Giles Thomas (1763-1842) is buried in Westview Cemetary in Blacksburg near his son William Thomas (1796-1863). I am interested in finding out more details about the children of Giles' son Charles Thomas (1790-1869) who also lived in Montgomery County. Glad to share what I have which is substantial.

I am looking for theWilliam HOWARD/EmmaWINFREY family bible. I feel it holds clues to the final resting place of some of my ancestors. I am especially looking for the grave site of Harriet Jewell and her husband Andrew Howard. Andrew is the father of William .
I just wanted to take this time to apologize to everyone for how far behind I have fallen with the Archives. This has been one heck of a summer :) But it's been fun, just extremely busy. I have updated the WV counties with files recieved during July, so those are already online for you to see. I am now working on the Virginia Counties. The first update I do will be for files rcvd in July, so if you've sent a file in August, it won't be on this update. I need to finish one month before I begin on another. My youngest just started kindergarten and I haven't started back to work yet, so next week I plan to spend getting everything all caught up. Assuming nothing goes wrong, I should have time to get it all done. Thank you all for your patience with me :) Also, I have inherited three new counties in Virginia and will begin working on those web pages after I have finished my work on the counties I have pending files for. Those counties are Goochland, Henrico, and Hanover. So be thinking of anything that you'd like to submit for those counties and soon I'll be posting new files there as well. Thanks again for all of you who have supported me and the archives. I hope to be more prompt in the future :) Jeannie ************* Now Available: "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay, Jamestown Immigrant and son of Sir John Clay of Wales" Also available: "The Descendants of James Bailey & Lucy Simms" For more info: http://www.trellis.net/users/madamx

Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >Can anyone help me place the location of the Thompson Graveyard as described in the following message? A California cousin visited the Montgomery Co., Va., area in April, looking for the site of Archibald Thompson's homesteads in the mid-1700s. We are descendants of Archibald, b. 1736, and Mary Elswick, b. 1741, who lived at various locations in Montgomery Co. until their emigration to Kentucky in 1797. (See his diary, index and transcript by Lula Hankins Hunter at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald/ ) The Thompson's in this cemetery may be from another Thompson family line; however, many descendants of Archibald's parents, John Thompson and Mary Unknown, stayed in Montgomery and neighboring counties, and the family cemetery described by my cousin could be on the location of some of the ancestral lands of the earliest Virginia Thompsons. >"One day we did drive to Christiansburg and tried to go by Tom's directions to the Thompson gravesite. We could not find it where he said it was. He said it was on Indian Valley Rd. just to the right of the river near the bridge. We couldn't find any sign of it there. We went to a nearby farm house and asked a lady who lived there, Mrs. Cox, if she knew where it might be. She said the last Thompson (Cynthia) died about 1953 or 1954 and was buried in the graveyard near the old Thompson house, which was still standing the last she knew. That had been shortly after the death of Cynthia. She told us where to go and so we decided to try to find it. We ended up driving just over the river and down a lane to the left of the bridge. We drove about a hundred yards and parked the car at a gate which blocked the lane. . . We searched many little lanes and finally found the right one and headed up the hill. Near the top of the hill we found an old log cabin that had had some changes made to it over the years (like a tin roof and a loft inside). From there we walked to the top of the hill and found a small graveyard. The stones were of field stone and slate and only three were somewhat readable with the printing scratched on them. There were no complete names just initials and years. We estimate there may have been fifteen to eighteen graves. What we thought may have been more graves, may have been footstones on some of the graves. . . If it is part of our family, it would be awesome. The feeling I felt is hard to express but it was like finding a part of me and mine. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be not a part of our family." We have placed Mary Elswick's family at Draper's Meadows around 1750. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse <
Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >Follows are records Tom Thompson found at the Montgomery Co., Va., courthouse. I can't reconcile the death of Nancy Thompson in 1863, d/o Andrew and Hariett Thompson, with the Andrew Thompson whose heirs were sued in 1858. In the suit there is a Nancy wife of John Surface, "late" Nancy Thompson. So the Nancy who died in 1863 wasn't even dead then. I would also very much like to get in touch with someone who may have information about the Joseph Thompson who died in 1855 in Kentucky. George Thompson, b. 1742, and Elisabeth Unknown, had a son, Joseph, b. 1778. It could be Joseph went to Kentucky with his uncle, Archibald Thompson, or other relatives, and died there. "1855 Chancery Court Case # 373. Andrew Thompson qualified as administrator of the estate of Joseph Thompson who died c. 1855 in Kentucky. Lists heirs of Joseph Thompson. Case filed March 1870. Case filed against Stephen Childress as Adm of Andrews estate. I think Stephen Childress was also involved with William Thompson's estate. Andrew may have been brother to Joseph. 1858 Chancery Court Case #225 March 1858. Suit brought by Charelton family against Andrew Thompson heirs. Heirs noted to be Samuel A. Stone, Ellen Thompson, John Francis and Sarah his wife, formerly Sarah Thompson, John ?Ssurface and Nancy his wife, late Nancy Thompson, Charles Thompson, Mary Thompson, John Thompson, Harriett E. Thompson the last four infants under 21 years of age and Hariett Thompson. Two names I cannot read. Note; No Joseph noted under heirs of Andrew. 1863 MontCo Death Register Nancy Thompson d/o Andrew and Hariett Thompson d. Nov 10, 1863, typhoid fever. At some time before October 1787, in Montgomery Co. VA, Blackburn Akers, Sr. and John Bishop signed a note for 12 lb. 11 shillings to John Plank, witnesses Marthy Akers and Nancy Akers. Apparently the note was not satisfied when due and Mr. Plank took them to court. On 1787 October 1787, possbily as a result of the suit, Montgomery County Sheriff Walter Crockett was ordered to hold AKERS and BISHOP. My question is: Who was the witness Nancy Akers? Marthy was a daughter of Blackburn, Sr. but there are no daughters, granddaughters or daughters-in-law named Nancy at that time, that I'm aware of. Nancy Altizer Akers came much later. In 1786 Blackburn, Sr. had married Susannah Skaggs but considering the running time on the note (which I do not know but some of these suits went on for five years or more), the preparations and suit it seems possible that Nancy is the name of Blackburn, Sr.'s first wife, the presumptive daughter of John Blackburn. I'd appreciate any information on this, particularly dates. Best wishes, Earl B. Akers, Sr. Puyallup, WA The Banyan Tree
I'm interested in any information relating to Carrie L Whitt and Permelia A. Whitt. Their parents were Joseph B. and Elvira S. Whitt. >From 1900 Pulaski Co., VA census; Joseph and Elvira S. are listed with children: Edna S. (b. 1876), George C. (b. 1879), Mary B. (b. 1881), Carrie L. (b. May 1882), and Permelia A (b. Dec. 1883). My g-grandmother Mildred Lelia Whitt falls into this family. She had married in 1899 and already moved to Giles Co., VA. Does anyone have access or volunteer for a lookup for a marriage record in Pulaski Co?? They are not in the Montgomery Co. Courthouse. Would be interested in any available info pertaining to Whitt's in these areas and counties. Thanks, Doug Lovell [email protected]
