Hi, I was poking around in the Montgomery County Corthouse last Christmas and I saw a very ragged book. Inside a handsown cover were handwritten tax lists from very early on. It seems to me they were from sometime in the 1770's till the 1790's. Some of the sheets were large and some small. Some were more worn than others. These were all wrangled together into a cover about 8x14 inches. They were house-to-house lists and the assessor's names were written on the pages. Maybe this will help. Diana, Do you see any Ramsey names on your early map. I am seeking information on Josiah Ramsey or Thomas Ramsey in the Max Meadows area which would later become Wythe County. This may have been on Reed Creek or Boiling Springs. Regards, Rose
Hi Paul, I don't have a complete list but I do have some info...I would LOVE to have a complete list; so, if you get one, please, let me know! I am a direct descendant of so many of these people, but not really direct from the names you listed. I have studied this migration and always seeking to learn more about it. Could we have some interaction about this? Please, include me in your research. I have a copy of an old Montgomery Co., map; in which, shows most of the very earliest homesteads. I show Robert Gresham as living across "Mountain Road" beyond Tom's Creek. It says that he settled in 1775. Michael Price is located, not, on Tom's Creek but Price's Mountain, at (Thomas Stroubles Creek...Coal from the mine on Price Mountain was used by the Merrimac Ironclad. Michael Price, II settled nearer to Tom's Crk., near the area of Price's Fork, in 1786. Peter Harless settled in an area south of Lick Creek off of Tom's Crk., in 1765...near, or at "Sunnyside". Adam Harman, 500 acres in 1752--around an area, or place, "Whitethorne", had the neighbors of John Harrison, Abraham Brown, Israel Lorton--he settled in 1745, near "Fishing Run" branch off of Tom's Crk. Northwest of them were Richard McCoy, 400 acres in 1783; Jacob Shell in 1794, at "Long Shop"( his property aligned with Philip Harless'; and, was near the New River. John Philip Keister, 1799-just s.w. of Michael Price's...also aligned withPhilip Harless', Jacob Shell, and Israel Lorton. I will give you the homesteaders around Tom's Creek--(where I was exploring last year!) Many of these are my ancestors. Peter Olinger, *James Bane 1763; *Michael Kinzer, 1802 ( I don't think this is the correct date that he settled in the co., as one of my Kinzer's lived at "The Glades" area ca. 1742. And was one of the settlers living in the same settlement of the Draper's and Col. James Patton, who was killed by the Shawnee, 30 July, 1755, 21 days after Braddock's defeat.); *Joseph McDonald mill, 1763; *Michael Surface, 1794 at "Smithfield" area; Christopher Ribble, 1774; John Stockdell on Brush Mtn. Hello List, Can someone tell me what tax lists exist for 1773-1776 for Both Fincastle and Montgomery Co. And where they might be found. I am particularly interested in Personal Property Tax lists that would list someone that is not a landholder or listed as a tithable of a landowner. I am looking to verify that man and his family lived near Stroubles and Toms Creeks in 1775, they may have just arrived as a young man and his new family and may have went back north at the onset of Rev War?? Thanks Paul

A cousin sent me the following URL, which is the diary of Josephus Newton Davis. www.ls.net/~newriver/misc/jndavis.htm The diary contains so many references to so many families, regions, religion and so forth that I cannot cite specifics, and thus will cross post this message hoping some descendants will find a reference to family. I can, however, identify some folk that connect to my family line, which is why my cousin sent me the link: The Jacob Lorton in this piece is the stepfather of Mary Elswick, Archibald Thompson's wife. He married Lydia Unknown Elswick after the death of her first husband, John Elswick, II. Davis says this about their son, Israel, b. 1749 " . . . But Israel Lorton who was the captain of the Company with which my grandfather enlisted on his return from the war pretending to settle the business for my grandmother got hold of the titles he had for a most splendid tract of land on Meadow Creek Montgomery County, Virginia. " Two other references that I can connect to my Thompson line are Moses Scaggs and an Archibald Whitt. Garrett Davis, raised by Moses Scaggs, is said to be his only heir; if this is the Moses Skaggs, brother to Longhunters and other Skaggs siblings, then he was not around when Moses died, or at least he's not mentioned in the Moses Skaggs Estate Suit in Green Co., Ky. But these are only small references in this vast history of a remarkable man.
Can someone tell me when Mongtomery was first founded? It will be a few days before I can get to the library to look it up. I did not find a page of history on Gen Web. If there is one would someone point me to it too. :-( Thanks J. Ray Young

