    2. It has been pointed out to me that in discussing the library of VA I used the word "microfiche" instead of microfilm. WHoops!! What they have there is mic rofilm. I can't believe I wrote that wrong and then read it wrong and didn't catch it either time. Sorry about that. It's a pain to use, but it's microFILM. Karen Worley

In the last year I've done both RIchmond and Rocky Mount (county seat of Franklin). It depends on what you wnat and how long you have. Richmond has EVERYTHING as far as official records. You can get many counties all in one place. Also they have the personal property tax listings for every year up to 1850 for I guess all counties (all I looked for anyway). Those have been VERY helpful to me because my folks didn't own land. At the courthouse in Rocky Mount they did not have copies of personal property taxes at all. The above having been said, Richmond is a pain because everything is on microfiche, including the indexes that tell you what other microfiches to use to find things. For deeds and marriages Rocky Mount was much easier, faster, and better on the eyes. For deeds, Rocky Mount has the copy that was transcribed by the court clerk. I didn't do deeds in Richmond, because I'd already done them in Rocky Mount, but I think that in Richmond they probably have the original deed as hand written by whoever wrote it. Also in ROcky Mount I went to the local library, where they had the Raney Collection (notes of local genealogist, very helpful). Richmond doesn't have that kind of stuff I don't think. Karen Worley

    3. Hi, The Virginia Room at the Roanoke City Library is a great genealogy research facility and the librarians are good help. Roanoke's closeness to Franklin and Montgomery Counties makes this even better. The archive room in the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg is wide open to the public with ledger-size xerox machines. Christmastime this year, I noticed that the original tax receipts from 1776-1790's were sewn into a binder and just out on a shelf in the back. Wow, what a resource. Also, the old Fincastle County, VA records are stored there. Franklin County I don't know as well but Rocky Mount is a little town. At any rate, Christiansburg is about 40 miles west of Roanoke and Rocky Mount is about the same distance south. All-in-all, I've never had a better time that those spent at the Virginia Room. It is good for all of VA. Richmond is better but you can spend forever looking for something. For time well spent, consider Roanoke. Please ask others if they agree with me. Good luck, Ed [email protected] wrote: > I am planning a research trip to find information on families that lived in > Montgomery, Franklin are surrounding counties before 1804. > > After 1804, they moved from VA. > > I have never been to the particular counties or to Richmond, VA for research > for my ancestors that lived in those counties. > > I have been doing most of my research regarding those counties on the web. > It's time to hit the road, I think. 3. Thought the following genealogical announcement I received from a friend might be of interest to you. I can not vouch for this company....I'm only passing along the information. Have a Happy & Safe Independence Day! Heritage Quest Completes Digitization of entire U.S. Census The following is a press release from Heritage Quest: Bountiful, UT--Heritage Quest Genealogical Services announces the completion of its massive digitization project of the entire U.S. Federal Census Records from 1790 to 1920. This project, which has taken over two years, makes available to genealogists and other researchers enhanced digital images of all 12,555 rolls of census microfilm in easy-to-use CD-ROM format for home computer use. Each roll of microfilm has a corresponding CD that is numbered with the National Archive and Record Administration (NARA) number. The digitized microfilm images are stored as databases and are replicated as CD's on demand. Orders for the digital microfilm census CD's are processed within three days of the time they are received. To celebrate the digital census project completion, Heritage Quest is extending a special "buy-3-and-get-1-FREE" offer now through July 31. The development of digital census records on CD-ROM now makes available to anyone interest in family history research the single most important resource for finding and tracing ancestors. In the past, complete census microfilms