Sanders was in the store of James Bodge, in Pawnee, on the evening of March 7, 1865, when two men entered it, ostensibly with the view of trading, but really with the view of robbery. Mr. Sanders passed out of the door, and as he did so, was shot by an accomplice of the robbers, stationed on the outside, to prevent his giving the alarm. He died before any of his friends could reach him. Two of the robbers, James P. Lemon and Barney B. Vanarsdale, were arrested, the former in Missouri and the latter in Iowa. They were tried, convicted April 25, and hung at Springfield, July 20, 1866, The other, (???) Ballard, was hung in Missouri by a mob, but confessed that he assisted in the murder of Mr. Sanders."

Congratulation and best wishes to the three of you, Mark, Aviva, and Jacob. You have all commenced an awesome and joyful journey and an experience like no other. May all the best in life come to little Jacob. I am very happy for all of you..........there's nothing like a new baby! Hope all is continuing to go well for parents and baby!!!!!! My advice: relax, kick back, and love, love, love. Mother Nature was smart enough to engineer the human with common sense in learning how to care for their babies......so you will soon learn that you're both more capable than you might have initially feared. Parenthood is probably the most responsible task in life and the most rewarding. (I am an R.N. who worked O.B. for approx. 8 years......and have yet to see a newborn that was not absolutely beautiful and with their own inique/individual personalities from day one!) So I know your son is gorgeous and bonding is well underway. Best regards to you all! A Van cousin, Lucy S. tiger@kopower.com

Hi all -- I'm working on a line of Vanorsdal(e)'s, said to be descended from Garret VanArsdalen (b. 1725 in NJ; d. 1787 in York Co., PA) & Marya <surname unknown>. Three of Garret's sons -- Cornelius, b. ca. 1759; Garret, b. ca. 1760; and Abraham, b. 1765, emigrated to the area near Shepherdstown, WV, and the descendants of Abraham & Garrett, at least, were scattered throughout Berkeley, Hampshire, & Morgan Co.'s, WV (then VA), in the early 1800's. I have a pretty good account of Abraham's descendants, partially from Charles Van Orsdale, but still haven't been able to definitively link my ancestor Mary Elizabeth (aka Elizabeth Mary) Van Orsdale (b. 1803 in Morgan Co., m. John VanKirk Fisher before 1832) to Garrett, although the birthdates in the 1820 census seem to fit. Part of the problem is that Cornelius seems to have disappeared, and it is possible that Mary Elizabeth was his daughter. Thought I would post some information I just got from a local history of the area -- "Historical Records of Old Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia", by Wilmer L. Kerns: "Garret Vanarsdall, was born in New Jersey on March 19, 1757. He moved to Berkeley County, where he joined the Revoluntionary Army, after which he moved to Hampshire County, Va. His wife was named Amelia, based on an 1828 deed in Morgan County, Va. Possibly, she was a second wife. When Garret Vanarsdale [here they spelled it differently] made his application for a military pension in 1834, he stated that his brother took his discharge papers down the Ohio many years ago, and he was not heard from since. It is believed that the brother's name was Cornelius." This was on page 361. On page 363: "Cornelius, son of Garrett and Sarah Vanorsdall, died on Aug. 5, 1876 of "paralysis" at age 76 years in Hampshire County, Va. His death was reported to the Hampshire County Courthouse by Daughter Elizabeth Heiskell. The wife of Cornelius was named Catherine Huff, a daughter of William Cornelius and Elizabeth (Heironimus) Huff. The Vanorsdales were divorced on Sept. 4, 1866 in Hampshire County, W.Va. Catherine died in Hampshire County, WV on Aug. 8, 1874, at age 87 yeras, according to her son-in-law, Francis W. Heiskell, who reported her death to the Hampshire County courthouse. I found her grave near the Cacapon River, on a knoll close to the end of County Road 29/2. It is on the old Francis W. Heiskell place, now owned by Edward Milburn, not far from the Morgan COunty, W.Va. line. Catherine, wife of Cornelius Van Arsdale, died Aug. 8, 1875, aged 89 years, 3 months, 13 days. Next to her was Cornelius Van Arsdale, died Aug. 5, 1876, aged 49 years and 15 days. Was he a son? If so, why is his birth date the same as his father's? On the preceding page, page 362, it says: Abraham Vanorsdall was born in Somerset County, New Jersey on Oct.27, 1765, and died in 1824 in Morgan County, Va. In 1794, he immigrated to Hampshire County, Va., where he settled at Great Cacapon. This section of Hampshire County fell into Morgan County when it was formed in 1820. He married Abigail Johnston, daughter of William and Elizabeth Johnston, circa 1799. Her will was filed in 1849 and probated in 1850, in Morgan County, Va. Their children were: (1) The Rev. William Vanorsdall was born in 1800, and married Christina "Teena" Casler, daughter of John and Elizabeth Casler, on Feb., 9, 1820; (2) Garret Vanarsdall was born on June 29, 1801, and died on Aug. 14, 1876 in Fayette County, Ohio. He married Rosannah Gray, daughter of Michael Gray, of Morgan County; (3) Lemuel Vanorsdall was born on March 14, 1803 and died