Thanks to everyone for your info and contacts for info regarding the Whitt log cabin that was located on the Radford University till the 1950's. Following info came from James Gilson, archivist at the Radford University. The following information comes from an article in the March 27, 1953 edition of the Grapurchat school newspaper: "Log House, Formerly Used as Campus Museum, Being Moved; Mr. Gilbert Preserves Historical Landmark" The log house, locally known as the Whitt House, has been razed from the campus of Radford College and will be reconstructed near Claytor Lake. The old house has been a landmark on the campus since 1932, when it was moved from Whitt's Mill on Meadow Creek in Montgomery Co. The article goes on to quote a letter written by John Preston McConnell to a friend in 1932. According to McConnell, "It is claimed that the house was built in 1775. .... Shortly after the removal of the house to the college campus, Mr. E.B. Lucas, a resident of the Meadow Creek community, wrote a sketch about the building. He said in part that the house which had been moved from Meadow Creek was formerly the property of the Roops. 'It belonged,' he said, 'to the Brothers Captain Jacob and Ruben Roop of Montgomery County militia. It was erected on a specially selected site which they named Angel's Rest because from this point a complete circle of the rainbow would sometimes be visible." "The remaining logs and chimneys have been taken over by Mr. William E. Gilbert, who is removing them to his property on Claytor Lake. There it is proposed to use the remaining logs which have not been affected by the termites in the construction of two wings to a log house. It is Mr. Gilbert's intent that this house hall be made available for use to college students as a camp site on the lake and sill thus perpetuate its association with the memeory of Mr. Whitt and his forebears and the project of Dr. McConnell to preserve for posterity those things which were significant of the culture from which they rose." Understanding that one of the houses which used logs from the Whitt cabin burned down. Can anyone now tell me where the Whitt Mill was located in Meadow Creek community?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks to all for your replies and connections. Best Regards, Doug Lovell [email protected]
