Besides a brief citation in Dickenson's book, _Entitled!, the only record of this event comes from William Ruffner, who was an agent of the American Colonization Society (the organization that transported the slaves to Liberia) and who claimed that the episode caused quite a stir in Christiansburg (among other things, local townspeople encouraged Bratton's son-in-law, Dr. Hugh McGavock Kent, to block the emancipation). I would greatly appreciate any information about 1) the will of Dorothea's husband, James Bratton, Jr., who died in early 1814 (probably 2 January 1814); 2) the will of Dorothea Bratton, who died, I think, around 1854, or 3) the emancipation itself. Thanks!.
