I just posted this on the BARTLETT GenForum, and am looking for feedback on the analysis and conclusions. John G(?Gardner) BARTLETT was early settler of Henry Co, VA; in RevWar; died at 83 in Henry Co, VA. This is per history book of Warren Co, IN where sons John H and Thomas lived. No one has ever found a record of John G BARTLETT in Henry Co or the RevWar or has any dates for him other than he died at 83. His ch are reported: William 1784; John H 1785; Betsy 1787; Martha 1789; Thomas 1790. We've concluded that John was in Botetourt Co 1810 census (alone); he m 1813 Botetourt Co, VA Hester HINKLE; was in Montgomery Co 1820 census with 3 ch [10001-2001]; and then went to Warren Co, IN. Thomas m 1816 Franklin Co, VA Sabrina HILL (who was b 1792 Frederick Co, VA) and is probably in Montgomery Co 1820 census with 3 ch [30001-0011]; and then went to Warren Co, IN. There appear to be no VA records for William, Betsy or Martha. It is strange to me that we have lots of other BARTLETT records in Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry and Patrick Co, VA in the pre- and post-RevWar time frame; but none for John G or his ch. Why is John H in Botetourt/Montgomery Co area? Let's look at Garner BARTLETT. He was in Loudoun Co VA 1765; moved to Berkeley Co by 1787; then to Botetourt Co by 1795; and finally in Montgomery Co 1810 census; and his will there in 1811, which named his ch: William, Reuben, John, Thomas, Lydia TOWNSLEY, and 3 not named. William m 1800 Frederick Co, VA Lydia POWELL; is in Berkeley Co 1810 census, Frederick Co 1820 census, Montgomery Co 1830 census, Floyd Co 1831 tax list; and his widow, Lydia, is then in Floyd 1850 and 60 census adjacent to their son, Leroy. Similarly Reuben is in Montgomery Co 1810 (near his father, Garner), 20 and 30 census; Floyd 1831 tax list and 1840 census (as widower) There appear to be no records in the area for Garner's sons Thomas and John. There are records in Montgomery Co for a Thomas and John, but they've been "tagged" for sons of John G of Henry Co... Unless someone can find ANY record (other than a statement in a history book, which history book statements have frequently proved to be inaccurate) in Henry Co, or that area, then I'm forced to conclude that the Thomas and John BARTLETT's in Montgomery Co, VA are the sons of Garner BARTLETT. It may well be that he was John Gardner BARTLETT, and the history book used the John G and was a little confused on Henry Co. By the way Garner's estimated birth was c1750 which would have made him 61 when he died. He was probably in Loudoun Co during the RevWar, but I've not found him in the DAR Patriot index, but he could have served. Garner also had a sister Betsy and one of the not named ch in his will is purported to be Betsy... I have struggled with this conclusion for some time - there just isn't enough information/families in this area of VA to support two families with William, John and Thomas BARTLETT children - Garner's Montgomery Co Will stakes a claim on them. Perhaps a careful tracking of deeds and the annual personal property tax lists in Montgomery Co 1800-1830 would help... I would very much appreciate any feedback on this analysis and conclusion.
