I have been told that Robert King died in Washington County but that his WILL is in Montgomery County about 1820. I also have been told that the 1820 Wills has been transcribed and published in a book???? Who can help me find this will? Thanks for any help. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Tami, What a great find! As it turns out, this obituary is how Vonny knew how Riley died. However, I had not seen it. It seems there are some useful clues in it. First, it states that Riley's parents were still living "three miles north" of Bluefield, which is where he grew up, when the accident happened in 1903. Three miles north of Bluefield appears to be about halfway between Bramwell and Princeton. Second, it states that his body is on its way to Vicar, VA. I only found a Vicar W. VA, but there is a Vicar's Chapel Church in nearby Scott County, VA. (I used modern maps first.) Looking at a more detailed map, it seems the town of Brush Fork is about three miles north of Bluefield. However, when I searched for Booths of any spelling for Scott County, VA none came up. Checking another spelling, I found a Vicker in Montgomery County, Virginia--also fairly close by. Checking the 1900 Mty Co., VA census for "Booth" I came up with none of Riley's family names. Checking "Boothe" I find an interesting coincidence in Mty Co., 1900: Riley T. Boothe, age 46! But of course he is too old to be our subject. (His wife is Nancy and he has no sons named William, either.) Looking at the 1895 map of Mercer: http://www.livgenmi.com/1895/WV/County/mercer.htm I see many smaller towns to which the obit writer may have been referring, but do not see Bluefield [!] Seems like Montcalm or Littlesburg might be in the area where his parents lived. My online search for a township map of Mercer was unsuccessful. (That would help us narrow down the Booths in the 1900 census, with regard to which ones might be Riley's parents.) I hit "paydirt" when I found this great "American Memory" map site: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdTitles26.html There are GREAT historic maps here. However, there is not a Mercer township map. *Vonny kindly and gently [!] pointed out that Riley's wife was named Martha, not Katie. [My mistake. One of the hazards of working on two many lines at once!] This means that all I did doesn't county because I was acting on erroneous data. Back to the 1900 census: Here is a list and explanation of the census districts for that year: http://www.us-census.org/states/westvirginia/teams/Mercer1900.htm All I could make out without a township map is that Rock Magisterial District is just north of Bluefield. If we can trust Ancestry.com's census index, the only male heads of household in Mercer Co., WV in 1900 are: John H. Booth, b. 1857, in Beaver Pond. In his household are his wife Mary E. and seven children. They have been married for 15 years and she has born 7 children, seven of whom are alive. This pretty much eliminates Mary as Riley's mother, but it does not eliminate John as his father, as John has only been married to Mary since 1885 and Riley was probably born circa 1880; and John may have had a previous wife. We can find out by looking for John in the 1880 census. (I saw no Booth households near John that would indicate older sons.] There are no heads of household under the "Boothe" spelling who are old enough to be Riley's father. (Under the soundex search I did find a Giles Butt who was born in 1854. While it is hard to see this as a variation of the surname "Booth," he is in Beaver Pond and his oldest child at home was born in 1883. It follows that he might have a boy born circa 1880 who had left home: but he and his wife had only been married for 17 years. So, we strike out again. There are others in this "Butt" surname who are the appropriate age to be Riley's parents, if Vonny thinks they are worth pursuing. I am not sure what I think about it.) Moving to the 1880 census to see if we can find John H. Booth with a previous wife who might have been Riley's mother, we find that there are no Booths of any spelling listed in the index for Mercer County. Moving to a statewide 1880 census search, we find a John Booth in Barbour Co. who was born in 1845 and has a young family. His wife's name is Mary. The only John Booths I found who had birth years close to that of the John H. Booth we found in Mercer in 1900 were: 1. John Booth in McDowell County, WV, who was born in 1857. His wife Mary V. was age 21 (b.1869); he has a son Elijah who was eight months old (Elijah Riley Booth?); and his sister Rebecca J. Booth, age 20, lived with them. 2. John Booth in Marshall Co., WV b.1858. He has wife Martha age 26; daughter Mary G., age 4 and son Clarence O., age 2. 3. John Booth in Mason Co., WV b. 1857 with wife Mazie age 18; and son Thomas 2 months. (Thomas Riley?) Once again, lots of speculation, no results. This really is a tough one, Vonny. I wonder if the census taker missed Riley Booth's 1900 household, and/or that of his father's in 1900? Anyway--I give up! This one has me beat. I hope someone else, perhaps someone from the area, can help. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/yAC.2ACE/913.1 Message Board Post: well, that is the problem. I don't know much about the Gillepsie family. I know my grandfather's name was William Gillespie and my grandmother (his wife) name was Birdie Gillespie. I not even sure of the spelling of her name. Both are burried in West Virginia. Birdie was a Gordon. I'm really looking for info on Birdie's mother's parents. They called Birdie's mother "momma dillion". So, it would be her parents. My dad talked about going to his grandparents house that were full blooded indians passed Celanese plant and after you cross a bridge on the right. My dad has a lot of aunts & uncles that still live in West Virginia. Would anyone have any info to help me get started?
