Writing in support of awarding Joseph Doty a pension were his fellow Light Horse Troop members, * John Crane, Recompence Stanbery, Benjamin Bedell, Jacob Potter, Jacob Lacy and cousin James Doty, all of whom wrote supporting statements before John Littell. The statements said he was on duty at Springfield when General Washington was there and was at the ... (?) of the Reverend William VanArsdale, the clergyman. The troops paraded in front of Mr. VanArsdales home in the summer of 1780 when Springfield was burnt by the enemy. * George Townley (The Mr. Arsdale was Aeneas VanArsdale) Documentary Reference: Record Division, Ser.File 992, Rev. War, Bureau of Pensions, Washington, DC. Service verified by original pension application on file in Pension Bureau. It is a little misleading, as one doesn't know whether the Rev. Mr. VanArsdale was Aeneas or William, but I copied it exactly as I found it at the Library of Congress, September 1988. Hope it helps someone. Sasha Stanley

He married (1) Mary Vanderipe and (2) Cynthia Vandivier. Both marriages occurred in Mercer Co., KY. I have no info concerning Mary. Cornelius and Cynthia are buired in the "Old Mud Meeting House" cemetery just outside of Harrodsburg, KY. A baptism cannot be found for Cornelius C. Vanarsdall. 3. Tunis and Jane (Weir) Van Arsdale's lineage is described in James Riker's "Evacuation Day 1783", which concerns his father-in-law (I believe) John Van Arsdale, Tunis' younger brother. These men are descended from Jan Simonsz van Aersdalen. I "think" the Dutchess and Orange County Vans are separate lines. The 1800 Census for Dutchess County shows a "Dirck Van Asdale" who is over 45, i.e. born before 1755. At home are 1 boy born between 1790-1800 and 2 boys born between 1774-1784, one of which is very likely your Derrick. This "Dirck" must be the same as the one who appears on the 1790 Census listing him as living in Fishkill Town, Dutchess County. The 1790 Census was in the last issue of The Vanguard; the 1800 Census will be in the next. The general location, the approximate age, and the name "Dirck" suggest to me that "Dirck" is one of the lost sons of Dirck Cornelisz van Aersdalen (c.1694-after 1752). The elder Dirck and his second wife Gysbertje de Grauw baptized a son Gerrit in Albany in 1752, having moved to/near Albany from the New Brunswick, NJ area. The elder Dirck was a son of Cornelis Simonsz van Aersdalen, Jan Simonsz' brother. I don't have primary record proof but maybe you can work from this. Good luck. Charles R. 2. Thank you for the info on Tunis&Jane. I do have that date and some other information on their family from other researchers. My problem is trying to connect my Derrick VanNosdall 1777-1853(bur.Middlebush Cemetery,DutchessCoNY) who married Elizabeth Rynders in 1799 to Tunis and Jane. Derrick also has a brother Aaron1788-1854 who married Elizabeth Appleby and is buried in the same cemetery. The historian in Montgomery, Orange Co. NY thinks Derrick and Aaron and possibly a son James, are Tunis and Jane's children who left Orange Co. and settled in Dutchess Co. I can find no wills or church records to substantiate the relationship. All of Tunis's other children have baptism records at the GoodWill Presby Church in Orange Co. The earliest record pertaining to Derrick in Dutchess Co. NY is the 1821 Grantor Index #20 p2401 that lists Derick & Eliz. VanNosdall. Deed from Joseph I Vail, Verplank Rd. Town of Fishkill. 3. I'm still trying every avenue to find the parents of my great great grandfather, JOHN Vanasdal, who was born in 1823 in PA, or maybe WVA. My newest possible clue got messed up by S.S. so I'm going to ask for some help. I sent for the S.S. application of John Vanasdal's grandson, SAMUEL JESTUS Vanasdal and I had hoped that maybe the application would show the full given name of his father, CORRIDINE, or C.C. Vanasdal, would be given and hoped the full name would give a clue if patronomic naming was used. Well, something happened, either in the copying of the application and there is a dark line right down the middle of Corridine's middle name. It appears to be a five letter name, beginning with C and ending with ERY. Can anybody find, or think of, any of the Van given names that could fit that description? In other words, can anybody fill in C-ERY to go with any known names in their family histories? I also don't know where the Jestus in Samuel's name comes from, and I suppose it may be a hint, but I've never seen that name posted, nor do I have it in any of my data. It may be from his mother's side of the family and I know very little about her side. I've run into brick walls every where I turn on John, and I'm desperate. I sent for death certificates for two William Vanasdals who died in Licking County, OHone of them in 1900, the other in 1905, and they don't have either one. I was hoping to find a brother or maybe even his father. I may have to change my maiden name soon, before I lose my mind trying to find my Van roots. Barb, in MS barbJ@prodigy.net