Looking for parents of Daniel and Mary Noffsinger (Notsinger, Naufsinger) Spangler. After Daniel died in 1787 in Franklin County, VA Mary moved in 1792 to the Pine Creek Area of Floyd County (which was Montgomery County at that time) when her son Daniel, Jr. purchased the Spangler Mill. Several sources show that Daniel Spanglers parents were Hans Jacob and Elizabeth Stophell Spengler. I have not been able to validate this with original documentation. I believe Daniels father name was Jacob. This is from verbal family tradition. I never heard anyone mention Daniels mother name. Hans Jacob Spenglers will seems to disprove that he and Elizabeth were Daniels parents. Hans Jacobs will reads as follows: February the 5th Anno Domini 1756 Jacob Spengler of Allsace Township and County of Berks hath made his last Will and faith in the Presence of the subscribing Wittness, as followeth--That his only son George Christopher Spengler who helped ........ (portion missing)..... be it what nomination it will ...... and Personal. Except only that the Heir shall give unto his Mother Elisabeth Spengler for her suport during her Life Yearly (in case she does not dwell with him) 14 Bushels of Wheat, 50 Pounds of Pork, 20 of Beef, 40 shillings in currancy and the .... of cows but he shall keep said cows at his own charge. The Things above said George Christian Spengler shall give unto his Mother Elisabeth Spengler for her maintenance and further that my son shall give one cow and calf unto my Deceased Daughters Child Elizabeth Wise (?) by name and that wqhen she is married. which I myself signed by my own hand before Witness. Adam Reiffel Jacob Spengler D B Teobaltbaum his X mark 1756 February 18. Then Christopher Wilman of Reading appeared by solomn Oath did declare the above writing to be a faithful translation (by him made according to his ability) of an original Writing in German exhibited to me and by me delivered to him to translate purporting to be the last will of Jacob Spengler. Christopher Witman ***** I have have seen hand written notations on some old papers that Daniel and John Spangler came to what is now Floyd Co., VA from York County, PA. I suspect they were refering to Daniel and Mary's sons Daniel and John but am not sure. I have a document which was prepared for the 1916 Spangler reunion at the Pine Creek Church which says Daniel and Mary came from Germany. (Also have a good photo made at the reunion.) Any information on Daniel, Sr. or Mary Noffsinger Spangler's parents and descendants would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jack Spangler Ellicott City, MD

Bateman III Mr. Bateman, I sent for the French and Indian War record for Archibald Thompson in 1998 and received a copy of the Land Office Warrant for Archibald's service. The land grant he got for this service was in Montgomery Co., and recorded in 1793; the image of the grant is available through the Library of Virginia Electronic web site. I will paste all information I got from the LOV below, and in a separate post, give selected entries from Brockstruck's "Virginia Colonial Soldiers," which was enclosed with the copy I received. The excerpt did not include Sussex, so you could check the Bockstuck book to see if your Peter Solomon is listed. As you have the Peter Soloman's French-Indian War service record, you could write the Library to see if they can find a record in their French and Indian War Bounty Warrants Reels. Here's the information I sent to LOV when requesting the copy of Archibald's service record: ARCHIBALD THOMPSON DIARY Transcript by Lula Hankins Hunter <http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald/> Page 102 December ye 1st 1759 We was Discharged out of the Second Battallion of the Virginia Ridgement By an Act of Asembly From under the Comd of *Col pechua and Capt Trockmorton and Lieut Richardson . *Per research by Barbara Marsh, "on 14 Sept 1758, the House of Burgesses passed an act for the defense of the Virginia frontier. The Virginia regulars, in 1758, were divided into two regiments; the First Regiment under Col. George Washington, and the Second under Col. William Byrd. Archibald Thompson, as entered in his DIARY, was a member of the Second Regiment, serving under Col. William Peachy, Col. of the Frontier Battalion, and Capt. Gabriel Throckmorton. He was twenty two years old and unmarried. The Regiment was discharged by an Act of Assembly on the 1 Dec 1759, which he noted in his DIARY. . .
