    1. [VanArsdale-L] Simon VanArsdale. b.1750

    3. Hello- I just discovered this list and am relatively new to genealogy- please excuse any 'newbie' errors... I've searched my VanOsdol line back to Simon VanArsdale, 11 Nov 1750 and died 21 June 1820. That's all the info I have on him. One son was Theodorus Williamson VanOsdol (name changed) born 1781 in Conewago, York Co. PA, married in Shelby Co. KY 1801 to Mary Adams b 1784; their son Theodore Williamson VanOsdol b 17 March 1816 Henry Co. KY moved to Switzerland Co. IN and eventually to DesMoines Co. IA where he died 31 Oct. 1868. He married Hannah Banta (b 12 March 1819) on 13 Oct. 1836. A son John Wesley VanOsdol b 20 Jan 1844 married Lydia Poole. A son of this union, Thomas O. VanOsdol married Mattie Walker- a daugher, Mary Lydia, was my grandmother. Anyone on this list have more info that can take me earlier than Simon? I saw a post on here earlier about the will of Jan Simonse VanArsdalen and a son Simon was listed. How do I find out if this is the same Simon? I'm also looking for more info about the wife of Thomas O., Mattie Walker, and her lineage. Her mother, Hannah Friend, was an Indian according to family lore and I have no idea how to find more info. Thanks for any help, and I'm willing to share what I have found. Jerry Carden, Urbana, IL

    3. Flatlands Town Records, page 93 On Nov 19, 1660, Simon Jansz signed a declaration as to the lands of "Pieter Claessen" as "Symen Jansen Van Arsdalen". --- Flatlands Town Records, Deeds, Miscellaneous, 1661-1831, Page 510. 1662, Apr 3 - Simon Jansen Van Aertsdalen (Magistrate) was one of the signers of a petion to the honorable Peter Stuyvesant and the Council of New Netherland to determine the boundries of the village of Amersfoort and Midwout. -- Simon Jansz was selected to represent Amersfoort in the convention holden at New Amsterdam, on Jul 3, 1663, to engage several Dutch Towns to keep up an armed force for public protection. (The register of New Netherland, page 143.) I received this information from Ruth Van Arsdale in PA. It was organized by Edward Van Arsdale, fro m Long Island. He died several years ago, but was very active in researching the Van Arsdalen family. Other information comes from Mabel Spell. I'll send it along if you need it. Here is the paragraph, it is from 10 pages i copied many years ago, but it was before I knew that my mother's family (Van Orsdoll ) was the same as the Van Arsdalen family. So I didn't seem to write down what it was. page 15:" It has been said that Symon Jansen was commissioned by the Dutch goverment to investigate the possibility of establishing a pottery manufacturing business in New Amsterdam, that he had a wife and two children who remained in Holland and who died of the plague shortly before his scheduled return to Holand. When he received the news of their deaths, he decided to remain in America. However, Mabel Spell disagreed with this statement. She believed that Symon Jansen was unmarried when he arrived in New Amsterdam in 1653 at the age of 24." Here is another account from a letter written in the 1920's and is on file at the Ind.State Library pamphlet file. It is written by a Mr. Webster. The four page file is Titled : Sketch of the VanArsdalen Family. "The VanArsdall who was the ancestor of that family in this country arrived at New Netherlands from Holland at an early period inthe ship Dynasty, empowered by the Government, or some company in Holland, to examine the country about New Amsterdam to ascertain whether it was practicable to establish in this country a pottery for the manufacture of china ware. After fulfilling the object of his mission,, and with his baggage on board the vessel awaiting the day to sail for his native land, he received a letter from his father stating that a pestilence was then raging there and that his wife and two children had departed this life. This sad news changed his design of returning to holland and he settled at Flatlands on Long Island. There he married. [ then follows a long totally misinformed line of people ] Most of the rest of the people settled in Mercer co. KY and eventually moved to Crawfordsville, ind. There is an abstract of a Christopher VanArsdall's Rev.War Pension file. He lived in Ky and Gibson co. Ind. His age at application was 95 years old. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ by E. TH. Unger Since his family name seemed to indicate a Dutch background as most likely, one of Simons descendants some years ago asked the CBG to undertake a thorough research project. The records at the CBG revealed that the name Van Arsdale occasionally showed up in the early 17th century in the city of Leiden. As this was the only connection it seemed reasonable to start the project there in the municipal archives. From Leiden the trail led to Gouda where finally the papers (including the letters) were discovered pertaining to the legacy of fl.1000 to Simon or his issue under the will of 1 March 1707 of his niece Geertuijt van Heasdael (!). It turned out later (after our research was completed) that someone already had written an article on the distribution of Geertruijt’s estate (D.J. Knoops 1950). Simon Jansz van Aersdal is named in this paper, but the fact that he lived in New Netherland was not mentioned.. As a result the importance of the article for the American van Arsdal family was not recognized. Further research showed that before his departure (1653) Simon had been married in Amsterdam to a certain Marijtje Baltusdr., whom he left behind and who died in 1655 in Amsterdam. She gave him two children both of whom died at a young age. Simon was a potter in Amsterdam, an occupation which he seemed to have exercised in his early days in New Netherland as well. The pre-marriage papers (to the above Marijtje Baltusdr. in Amsterdam show that he was born about 1627 (which agrees with American data) in “Niekerck”. From other family sources it is clear that this was meant to be the village of Nukerke, near Oudenaarde in East Flanders. Jan Poulusz van Aersdal, first a carpet weaver, later a mustard maker, and his wife Geertje Philipsdr. Halters were according to some documents in Gouda the parents of Simon. Jan Poulsz van Aersdal moved to Gouda around 1642, where he became a member of the reformed church, and bought a house in the Naaijerstraat. He also bought the house next door and later, in 1650, he combined the two houses into one in 1753. Since that time the house probably changed little, although it is unclear how much of the original two houses remained. Note: On 1 March 1707 Pieter Verveen and his wife Geertruijt van Haesdaele, living in Gouda, made their last will and testament. The surviving partner will have full control over the estate. Thereafter, after deduction of legacies (1,000 guilders a year plus 1,000 guilders in cash to Philippina Joosten van Haesdaelen and an amount of 500 guilders for Lijsbeth Hensbeeck) the remainder shall be divided one half amongst the closest reletives of Pieter, the other half for those of Geertruijt. Furthermore an amount of 1,000 guilders shall be set aside as a legacy, instead of distribution for Geertruijt’s uncle Symon Jansz van Haesdaelen, living in New Netherland, or his heirs. However if this sum is not claimed within six years after the death of the longest living spouse, then that amount shall be distributed amongst the other heirs.(Will executed before Johan van Middelant, Notary in Gouda).