on May 30, 1875. He married Sarah Boyles, daughter of Henry and Mary Boyles. Lemuel represented Morgan County in the State Legislature. (4) Isaac Vanorsdall was born on Dec. 15, 1808 and died on Oct. 20, 1885 in Morgan County, W.Va. He married Frances Michael. (5) Anna M. (sometimes called Nancy) Vanorsdall was born Nov. 7, 1814 and died on Oct. 18, 1870. She married Mathias Ambrose and they had no children. (6) Abigail Vanarsdall was born on Jan. 15, 1817, and died on Sept. 28, 1893 in Madison County, Ohio. Her husband was named James Reed (1815 - 1899). They wer e buried in the Kirkwood Cemetery near London, Ohio, and (7) Mariah Vanorsdall was born in 1820. She married Patrick Phillips on Oct. 18, 1843 and they had no children. Note: It is believed that Abraham Vanorsdall was son of Garret Van Arsdalen of New Jersey, a Justice of the Peace during the American Revolution. Source: Research compiled by Mr. Roy B. Fultz of Jeffersonville, Ohio and shared with me by Frederick T. Newbraugh of Berkeley Springs, W.Va." I would love to hear from others researching this area! Sandy Dunavan
Congratulations to Aviva and yourself on the birth of Jacob. I too, am glad you finished entering the first part of your work on the internet. I also am enjoying the wonderful response to my question, "where are all the vans". Am learning a lot about our VAN family. Initially I thought I was from the Jan Symonese branch but recent information looks like I may be from the Cornelius Sijmonsz and Marretje Dirkse Ammerman via Dirck Cornelius and Catlyntje Vanderbilt. Good luck to your family. Kay (VanNosdall) Mackey
Congratulations, Mark!! It's a good thing you got those 196 pages done before the birth of Jake. I don't think you'll be having as much time for such things for a while. Mark Alan Thomas and Aviva Beth Malek are proud to announce the birth of their son Jacob Woodson Thomas on 29 December 1999 at 4:19 P. M. at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles, California. He was delivered c-section by Dr. Hersh after 22 hours of labor, the last four of which were very difficult. Jake weighed 8 pounds-12 ounces and measured in at 21 inches, with brown hair and blue eyes. Our son came home to live with us on 01 January 2000, and God has truely blessed us on this new year. He keeps us very busy, and despite all our concerns, his peditrition tells us he is perfectly healthy. Jake is the newest in the line of Abraham Van Aersdalen (1708-1753) and Maria Van Nuys (1717-1809) of Somerset County, New Jersey. Apparently we made it through all the Y2K hype without a hitch, and after the move to the new street address, we even managed to keep our same e-mail address. In the last month my Thomas lines have broken wide open, allowing new areas of research in Virginia and North Carolina in the 1700's and early 1800's. Connections are being made to the Woodson and Allen families of Virginia. Preliminary research indicates that the father of Woodson A. Thomas (1808-1862) of Greene County, Missouri was Allen Thomas of Stokes County, North Carolina and Williamson County, Tennessee, b. abt. 1766 VA, and his grandfather was probably Joseph Thomas of Virginia and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, b. abt. 1722 VA who married to Sarah Allen. Joseph Thomas may have had a brother named William Thomas of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, b. abt. 1720 VA who married to Mary Woodson. From Virginia, the family spread to North Carolina and then Tennessee, moving on to Missouri and Georgia. Mark Alan Thomas Los Angeles, California

Hi: I am new to the list and have been watching only a few days. My VanArsdale lady is a collateral line and am just beginning to look at it. She is named Maude Polly VanArsdale b 8 Sep l887 in Gratiot County MI to a William VanArsdale and his wife, name unknown. The family moved to Clare County MI about l897. In l908 she married Francis Henry Kirby. They had two daughters, Crystal and Blanche, and a son who died at birth. Maude passed away on2l Dec l934. Do these names fit into anyone's family? I would like to hear from you if they do. Thanks in advance. Elizabeth Milne granijeanm30@gtlakes.com
My ggg-grandmother was Harriet VANARSDOL (many spellings). She was born cir 1820/21 in VA/WV. She married John A. KENTON cir 1840 in Champaign Co., OH. Harriet and John moved to Jasper Co., IN, where all of their children were born. Their children were: Elizabeth (my line), b-1841, Minerva b-cir 1844, Caleb/Harvey b-cir 1847, and Franklin b-cir 1849. This family was still in Jasper Co., IN in the 1850 Census, but Harriet must have died cir 1859, because the next time I find this family, it's in Johnson Co., KS in the 1860 census, and there's no wife or mother.... Harriet is missing. John A. KENTON then remarries a Martha PARDEE (or PARDUE, etc.) cir 1862 and they have a large family together in Olathe, Johnson, KS. Some of their children's names were: Lewis, George, Simon, Ward, Marietta, Jasper. I've been able to locate some info on this family, but not anything on John's first wife, Harriet. I would be eternally grateful if someone on this "VAN" list could help me find something about my Harriet Vanarsdols' family. I think she had a brother named Hamilton, and "maybe" her father's name was Cornelius or Caleb. Also "maybe" her mother's name was Elizabeth McCOY. Is there anyone out there that can relate to these people and steer me in the right direction.....PLEASE??? Thank you for ANY help. Ginny Stroud Mikes1@Cybertrails.com
