    3. Greetings Phyllis, Your Laura L VANARSDALL caught my attention. I suggest you consider Mercer County, KY for records of her parents, Mary J. PENNY and John TERHUNE. There you will find several VanArsdall, Penny and Terhune families intermarrying. While I can't document a marriage between Mary & John, above. We do have a marriage between William Marcus Terhune and a Mary James Penny. Wlliam, a minister, was the s/o Ruliff Terhune and Mary "Polly" Vermillion. He was born in 1833, and died tragically in 1872. I believe his widow subsequently married another Terhune but I don't know his given name. Hope this will be of *some* help. Good luck and Merry Christmas, Barb Terhune VanArsdale-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Part 1.3Type: Microsoft MHTML Document 4.0 (message/rfc822) >

    3. Hi - I'm still on here! I'm trying to get all my messages cleared so I can unsubscribe, but that isn't happening. My g-g-grandfather - yes, is Charles, who married Mariah Vanderwater. My g-grandfather was William. I know very little about the Iowa families - I was from Indiana and my mother was from Iowa, and she died long ago, so I learned very little from her side of the family. Most of what I have learned I have found out by myself - and those people in the photo album with no names have remained a mystery to me for about 35 years. I, too, am anxious to sort the family out. I have found that several of the ancestors lived in Paris and were quite influential. Do you have cemetery records for Charles and Mariah? I assume they stayed in Dutchess Co., with the children being the more adventurous. I will be sure to contact you as soon as we're back. Thanks - I'm very excited, too. I've been on the New York GenConnect and found several leads. Sasha

    1. Re: [VanArsdale-L] John R. VanNosdall
    2. Sasha, Thank you for your reply. This is so exciting. Can't wait for you to return from vacation as I would love to exchange information. Eliza is buried here in Dutchess Co. with her husband John R. and her brother William 1797-1885 and sister in law Ada MacFarlane Serrine. The spelling on Eliza's death certificate and on the tombstone is Serrine but I've seen it many other ways. Almost as many as the Van's. Is your Charles the one I have listed on the IGI who married Mariah Vanderwater in 1882? We have a mutual cousin in Mason City, Iowa who is the GGranddaughter of Morgianna Vannosdol, twin daughter of John R. Morgianna married lst.Sherman Smith and had a son Walter Smith who is our cousin's grandfather. Will give you her name and address on you private e-mail when you return from your vacation. I am planning to get a picture program and a scanner and hope to be able to send photos. Have one that I believe to be John and Eliza in the 1860's and one of Eliza, taken in Illinois in the late 1880's when she went there to visit one of her daughters. I have the birth and death dates from the death certificate. I live in Dutchess Co. so I have access to a lot of info. or at least what info is still intact. According to his will John R.'s daughter Ruth b.1845 who married George E. Purdy in 1864 was living in Green River Ill. Helen who married William Brinkerhoff was living in Davenport Ia. and another sister Florentina (Morgiana's) twin sister also went west. Florentina married lst a Wiltse, and had a child Addie, then married a Morton Hoffman and went west. Have no other information. Sure hope , with your help and the VAN-list we can find some other "living" relatives who might be able to answer our questions. My biggest puzzle is trying to discover who John R.'s grandfather was. His father Derrick is buried in Middlebush Cemetery but there are questions as to whether his father was Tunis Van Arsdale (brother of "Flagpole John") or perhaps Dirk VanArsdale and Maritye Vermilyea who lived in Dutchess Co. in 1790. I can go on forever but will close for now. Looking foreward to sharing information. Have a great vacation. Happy holidays. Cousin, Kay VanNosdall Mackey By the way my husband's gggrandfather Thomas Mackey came here in 1839 from Kilkenney Ireland and settled in the Town of Beekman, Dut. Co. NY. He worked in an Iron mine at Sylvan Lake for a Daniel David Delaney and is buried in the St. Denis Cemetery , Town of Beekman, Dut. Co. NY. Lots of other Mackey's in the Hudson Valley. Many are in Ulster Co. and were Protestant. Thanks again.

    3. Hi, cousin Kay - your Eliza and my Charles were brother and sister. Charles was my great-great grandfather. I have a birth date and death date for Eliza Jane, if you do not have them. We here in the midwest document our connection to the Serine/Sirrine family of Dutchess County, NY, in an unpublished manuscript written in the 1940s which is now in the possession of a lady in Michigan, although I have a copy of it, as do many of the Serine descendants here in the Midwest. Even though we had facts, a researcher in New York who had written a book (the same one?) refused to believe that we were of any relation, since the person "didn't have anything on us." But we are here, and we are of that family. I would love to exchange data with you, Kay. I am also in touch with a VanNosdall who is trying to connect his VanNosdalls in Michigan (and Illinois) with the Sirrines. My family spelled the name Serine - they went to Iowa from Dutchess County NY, also, and stayed there. I am also a VanAusdal/VanOsdel/VanArsdall descendant, as is my husband, and I am a Mackey descendant. I am unfortunately leaving for vacation, but please keep me on your list and when I get back, I would dearly love to compare notes. My mother lived with her grandmother Serine when she was growing up in Iowa. I have many Serine/Sirrine pictures that I inherited, but many of the people in the pictures are not named. My g-g-aunt Annie Laurie spoke only French, and lived near my grandmother. The kids all thought she was crazy because she didn't speak English. Sasha Stanley

    3. Can anyone connect up my gggggrandfather Benjamin Vanosdaugh/Vannosdoll/Van Osdoll to their branch? I found Benjamin first in the 1810 census of what is now Braintrim Township of Wyoming County (then Luzerne) as being 26-45 years old with a wife 16-25 and one male child and one female child, both under 10. By 1830 he is listed as 40-50 and his wife (I have not found her name) also 40-50. At that time they have 2 males under 5 and one 5-10 as well as one female 5-10 and one 15-20. My ggggrandfather Philip is living in the next residence 20-30 years old with a wife 15-20 (her name was Melissa Churchwell) and two sons under 5. One of those sons was my gggrandfather William who moved his family, including my great grandfather Frank, to Webster County, Iowa, in 1868 after serving in the Civil War. If anyone can connect up this branch to Simon, I would be very appreciative. 2. Sasha, I am the GGGrandaughter of John R. and Eliza Jane Sirrine VanNosdall. In 1850 they were living in New Hamburg, Dutchess Co. NY but in 1870 were in Colona, Henry Co. Illinois with their son Samuel, his wife Caroline and an infant John. Samuel, and his wife had three other children Elizabeth, George and Lilly. All came back to NYS (except the infant John, who must have died in Illinois). John R. died in 1884 in Chelsea,Dut.Co. NY and his wife died 20Dec1890 in New Hamburg, Dut. Co. NY. Before she died (between 1884 and 1890) she returned to Illinois to visit (I believe her daughter or daughters). Records show that her daughter Morgiana married a Sherman Smith in 1856 and had children. She also had a daughter Helen who married a William Brinkerhoff and lived in Tompkins Co. NY but went to live in Davenport Iowa with a daughter and died at the daughter's home. There was also a daughter of Eliza named Ruth who married a George E. Purdy and moved to Green River Illinois. I have a photo of Eliza taken when she visited Illinois.. I have been in touch with a researcher who has written books on the Sirrine,Serrine family and thinks Eliza's father was James Serrine and mother was Elizabeth (possibly Minthorn). Hope this is of interest. Kay Mackey
