    1. [VAMONTGO] Jacob Croy m1832 Eliza Bailey>?? Jacob Croy & Sarah Frye
    2. Robert Foran
    3. Would be grateful to learn the of the parents of the Jacob Croy b1803 Montgomery who married Eliza Bailey 16 August 1832. I noticed from the Montgomery 1850 census that he lived next door to Adam Croy b 1770. I wonder if this Adam could be his uncle. Adam Croy had a son, Jacob David Croy, Jr who married Sarah Frye in 1823. Could this Jacob David Croy have been previously married to Catherine Sour and could they be the parents of the Jacob Croy b1803? The rest of the line I'm researching is below. Thanks. 1. [VAMONTGO] Birth Date of William Severs of Montgomery Co l793
    2. Wm Severs married in Montgomery Co VA in l793. I am attempting to prove (or disprove) he was a Hessian born 9 Feb l751 but have been unable to find the birth date on Wm Severs. He was born in Germany under the "new calender" the English changed to in l752 and that has caused confusion. Does Anyone have any suggestions that might lead to a birth date that he might have submitted in the l793 era of Montgomery Co? Charles Severs Louisville, Kentucky

    2. my Hessian Johannes Wilhelm Siebert deserted in Savanna Georgia in July l782 and seems to have married Catherine Peck in l793 in Montgomery County VA. I am interested in the time frame l782-l793 and what he might have done in that time. An Oath or indenture comes to mind. He was a blacksmith and I have been unable to find his military trade and wondered if an indenture may have taught that trade, etc. Any suggestions as to that information appreciated Charles Severs Louisville, Ky

    1. [VAMONTGO] Replies about Whitt log cabin
    2. aidan0131
    3. Thanks to everyone for your info and contacts for info regarding the Whitt log cabin that was located on the Radford University till the 1950's. Following info came from James Gilson, archivist at the Radford University. The following information comes from an article in the March 27, 1953 edition of the Grapurchat school newspaper: "Log House, Formerly Used as Campus Museum, Being Moved; Mr. Gilbert Preserves Historical Landmark" The log house, locally known as the Whitt House, has been razed from the campus of Radford College and will be reconstructed near Claytor Lake. The old house has been a landmark on the campus since 1932, when it was moved from Whitt's Mill on Meadow Creek in Montgomery Co. The article goes on to quote a letter written by John Preston McConnell to a friend in 1932. According to McConnell, "It is claimed that the house was built in 1775. .... Shortly after the removal of the house to the college campus, Mr. E.B. Lucas, a resident of the Meadow Creek community, wrote a sketch about the building. He said in part that the house which had been moved from Meadow Creek was formerly the property of the Roops. 'It belonged,' he said, 'to the Brothers Captain Jacob and Ruben Roop of Montgomery County militia. It was erected on a specially selected site which they named Angel's Rest because from this point a complete circle of the rainbow would sometimes be visible." "The remaining logs and chimneys have been taken over by Mr. William E. Gilbert, who is removing them to his property on Claytor Lake. There it is proposed to use the remaining logs which have not been affected by the termites in the construction of two wings to a log house. It is Mr. Gilbert's intent that this house hall be made available for use to college students as a camp site on the lake and sill thus perpetuate its association with the memeory of Mr. Whitt and his forebears and the project of Dr. McConnell to preserve for posterity those things which were significant of the culture from which they rose." Understanding that one of the houses which used logs from the Whitt cabin burned down. Can anyone now tell me where the Whitt Mill was located in Meadow Creek community?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks to all for your replies and connections. Best Regards, Doug Lovell [email protected]

    2. Hi, I have extensive research on the RIDERs of Wythe county. I believe some missing pieces are probably in Montgomery. Does anyone out there have any in their trees? I am also interested in any Riders who appear in census 1800 forward to 1880. Also looking for HOOFNAGLE. Mary Hoofnagle married William Rider perhaps in Pennsylvania before settling in Wythe. William disappears after 1840 from Wythe. No grave or death record has been found there. Any help appeciated. I will share whatever I have to offer. Thanks, Lisa

    3. List members, I need some history that refers to a log cabin that in the late 1930's was donated to Radford University as used as a museum piece on its campus donation by Dr. Jeremy Pate Whitt. Later, with the development of the campus was sold and moved as a private dwelling?? Does anyone have access to the Radford University Archives or perhaps have been an alumni during the time period of 1930-1950?? Seeking the original location of this cabin as it may link to Rev. Richard Whitt and Susannah Skaggs. From postings on GenForum; a graveyard known as "Dunkards Cemetery" has been mentioned. Can anyone provide me with an exact location?? Any help or clues will be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Doug Lovell [email protected]