In an attempt to make the 196 pages posted last night a bit easier to "work with", I have installed a search engine at <http://www.macatawa.org/~brianter/MAThomasIndex.html#VanArsdale Search Engine> ... Please be aware that the engine will search all pages on the "Mac Net" and as we live in a Dutch community you may find material not of interest to you (then again, you could find a long-lost line).... We have about 30 Genealogy pages (because the VAN name is not our only pursuit <grin> and the others get some time, too). There are other VAN additions to the pages ... not just Mark Alan's work. Happy Hunting! Terri Rene
Happy New Millenium Kay, I was wondering the same thing ... I have Caleb VANAUSDOLL m Martha HEWITT of Jersey Co IL Charlene email: mihnbu@aol.com
Vans, Two groups of VAN descendants came to Shelby Co, IN. The VANOSDALs came from NY and the VANARSDALLs from KY. Are these "regional" spellings typical, or is it completely arbitrary? In my husband's family, there were three active spellings among the first cousins when he was a child. Phyllis Miller Fleming Shelbyville, IN
I am trying to find information on my grandmothers fathers family. Her name was Gladys Yvonne Van Arsdale, b 09/21/1895 in Cleveland, KS, her father was Cortlandt Van Arsdale b. 01/21/1842 in Pikesville, NY d. 12/12/1920, his father was Aaron Hatfield Van Arsdale b. 01/15/1812 in NY or NJ, I'm not for sure on that, d. 01/18/1848, his fathers name was Price Van Arsdale and I have no other information on him. Anyone have any information on this family please let me know. Erma edunnegan@aol.com
Located at: <http://www.macatawa.org/~brianter/MAThomas.htm> is a series of letters ... Titled: Van Arsdalen Research of Mark Alan Thomas This Van Arsdale WebPage was created on Saturday, January 15, 2000. The content is a series of letters (196 pages) written by Mark Alan Thomas about his Van Arsdalen research. The letters contain his research data and detail the lives of several Van Arsdale (many spellings exist) families. His data includes: The Family of Abraham Van Aersdalen - in 6 parts. The Family of Cornelius O. Vanarsdall - introduction in part 1, and 2 parts. The Family of Cornelius C. Vanarsdall - in one part. The data contained may be copied and shared by individuals who are involved in their own genealogical research. It should be credited to Mark Alan Thomas, and his original sources should be cited. It is very slow loading --- but I had to decide between having a "nice page" sometime next summer or a complete "rough looking" document NOW. I opted for now. Hope the data is useful --- it certainly is wonderfully written and has some wonderful anecdotes. Terri Rene DaVar-Howard P.S. There are 82 addresses subscribed to this Mailing List
Here is more information from the internet - I'm just cutting & pasting, these are NOT my family: SOURCE: Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey under the editorial supervision of Francis Bazley Lee (1907) Page 553 STACY T. VANDARSDALE, one of the successful agriculturists of Hamilton township, Mercer county, was born at Wallingford, Monmouth county, New Jersey, son of John and Rhoda Vanarsdale. The paternal grandparents were Garrett and Annie (Taylor) Vanarsdale, who were the parents of six children. John and Rhoda Vanarsdale were the parents of the following children: 1. Emily, married Nathan Martin, and had four children. 2. Elizabeth, married Alfred Jones, and they were the parents of Sidney W. Jones. 3. Caroline, married Benjamin Callender, whose two children are: Elizabeth, married Robert Stelle; and Hannah. 4. Louise, married George Dennis, and they have Page 554 children: Garrett, Mary, George, Annie, Joseph, Alfred and Charles. 5. Stacy T., see forward. 6. Alfred, married Mary Gibson. 7. Garrett, died in 1866. 8. A child who died in childhood. Stacy T. Vanarsdale attended the private and free schools after which he was "bound out" at three dollars a month for the first year, and the second year on the farm he received four and a half dollars a month. From the time he was thirteen years until he was thirty-three years of age, he taught school. These schools were taught as follows: At Cream Ridge, seven years; at Arnetown, eight years; at Ellisdale, two years; at Exton Mills, two years; at Pleasant Ridge, one year. In 1894 he purchased his present place, which he uses for general farming and truck garden purposes and also pays much attention to fruits. Politically Mr. Vanarsdale is a stanch Republican and had the honor of casting his first vote for President Abraham Lincoln, in 1860. He held the office of justice of the peace at Upper Freehold for nine years; was a member of the court of appeals for eleven years; and served on the election board for four years. He is one of the trustees of the Grange. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1873, and has been a steward and trustee of this church many years. Mr. Vanarsdale was married to Elizabeth McDaniel, by whom there is no issue. Hope this is helpful to someone, Terri Rene DaVar-Howard
