My Brick Wall-Cornelius C. Vanarsdall b. February 15, 1766 in New Jersey, d. October 14, 1866, Mercer Co., KY. He married (1) Mary Vanderipe, (2) Cynthia Vandivier. Cornelius and Mary Vanderipe had one sibling that I know about-John C. OK, brick wall #1 Simon Van Arsdale Facts- Daughter named Anna Maria Van Orsdale, b abt 1805-7, married Moses Stillwell from Gt Edwards Ill(Warsaw) Son named Valencourt Van Orsdale, b 8-25-1817, at French Village, St Claire, Ill. Wife was Catherine Claypool, b Dec 31, 1784, died 1821 Simon was a frontier trader issued a trade license in 1817 by the Governer of Missouri territory to deal with the Indians In 1824, Moses Stillwell and Maria took Valencourt to St Louis and then up to Keokuk Iowa in 1827, where Moses ran a frontier trading post Relevant rumurs and data(many references come from Rev Charles G Van Ausdall paper published 1983) Very possibly the trouble maker in Missouri in 1807-1810, unless there were two Simon's in Missouri around this time Probably was the Simon Vanorsdale that serve in war of 1812 from St Clair County, Ill Probably the head of household in the 1818 and 1820 Illinois census of St Clair County Possibly brother or son of Richard and Cornelious listed in the same survey Possibly has a son named Amos(referred to in the story of Valencourt moving to Iowa) Possibly had a son named Benjamin that served in Black Hawk Indian War. Story in our family is that Simon died in 1824, but he might have married Sophie Savage on June 2, 1824 and sent Valencourt to live with sister. Several Van Arsdales moved to the Lee County Iowa some years after Valencourt, I suspect these are all near relatives, cousins and brothers of Simon. Brick Wall #2(well, maybe just a small, irrevalent fence) Valencourt got married to Louisa Muir in 1833. Louisa Muir was the daughter of an army doctor(Dr Muir) and a Keokuk Indian. I find no clue on Dr. Muir, who went to Edinburgh University. Up to recently, I found nothing else on this marriage until I got a copy of Rev Charles G Van Ausdall paper. According to the 1836 census, Valencourt has a wife and two children, but in the 1850 census they are no longer there. A couple of side notes, Dr Muir resigned his commission during the Blackhawk wars because of the prohibition of Indians, etc... I don't know if his daughter and two grandchildren left with him, died or what. In 1859, it is reported that Valencourt Van Orsdale married for the first time to Louisa Wright, whose father was a "big Irishman and I believe her mother was an Indian(you can now understand some of our confusion-two wifes, same first name, both half-breeds). I am not sure if he is quoted as saying that or not, but that is the idea I get. Anyway, I am looking for any info on his first wife, kids and father in law.

Those who subscribe to "The Vanguard" may have seen my query, "trying to determine the parents of DERRICK VANNOSDALL (1777-1853) of Dutchess Co.NY who married Elizabeth Rynders in 1799 and his brother AARON (1788-1854) who married Elizabeth Appleby. All are buried in the Middlebush Cemetery, Dutchess Co. NY. I believe an error was made by a previous researcher in the 1940's in her attempt to get into the DAR. She listed Derrick and Aaron as sons of Teunis and Jane Wier VanArsdale , Montgomery, Orange CoNY. My research here in Dutchess Co. has Derrick & Aaron listed as children of Dirck VanArsdale b.ca.1740's Raritan NJ married Marytje Vermilyea on 29Jan1767 in Hopewell Junction Dut.Co. NY. Records of the DRC Hopewell Junction, Poughkeepsie and Fishkill include many Van Arsdales, Osdel, and Vermilyea. Unfortunately the pages that would include the dates near the birth of both Derrick and Aaron are missing. My conjecture is that Derrick and Aaron were of the Dutch Ref. faith as was Dirck and Marytje however Teunis and Jane Wier VanArsdale were of the Presbyterian faith. If Dirck and Marytje are the parents my "brick wall" is, "WHO ARE DIRCK'S PARENTS"? A "Roll Call" sounds wonderful! I've followed with much interest all of the "Van" information placed on the list, but never contributed. Better late than never. My brick wall is my GGGfather, Garret (B.) Vanarsdall. Lived in Mercer Co., KY until late 1850's, then moved to Blue Twp, Jackson Co. MO. Born in KY ca1815, md Rebecca Van Fleet in Washington Co. Ky 1835. I think he had brother "Peter". I also think he was related (son or nephew) to Simon, b 1777 NJ. Garret lived next to Simon 1840 & 1850. May be some of the "Lost" descendants of Simon of PA referred to by Mark Alan Thomas in his recent publications. Garret's son, Jesse, md Margret Donahue (Donoho) of Jackson Co. Mo. Surname: VANARTSDALEN Emma had a younger brother, Edward [1861-1922]. Edward had a son, Monroe Fenton VanArtsdalen [April 9,1890-Feb.1950]. Monroe was my grandfather and his daughter, my mother remembers the family talking about Aunt Emma. We all grew up in Olney [correct spelling] which is a section of Philadelphia. In Olney is St.James Methodist Church. In the cemetery behind the church is a headstone with Edward and wife Catherine. Next to that stone is a headstone that reads : Jesse VanArtsdalen Jan.19,1819 - Aug.22,1886 Sidney his wife Nov.2,1823 - Mar.2,1907 I think the sexes have been swapped somehow. If Sidney was a male wouldn't Emma be Emma Loutz and not Emma VanArtsdalen? I hope this is of some help.

[Maria was a Vanartsdalen] Osceola County Michigan Death certificate states Emmas mother was Jessia Vanartsdalen and her father was Sidney Loutz. She is not Emma, the daughter of Isaac Vanodell which is sometimes written Vanartsdalen. In which Vanartsdalen family does she fit? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Dear Van Cousins All, Sharon Kelley and I have been trying to attach my G-G-grandfather, Levi Van Arsdale of Morris County, NJ and my Great-Grandfather, Nathaniel Horton Van Arsdale to one of the known Van lines for ages! :-} Levi was born ca 1800, married twice: 1) Abigail Goble in 1824 with whom he had a son, Abner G. After Abigail's death, he married 2) Ann(a) Eliza Horton in 1833. Grandpa Nathaniel is their son, born 1838. He married Margaretta Sanford in NJ in 1862 and by 1864 the family which then included Aunt Mary, was in Harrison County, Iowa where they remained until their deaths. Anyway, in puzzling over how to find the clue we need, I was going through my files when I turned up Grandpa Nathaniel's death certificate. BINGO! We have known since I got his death certificate about 15 years ago that he died of diabetes, but I suddenly got the idea that, since this cruel disease is hereditary, maybe it would be the missing piece to the puzzle. Although, as far as we know diabetes skipped his three daughters, the horrible disease has hit hard in his Tate grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It took my father last September. So...my thought is, does anyone else have diabetes in their Van line? If you do, it might mean that Levi and his descendents come from your line. (Of course, it COULD be from the Horton side of the family, instead...or the first Simon could have passed it on to All of us!) Well, that's my idea.