have only been available at about 20 locations in the U.S., or by inter- library loan film rental. This has frustrated many genealogists and lengthened the research process. By making the census records available on CD-ROM, the ease and speed with which research can be done is greatly accelerated. Details and ordering information are available via the internet at http://www.HeritageQuest.com or by calling 800- 760-2455. Indexes speed up the research process. To speed up searches even more Heritage Quest is creating name indexes for each census year and has completed indexes for 1790, 1800 and 1870. Indexes for some other census years will be completed in the next few months. In the process of re-indexing previously indexed censuses, like the 1790 and 1800, thousands of errors, missed names, townships, and counties have been added or corrected. Enhanced images make reading the records easier. Anyone who has used census microfilm will tell you that many of the images are too dark, too light, or too scratched to read. Through the enhanced digitization process, which Heritage Quest has developed, most of these problems have been eliminated. Names and other census information long un- recognizable are now available. Further ease of census research is possible through state-of- the-art software. Each census CD-ROM comes with state-of-the- art software that allows the user to enlarge the census image to any size, so that difficult letters or numbers can be examined. Images can be sized for easy scanning of pages, selected for copying to disc or printer, and cut and pasted into documents. By holding down the right mouse button, a special magnifier is activated and can be moved with the mouse for quick and easy reading of census images. Click on an icon and the census page changes from a positive (black on white) to a negative (white on black) image. The user-friendly software also features pointer navigation, left and right, top and bottom, and other useful features. *********************************** Hunting for SPRADLEY and KETCHUM families. 3. RE: LAWRENCE BOOK REF FOR ANDREW THOMSPON AS S/0 ELSWICK AND PATTY AKERS Cary Lynne Hall checked her database sources for Andrew Thompson and Harrietta Simpkins and writes the primary reference for the Simpkins (Cary is a Simpkins-Thompson descendant) line is Ora Belle McColman's "Descendants of Elder John Lawrence." However, McColman's book is not the source for the parents of Andrew Thompson: The source that shows Andrew as s/o Elswick Thompson and Patty Akers is from an unpublished Akers-Blackburn paper made available to Clan Thompson researchers last year. To be resolved is the identity of the Andrew Thompsons/Harriett Simpkins in Montgomery Co., Va., records. It looks like one Andrew was dead by 1858, but yet an Andrew signed the death records for his teen-age daughters who died in 1864-1865. 1858 Chancery Court Case #225 March 1858. Suit brought by Charelton family against Andrew Thompson heirs. Heirs noted to be Samuel A. Andrew Thompson qualified as administrator of the estate of Joseph Thompson who died c. 1855 in Kentucky. Lists heirs of Joseph Thompson. Case filed March 1870. Case filed against Stephen Childress as Adm of Andrews estate. I think Stephen Childress was also involved with William Thompson's estate. Andrew may have been brother to Joseph.

    2. I am planning a research trip to find information on families that lived in Montgomery, Franklin are surrounding counties before 1804. After 1804, they moved from VA. I have never been to the particular counties or to Richmond, VA for research for my ancestors that lived in those counties. I have been doing most of my research regarding those counties on the web. It's time to hit the road, I think. I will have about 4 weekdays to do research. Does anyone have an opinion on what locations to do first. The counties in question, or Richmond. Would the counties have more or different information than Richmond, or vice versa. Does anyone have an opinion? Thanks Linda (researching the Thompson and Doerty families)

    3. More records Dr. Thompson found on Andrew and Harriet Thompson at the Montgomery Co., Va., courthouse last winter. I'm still trying to reconcile the suit brought against Andrew's heirs in 1858 with the fact that one Andrew was alive in 1863-1864 to report these deaths. >From the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Montgomery Co. 2. Jemima Gee Morse
