I have looked at Mr. Dollarhide's book on the change in Montgomery Counties Boundaries. I see that in 1790, Montgomery County and Botetourt were much larger and were adjacent. By 1830 both were much smaller but still adjacent. By the census of 1840 they were no longer adjacent--they touched only in one point and Roanoke County was between them. Here is my question. I think that my Archy Moses lived in Montgomery County if not all most of his life. I believe that he grew up and continued to live in his adulthood at McDonald's Mill. My best guess is that McDonald's Mill is and always has been almost within walking distance of the border between the two counties. Here is my question: We have found a James Moses for whom all of his children were born in Botetourt County. He is still in Botetourt County in the 1830 census. Then in the 1840 census he and his family reside in Montgomery County, Lafayette TWP. Did the boundary for Montgomery County remain exactly the same when Roanoke County was formed or did the boundary for Montgomery County change just a tiny bit? Dollarhide's book makes it look as if the Montgomery County border did not change at all which would mean that James moved sometime between 1830 and 1840. But if the boundary changed just a little when Roanoke COunty was formed, it might mean that James remained on the same land, but suddenly his farm was in Montgomery County. I am hoping there is someone on the list who has a bit of expertise on the changing boundaries of Montgomery COunty. Thanks so much for your time. Marsha in Wv
Morgan P. Robinson's book _Virginia Counties: Those Resulting from Virginia Legislation_ does indicate (without giving any details) that part of Botetourt Co was added to Montgomery Co. It's unclear when this took place, but perhaps by an Act of 1830-31 Regards, Freddie S. > I have looked at Mr. Dollarhide's book on the change in Montgomery > Counties Boundaries.