    3. Readington Reformed Church History, 1719-1969 Reverand Simeon Van Artsdalen Infiltration of witchcraft and Methodism seems to have created turbulence in the short career of Simeon Van Artsdalen, who died after serving in Readington three years, from 1783 to 1786. Despite disturbing consistory reports, his brief years must have been satisfying ones, sor twice during that time he turned down offers to go to larger churches. Both the Refomed Church of New Brunswick, and the reformed Church in New York sought him, but he refused. Apparently the Dutch language was still very much alive in the Reformed Church iat this time. Records throughout most of Simeon's pastorate are written in Dutch. A footnote states that wherver Domine Van Artsdalen signed his name he spelled it "Van Artsdalen". But the Historical Directory of the Reformed Church in America, 1628-1965, and some historians use Van Arsdalen, some even Van Arsdaelen. Domine (Simeon) Van Artsdalen was born in North Hampton, PA in 1754, the son of Nicholas Van Artsdalen and Jammetje Vansant (Van Zant) and was baptised 18 Jan 1761 in the Reformed Church of North and South Hampton at Churchville, Bucks County, PA. The family name is interesting since in 1736 we find one Simon Van Aersdaalen appointed helper ath the North Branch church at a time whrn the four collegiate congregrations were attempting to procure from holland and assistant to Domine Theodorus jacobus Frelinghuysen. Domine Van Artsdalen was said to have studied at Princeton. He applied for examination for the ministry at a meeting of General Synod held at New Millstone on 1 Oct 1872. Domine Van Artsdalen was twice married, first to Maria Hoogland, and then to Magdalena Duryee who was received into the Readington Church membership on 25 Nov 1785. He made his home on the church "glebe", as the 130 acre farm with parsonage was called then (glebe is an English word for church property). The glebe was located on the Dreahook Road, between Readington and Whitehouse and bordered on the Schamp (Schomp) burying ground, still in existence. There he died and was buried just outside the west wall of the /Schamp burying ground. In 1815, his remains were moved to the Readington Church yard where his plot is located near that of Domine Studdiford. His tombstone reads: THE REV. SIMEON VAN ARTSDALEN Who departed this life the 26 of May 1786, In the 33rd year of his life. Here lies entomed a servant of the Lord, A faithful preacher of His Sacred Word Who now with Christ in glory is set down, Decked in white robes and honored with a crown. Adjacent to his tombstone is that of his first wife which reads" In Memory of Mrs. Mary Van Artsdalen, who died July 8th, 1784, in the 30th year of her age. (Apparently her death came only shortly after her husband had accepted the Readington charge). He is remembered as one of the most amiable and accomplished young men of this day. He possessed both elequence and power as a preacher, was untiring in his pastoral work and ardent in his piety. His beautiful life came to and early and sudden close in less than three years.