    3. Follows are records Tom Thompson found at the Montgomery Co., Va., courthouse. I can't reconcile the death of Nancy Thompson in 1863, d/o Andrew and Hariett Thompson, with the Andrew Thompson whose heirs were sued in 1858. In the suit there is a Nancy wife of John Surface, "late" Nancy Thompson. So the Nancy who died in 1863 wasn't even dead then. I would also very much like to get in touch with someone who may have information about the Joseph Thompson who died in 1855 in Kentucky. George Thompson, b. 1742, and Elisabeth Unknown, had a son, Joseph, b. 1778. It could be Joseph went to Kentucky with his uncle, Archibald Thompson, or other relatives, and died there. "1855 Chancery Court Case # 373. Andrew Thompson qualified as administrator of the estate of Joseph Thompson who died c. 1855 in Kentucky. Lists heirs of Joseph Thompson. Case filed March 1870. 3. <[email protected]> wrote June 30, 2000 Subject: Re: [VAMONTGO] ANDREW THOMPSON, S/O ELSWICK THOMPSON AND PATTY AKERS - HARRIET SIMPKINS > Andrew is not the son of Elswick Thompson. He is the son of the Archibald Thompson who married Nancy Langdon. This Archibald is the son of George Thompson. George is the brother of Archibald Thompson who left a diary. First, because I don't want to get in trouble with Cary, please note that she states she has not tried to prove or disprove the Andrew Thompson - Harriett Simpkins line that is in the Elder John Lawrence book by Ora Belle McCollom. This record has Andrew b. 1801. I did not catch the error, so will try and get the facts Vicki and others have collected and post in an effort to correct this mistake. > No one seems to believe me on this. Would someone please check out > Montgomery Co. VA Deed Book K, page 565 for the deed between Andrew Thompson and Harriet, his wife and William Akers. This deed clearly states that > Andrew is a rightful legatee in lands belonging to the estate of his father, > Archibald Thompson, decd. The transcript of the deed Vicki references is as follows: "I found a Montgomery Co. VA Deed stating "This indenture made this 4th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty, between Andrew Thompson and Harriet his wife of Montgomery County and state of Virginia of the one part and William Akers of said county and state of the other part, witnessed, that whereas the said Andrew Thompson having become the rightful owner of these ??????? claims to the lands heretofore belonging to the estate of his father Archabald Thompson, dec'd ........... ." The land he was selling was on Mill Creek, a fork of Meadow Creek, waters of Little River. Neighbors were Michael Peterman, Daniel Peterman, James Akers and others. Apparently, Andrew is the son of Archibald who married Nancy Langdon 22 Sept.1795 in Montgomery Co. VA. Archabald died before Nov. 1809 when his estate was appraised. I also have a Cynthia Thompson listed as his daughter. She married Allen Crandall 11 Oct. 1824. Cynthia was listed as the dau. of Archibald Thompson, decd. on the marriage record." Based on a research paper by Akers-Thompson researchers in Southwest Virginia, Elswick Thompson, b. 1764, and Patty Akers, b. 1766, had twelve children. The Clan Thompson spent many months attempting to document the children not recorded in the Archibald Thompson Diary (Lewis, Blackburn, Henry and Harmon's births are recorded in the diary); Elizabeth, Mary, Archibald, Claiborne and Joshua were proved by marriage records and deeds. Three children listed, William, Elisha and Andrew, were problematic but subsequent research has linked William as a son, and if there were an Andrew, he isn't the one who married Harriett Simpkins. To my knowledge, there has been no tie for Elisha to Elswick and Patty. I don't know what documentation McCollom has to tie Andrew Thompson to Elswick Thompson and Patty Akers. If anyone has the book, I would appreciate a check to see if there's a source cited. > In a message dated 6/29/00 11:06:50 AM, [email protected] writes: Cary Lynn Hall, a Thompson-Simpkins researcher has sent the following in response to Suzie's post of June 20: (Note: Elswick Thompson, b. 1764, was s/o Archibald Thompson and Mary Elswick; Patty Akers was d/o Blackburn Akers and Unknown Blackburn. 1. [VAMONTGO] Greenville SC, Montgomery Co VA, Migration Information and Asa Hall