    1. [VAMONTGO] Lost Grannies/Lewis,Perdue,Gross,Perriagn, Knipp, & ?
    2. Here is a list of GGG- Grandmothers I have nothing on except a name. What a shame, our granny's dissappear with no history except their married name and a list of children. I would like to know these Granny's families too. Can anyone help, or does anyone connect with these Grandmothers? 1. Charity Gross - born abt. 1790 in Pa. married John Perrigan. ( their children end up in Washington County,Va.) Who was Charity's parents, and some Gross family history would be nice. I hate that Charity is just a name, no born, no died, nothing about her. 2. Sarah ? - Poor Sarah does not even have a last name! I find her in Washington County census up until about 1880 at age 92 living with daughter, Matilda and son in law, John Jackson. No death record, they just dissappear, ( all of them). Sarah was married to Levi Canter. Sarah needs a maiden name. She was somebody before she married Levi and had his children! 3. Rebecca James - married Levi Canter in 1815 Scott County,Va. Is Rebecca my Sarah or a different wife? Who was Rebecca's parents? Where was she born and where did she die? 4. Rachel Lewis - born 1785, married in Wythe County,Va. March 10,1811 to Daniel Whittaker. What about her Lewis family? Will I ever know? 5. Obediance or Abediance ( Biddie) Perdue married Joseph Whittaker abt, 1774, but where? Who was the Perdue family she come from? Their older children found in Old Mt. Airy, but can't find a marriage record for them. 6. Camilla Adkins - 2nd wife of Joseph Whittaker, no other info. 7. Barbara Knipp - married Michael Brown in Wythe County, Va., she was born in 1779 and married in Nov. 1797. She probably belongs in Verner Knipp family, but where? 8. Elizabeth Perrigan who married William Canter, We believe she is the daughter of John Perrigan and Charity Gross, but not 100%. There seems to be a Booher connection too, but can't proove it. At least we know her place of rest. Anyone with resources who is kind enough to find more on these grannies, please help me. Any one who may have a kinship please write. Many thanks. Connie in Va.

    1. [VAMONTGO] re: Mary Bowman, Mary Bowman
    2. Hello, researchers, I've nailed down a few things about Mary Bowman, and the family of Rev. Christian Bowman, Sr.. Just wanted to add a couple of details. I had it that Hatcher King gave "Floyd Co." for Mary Bowman's birthplace, although she was born before the county was formed in 1831. I figured that meant Montgomery County. Jack Spangler and Debby Bliss both reminded me that Dr. Amos Wood reported Christian Bowman's (pre-1838) family as being in Roanoke Co. - an error, as that county was formed from part of Botetourt Co. in 1838 (noted by Rena Worthen). According to Debby Bliss, Christian Bowman is listed in the census index in Botetourt Co in 1830 (p. 260). He is listed in Floyd Co. in 1840 (p. 172). Essentially, the bread crumbs say that Rev. Christian Bowman Sr. was born in Franklin County, and his children were born in Botetourt Co. They moved to Floyd County before 1840. The source for the idea that Mary Bowman was born in 1822 is probably a headstone, which I believe is in error, and ca 1826 is correct. - Steve Deal

    1. [VAMONTGO] SANDERS/AKERS query
    2. glenn sanders
    3. Hi, It's been a while since I posted this query, so I thought I'd try again: I'm looking for the family of my 3g Grandfather, named Anthony SANDERS/SAUNDERS, who m. Lovicy AKERS in Montgomery County in 1819. Anthony was born in 1796, location unknown. He enlisted in the War of 1812, departing in 1814 from Christiansburg and returning to Christiansburg after the war. After marriage, Anthony and Lovicy moved to Clark Co. Ohio, where they had 6 children. In 1831 they moved to Henry Co. Indiana, where they had six more children. Anthony died there in 1851. Anthony and Lovicy's marriage certificate was signed by a Francis SAUNDERS. I believe that this was not Anthony's father, since all data points to the idea that Francis was just a few years older than Anthony. In the 1880 census, some of Anthony's children stated he was born in VA; some others said NC. The 1850 census, when he was still alive, stated PA. Lovicy was the daughter of Austin AKERS (of the well known AKERS family) and Rhoda THOMPSON. Some of the research I have done to date: looked in the LDS archives for Montgomery Co; had a local person search the Montgomery County courthouse; and received his militia war records and pension data. None of this indicated anything about his past before enlisting in the War of 1812. Does anybody have anything on a SANDERS family containing the names Anthony and/or Francis? I'd like to know who Anthony's parents and siblings are. Many of his descendants have been looking for many years, but so far to no avail. Help greatly appreciated! Thanks, Glenn Sanders
