    3. I live within 3 miles of Paint Creek or in the book Painted Creek, part of the trail that they took to the salt springs at Malden, W.Va. about 10 miles from me, where they camped, hunted and took back salt to the Shawnee camp in Ohio. I was born in Pulaski, Va, near Dublin. It's my understanding that Mary Draper Ingles was living in Draper Valley on the New River in now Pulaski County, when she was captured. I have a photo of her family's ferry landing taken where I wrote in the early 1900's. Ingles Ferry. On her way back home with the Dutch woman, she made it to Mr. Harman's farm in Eggleston. I have seen the field before. I'm in Eggleston at least once a year. have relatives that live there. I love that part of the New River, very calm and deep with cliffs in some places. 3. The book "Follow the River" by James Alexander Thom is a story based on the experiences of Mary Draper Ingles who, in 1755, was captured in Montgomery Co, VA, by the Shawnee Indians, & taken to Ohio. She escaped and walked all the way back home, following the Ohio River, then the New River. Legend is that the 800 mile trek took her 6 weeks during Fall & Winter. This book was made into a movie and airs every now & then on the Hallmark Channel. www.amazon.com has the book & the DVD. Another book about the same story is "Shawnee Captive: The Story of Mary Draper Ingles" by Mary Furbee. I haven't read this one, but did find it on Amazon. The description sounds like it gives more background on Mary & her family before her capture, as well as telling the story of her capture and escape. Mary's capture took place near what is now called the Duck Pond on the Virginia Tech campus, in Blacksburg, VA. This area used to be named Draper's Meadow. (Note that there is some disagreement over the exact location of her capture, though.) The Palisades which Mary climbed are located at Eggleston, VA (Giles Co), off Rt. 460. See websites below for a photo of the Palisades. Here's a site written by a descendant of Mary Draper Ingles. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nwa/draper.html Here are some sites with more of the story.....and some with photos. http://www.blueridgecountry.com/ingles/ingles.html http://www.aceraft.com/mediapg/medapg13.html http://maryinglestrailblazers.homestead.com/ Smithfield Plantation gift shop sells the first version of the story which was written by Mary's son. http://www.smithfieldplantation.org/giftshop.html Here's a site for descendants of Mary Draper Ingles, and a notice for a family reunion. http://genforum.genealogy.com/ingles/ As you can probably tell, I'm fascinated by this story! :-) Sandy in Montgomery Co, VA ----- Original Message ----- From: <chp_hays@yahoo.com> To: <VAMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 07, 2006 1:42 PM Subject: [VAMONTGO] Indian captive stories > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/yAC.2ACE/954 > > Message Board Post: > > In tracing my various family lines I have come across some "Indian > captive" stories that are very interesting as well as entertaining. I went to Heritage Quest Online and found Thomas and Katie Pate in the 1930 Census. In 1930 they had 5 children listed---William B age 15, James age 12(I think this should be Jane. There was a Jane in the 1920 Census listed as age 2 and 8/12), Richard E. age 8, Frank R. age 6 and Hyburnia age 3. In the 1920 Census they also had a daughter named Henrietta age 11, Bertha D. age 8 and a Katie E. age 11/12 months(she must have died as she's not listed in the 1930 Census) I hope this helps you in your search.

    2. _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~plowscrew/_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~plowscrew/) In my studies, I have seen that MANY Hessians deserted and became Americans. Since there were so many Germans, still speaking German, in VA and PA, it was a snap! I am not sure the Continentals cared that much about them deserting, either, since they had "no dog in the hunt" but had been pressed into service by their Duke. Sharon

So, maybe you have just showed me her father or grandfather PINES here. She stated in the Census that her father and mother were born in VA. Does anyone have anything on this PINES reference here? 2. Hi, thanks so very much for posting this. Can you please check Gasper Link again, though? How can he only have 3 blacks and no white? He is my forefather and had a wife and children, and one slave named "Bob" he left in his will. He was a Hessian soldier pressed into service by his Duke (of Hessia) who deserted and blended in with the Virginia Germans after being marched south after the Battle of Saratoga Springs as a POW of the Continental Army. Two of his daughters married Harless boys (Horlasch) and his granddaughter, Catherine's daughter with Abraham Harless, married John Fillinger and they crossed the mountains into what is now WV. If you can verify this information with Gasper Link, I would appreciate it. I am also descended from Sebastian "Boston" Nosler and the Price (Preiss) family-- all Germans. I hope to come up there this summer from Florida and see that place. How much lan d did 1795 Montgomery County, VA, encompass? Sharon Lee Gates Apopka, FL