    2. Rena, I noticed that you are searching Asa Hall and thought that this might assists someone who works the Floyd Co and Montgomery Co VA. In the Walker County Alabama Census for 1850: Asa Hall was age 59 (date of birth would be 1791) born in VA farmer and $100.00 (Family # 66) He did land in Walker County Alabama on 12/1/59 which was 79.92 acres Document # 28412. This land was in Range 9W, Township 14S Section 4 E1/2SW1/4 Accession Number was AL3870___.481 Some neighbors were Charles Lockhart, John M. Cunningham, & Robert Henden. Sarah Jane Hall Howtz Johnson is a relative of mine and connects with the Hal ls, Hartleys, McHaffie and Ballengers from Montgomery County area. Based upon my current research, these families also lived in Greenville, SC area. I had made a determination that my Ballengers were very much in the Montgomey County and Floyd County areas during and after the Revolutionary War and also in the Greenville SC Area. Relatives were also involved with George Rogers Clark in taking the western lands during this time frame. My John Ballenger and Jane McHaffie married in Montgomery Co VA in 1803. He was called Ned Ballenger. His father is believed to be John Ballenger borned 1759 in Culpepper Co Virginia who was a Revolutionary Soldier. He came to St Clair County Alabama from Greenville SC. Additional information may be supplied to anyone interested. Here is the article which is in the "Story of Coal and Iron in Alabama about 1910 by Ethel Armes:" "According to Powell's "History of Blount County," a couple of frontiersmen, one John Jones and his brother-in-law Caleb Friley, rode down out of Madison County about 1813 and took up home sites in the valley at the base of the long hill of red dye rock so treasured by the Indians" then the footnote contains the following: Miss Duffee writes in "Pioneer Days, " Birmingham Age-Herald, August 15, 1909: "From all I can learn it is my belief that John Jones came from Greenville district, South Carolina. In a letter received from Dr. Andrew Jones of Amity, Clark County Arkansas, and dated December 18, 1886, in reference to my sketches of the valley, then being published in the Birmingham Age, he says: "As my ancestors were the settlers of that valley, and gave it its name, of course it would be interesting to me. The stories of my father and grandfather are yet fresh in my memory about the stirring times in the settlement there. John Jones and Mr. Roupe settle there in 1816. This John Jones was a cousin to my grandfather and wore the unenviable name of "Devil John" to distinguish him from the many others of the same name, and because of his wild habits. My grandfather went there in 1817 and lived there six years, some Indians being there at the time. Somme years after his settlement he was followed by his brother, Jolly Jones, who settled near Tuskaloosa and lived and died there. Soon after others came in and settled, Mr. Friley, General Woodward, the Hanbys, Mark Goodin, the Mitchells, McDuffs, McElroys, and Mr. Durrah,__all the above having come and settled there prior to the year 1825, at which time he left Alabama and went to West Tennessee, and to his old occupation of cane-breaking for others. I remember to have heard him say that he left Greenville district, South Carolina, in the year 1799, and headed a caravan of movers to the southern district of Kentucky and stayed there until 1815, then went to Hickman County, Tennessee, thence in 1817 to Jefferson County. About the time he went to the valley John Jones had a fight with Mr. Roupe which resulted in the favor of Jones, and Mr. Roupe sold out and went in the next valley below and settled, and that took the name of Roupe's Valley. I am glad to hear of "that garden spot of creation," as my grandfather was wont to call it. I may add that I was born in Hardiman County Tennessee, in 1827, and in 1835 went with the old pioneer to Pontotoc County, Mississippi, where he died at the age of 64." Prior to locating this article, I had already made connection with Culpepper Co Virginia, Greenville South Carolina, Montgomery & Floyd County VA, Several Counties in Kentucky, Hickman Co Tennessee, Madison County Alabama, St Clair County Ala, then to Hardiman County Tennessee, and Pontotoc County Mississippi for the same time frame. Births for children of John P. Ballinger and Hulda Whitton were in Alabama, then Hardiman County and then Pontotoc County Mississippi before coming back to Walker County Alabama about 1838. If Asa Hall connects please let me know, I do have additional information.