    3. The following is an article from a New Jersey newspaper. If anyone has any idea who the parents of this Jacob is I would appreciate the information. If anyone can pin point the name of the paper it came from please let me know. Jo Sommerville, New Jersey June 29, 1867 About 5:30 AM a little boy, the son of Mr. Andrew Heard, had his throat cut by a man named Jacob Van Arsdale. The boy, 12 years old, went to call Mr. Van for breakfast when the latter commited the horrible deed. Van was working at shoemaking. Relatives found the boy lying in a pool of blood with a stab wound in the neck made by a shoe knife. Apparently Van planned to kell one or more of the family, as a gun heavily charged and a sharp hatchet were found secreted in a small bureau. The cause fo the killing was an incident at the Heard house earlier. A black servant girl was seated at the table before Van, and he became very angry. The bloody rags upon which he wiped his hands have been found in his room. It is reported that Van once threatened to kill his own father. Mr. Van was apprehended at the train station by the sheriff. He is about 45 years old. The trial will be in September.

    3. The Six Mile Run church Dutch Reformed church at the Franklin Park, Somerset County, was organized on Nov. 15, 1710, but no baptismal records are known to exist prior to 1743, excect about a dozen by the founder, Paulus van Vlecq. During the period covered by this record, the pastors at SMR were Theodorus J. Frelinghuysen, 1720-1747, Johannes Arondeus, acting at times, 1747-1754 Johannes Leydt 1748-1783; John M. van Harlingen, 1787-1795; James S. Cannon, 1797-1826. Because of concern for its preservation, the baptismal register od the SMR is not generally available (!!). In 1919, a careful transcription was made and printed in the Somerset Historical Quarterly. This publication is limited and frequently not avaiable to the researcher. These records are reprinted for the conveninece of the readers of the New Jersey Genesis, particularly those who have New Jersey Dutch Ancestry. 3. Dear Friends I found some possible avenues of my VanArsdale research and wanted to know if anyone has seen this: In the 1850 NYC City Directory was: Simon VanArsdale, with wife Elizabeth and son, William. Simon was a "carman", son William was policeman. When I found Elizabeth in the 1860 Census she was a widow and had living in the same household was a son Theodore, age 18, and son John J., age 16. William had married by this time and was out of the household. William later settled in Westchester Co. and ran a livery stable and was an undertaker. William was born in 1835. Does this sound familiar to anyone or can this seem to connect to the other Van Arsdale families in NYC? -- Alvie L. 3. Today I received a complete surrogate court file for Wilhelmina VanArsdale who died March 6, 1886 in NYC and her lawful heirs at the time of her probate was listed as Peter Benjamin VanArsdale, and two grand children named William Brell and Pierre Brell. There is no mention of a son name William H. VanArsdale. In Peter's surrogate record, who died just after making his will on May 31, 1893, there is no mention of William H. VanArsdale. So it is back to the drawing board. I still think William H. VanArsdale who was a police office in 1840 city directory is the son of Simon VanArsdale and his wife Elizabeth but only need proof. -- Alvie L.
