Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/yAC.2ACE/840.2.1.1 Message Board Post: I found this online at, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barbs/white_sulphur_springs_monument.html White Sulpher Springs Confederate Soldiers Monument The Monument is all that's left of the White Sulpher Springs Resort that was used as a hospital during the Civil War here in Montgomery Co. DIRECTIONS Coming from Roanoke on old Route 11- 460 west , at the foot of Christiansburg Mountain, turn right on state Rt.641 The Den Hill Rd. Watching your odometer , travel 2.5 miles (winding road). You will pass by a number of houses, through a small tunnel. In a small turn to the right there are a set of wooden steps leading down the bank , easy to see (they are visible on one of the pictures). If you are coming from the Blacksburg , Christiansburg area, I think the easiest way, is to turn off Rt 460 at University Motors, the Jennelle Road, travel down to the intersection of Rts. 723/641. There is a store there at the crossroads. Travel 641 (Den Hill Rd.) 7 tenths of a mile to the next intersection (641/603). Go straight through the Intersection. Take 641, 1 mi.4 tenths to said set of steps. You can see the Marker from the road, but its just a stones throw to it , the grass was not high - Sat 5-21-05. I don't know who mows around the area, but I have been there before and the grass hasn't been objectionable .If any one has any questions , drop me a line or I'm in the book. Its a nice drive as well! Wayne Haley Vdotdad@aol.com

I have limited information on the three at home but not on me now. From what I remember, Capt. Sumter was awarded a cane from the state of SC for his support of the Southern cause. The cane supposedly was in the Cburg area for many years. His son Charles worked for N&W as a detective. He lived in Cburg first then Rnoke. He died of a heart attack in Memphis, TN and was brought back to Cburg to be buried in Sunset. One source I found also lists him as a lawyer. Any info you might have would be appreciated. I'm related to India Sumter. Thanks, Steve

    3. Michael, Have you read the book Follow the River, by Thom? This is a novel based on the true story of Mary Ingles. You can buy it at Barns and Noble. It is very interesting reading. Thom's researches his American novels and traveling to the source of action and going over the same route the Shawnee's took with their captives. Just a short note to mention that in the book Thom's says Casper Barrier a neighbor to Bettie Draper was a widower, bald and lonely was talking to Bettie and went down the path to get water and when Bettie looked back she seen a necked Indian painted and crouched over him, chopping into the back of his head. Caspers bald scalp was bright with blood. Bettie ran into her house got her baby screaming Mary Ellie. Col. Patton was writing a report to Col. Washington. Indians captured Mary and Bettie and other who are named, but you can read that yourself, goes on to say the first stop was a hut of Mr. Barger, Mary thought that they were going to attack the old man, described as snowier haired and being Philip Barger, they cut his head off with the sword of Col. Patton's. Next stop was the Lybrook cabin where they gave the head to Mrs. Lybrook. From this story there were Two Bargers killed Casper Barrier and Philip Barger. This is a must read, if your family is mentioned. The story was first hand and told by Mary Ingles and others. I descend from Col. James Patton who also lost his life that day in July the 8th 1755. Also there was a movie made called Follow the River. Col. William Preston was a nephew to Patton, so very well documented in his papers. This did happen on the Virginia tech campus. William Prestons home Smithfield is right there and his private cemetery. I have had the pleasure to visit all this history and the Smithfield home is now a museum. I will be going to a softball tournament in Wichita Falls Texas this afternoon and will be back Sunday, so if you write me back, I will answer you Monday. Go out and find this Book, it gives the details and you get a better picture of what happened. Gay Nix Gay Nix warpaint1128@sbcglobal.net

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Chamberlain Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/yAC.2ACE/997 Message Board Post: I am seeking all available information on James Chamberlain, who apparently d. in Montgomery Co., VA, in 1786. Both the administration and the inventory of his estate are listed as having taken place in Montgomery Co. in the fall of that year. As far as I can tell, he is the same James Chamberlain who was granted a land patent in Orange Co., VA, in Feb. 1742, at the same time as Jeremiah Chamberlain, apparently his brother, was granted an adjoining tract. James is supposed to have remained in VA for the rest of his life, while Jeremiah moved to York Co., PA, where he d. in 1776. The two, who are said to have arrived in the Colonies c1742, were reportedly the older brothers of my ancestor Ninian Chamberlain (1718-1804), who came from Ireland and settled in E. TN. Of the three brothers, James seems to be the one about whom there is the least information available. I would thus greatly appreciate any information from tax lists, court proceedings, land purchases, birth records, marriage records, and the like, that would help me fill in the many blanks of James' life.
