    3. Hi all, Several people have asked me about ordering these maps so I'll tell you what I know. It was made by the Roanoke County Historical Society. It's great, cool, etc. I bought mine at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg, VA. at the information desk. I spoke to Mrs. Christman who was so nice. She knows a bit about Montgomery Co. since her people have lived there for a few centuries. I think it was six or seven bucks and I would have paid twenty. It is about 18x22 inches and a must have. I suppose you could write the Roanoke Historical Society and I'm sure that there address would be listed at the Rootsweb Roanoke County site. BTW -- the Virginia Room at the Roanoke Public Library is one of the best Genealogical research rooms I've been in (other than the big state and University sites). Maps are cool -- Ed [email protected] wrote: > Any chance the maps could be purchased and mailed?? > If so how much should I send and to whom. > Thanks for the info. > Charles Severs > Louisville, Ky

    2. Berry Spradley
    3. I started useing genealogy software many years ago. I choose Brother's Keeper software at random. It served me well for 12+ years. Once or twice I tested another program briefly but could see no reason to change. About 7-8 months ago I downloaded the PERSONAL ANCESTOR FILE (PAF) program (free!) on the Later Day Saints web page to give it a try. copied (ged) my file data to it and then made double entries to both PAF and Brother's Keeper for three months to keep from losing any of my info in my test. PAF if is a SUPER program. It is a bit complex to understand at first (because it has so many features) but it is head 'n sholders above anything I have seen before. If you take some time to understand it it has MANY rich features...usually available with only one or two clicks. Wonderful report printing abilities, etc. This is a completely free program that would cost many dollars if it were not offered by the Church. This is a completely personal opinion that I am sending because I think that this program would help many genealogists AND IT"S FREE!!! *********************************** Hunting for SPRADLEY and KETCHUM families. 3. Hi, I just want to remind or tell folks that Montgomery County records from the 1740's until 1776 are located in the Augusta County archives. Chalkley's Chronicles of Scotch Irish Settlement is a wonderful source of abstracts from the Augusta Court records and I have found much on the settlement of the north and south forks of the Roanoke River and the New River. For those of you not native to the area, the Indian Road came down the Catawba valley (which is a watershed of the upper James River) and over onto the drainage of the Roanoke. The road followed up and over the Allegheny ridge and onto waters of the New River at Drapers Meadows and the Glades. This is modern-day Blacksburg. Stroubles Creek runs on the eastern side of Blacksburg and down to the New River near Ingles Crossing (later Ferry). Toms (Jones) Creek runs down the west side of town and along Brush Mountain (used to be Craigs Creek Mountain) and into the New to the north of the Horseshoe (a huge hairpin in the New River). The Augusta Court appointed the early settlers to build roads from one place to another and you can learn a lot by studying the before mentioned map of the county. Brown. there is a photo of him, he was 73, "senior member of the mercantile firm of Brown Brothers. Unfortunately the date of the newspaper is not included. As one of the "honorary pallbearers" was my grandfather, I can be absolutely sure this man died before 1944. "Active pallbearers" were all nephews named Brown or Bell. 3. Diana, Where did you locate your map? I also have family that was located in Montgomery Co., VA. By chance was there any MacMahan or any varations of the name, McNulty, Jones and Henry's. It's so difficult to locate early records and you give hope! Thanks Pat -----Original Message----- From: Diana Kinzer Heath <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, July 27, 2000 5:08 PM Subject: Re: [VAMONTGO] 1773-1777 Tax lists >Hi Paul, >I don't have a complete list but I do have some info...I would LOVE to have >a complete list; so, if you get one, please, let me know! > >I am a direct descendant of so many of these people, but not really direct >from the names you listed. 3. If that tax list Ed found in the Mongtomery Courthouse has not been transcribed (I'm guessing it has not been photocopied), someone living in Montgomery Co area call the Regent of a local DAR chapter and inform her of this find. DAR is always looking for original records to transcribe and make available to the public. I'm guessing one of more members of the chapter will happily and willingly transcribe the lists. Be sure to ask that a copy of the list be kept locally in one or more places and also a copy sent to the Salt Lake Library. They will send the list to NSDAR in Washington and made available there to the public. Barb
