    1. Re: [VAMONTGO] Montgomery County Early Settlers Map
    2. Ed Marsh
    3. Hi, I just want to remind or tell folks that Montgomery County records from the 1740's until 1776 are located in the Augusta County archives. Chalkley's Chronicles of Scotch Irish Settlement is a wonderful source of abstracts from the Augusta Court records and I have found much on the settlement of the north and south forks of the Roanoke River and the New River. For those of you not native to the area, the Indian Road came down the Catawba valley (which is a watershed of the upper James River) and over onto the drainage of the Roanoke. The road followed up and over the Allegheny ridge and onto waters of the New River at Drapers Meadows and the Glades. This is modern-day Blacksburg. Stroubles Creek runs on the eastern side of Blacksburg and down to the New River near Ingles Crossing (later Ferry). Toms (Jones) Creek runs down the west side of town and along Brush Mountain (used to be Craigs Creek Mountain) and into the New to the north of the Horseshoe (a huge hairpin in the New River). The Augusta Court appointed the early settlers to build roads from one place to another and you can learn a lot by studying the before mentioned map of the county.
