    3. Note: The Commonwealth of Va. requires a court order to move a grave.. If the person or company who wants to remove the grave does not know a family member to contact, sometimes they will place a notice in a local paper asking for relatives.. so check court records and newspapers in the area. Recently a local man wanted to move some graves to make room for a subdivision.. He placed a notice in the paper asking if anyone knew who a woman who was buried there... The woman was my step gggrandmother who had been buried beside her first husband.. I believe she was an ancestor, ggrandmother etc., of the person wishing to move the grave.. I guess he moved her and did not know this.. but maybe he did some research and found out... G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va..

    1. [VAMONTGO] MURDOCK Cemetery, removal and re-interment at Radford, 1988
    2. Bruce Murduck
    3. Good morning folks, Three monuments stand in the Radford Cemetery, one of which reads "On this site are buried members of the Murdock Family. They were placed here following removal from the family cemetery in Montgomery Co. Virginia, on August 30, 1988" Now the questions start! Does anyone here... - know who was buried in the original cemetery site? - know where the original cemetery site was? - have any knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the removal and re-burial? - know if a newspaper account of the removal was published, or know how might we check for something? - know if County approval would have been necessary to move the remains? If so, how might we go about obtaining records filed with and by the County? The two other stones memorialize John Audrey Murdock, 1912 - 1979; and Mossie L. Murdock, 1915 - 1991. Does anyone recall these recent residents of Radford? We're eager to find out who might have been buried in the original Murdock Cemetery. So far we know of only one person who was buried there (from a Death Certificate) - John Brown. Speculation is that Elijah Murdock and his wife Polly [nee Dallis] and some of their descendants were possibly buried there. Elijah arrived in Montgomery County in the mid to late 1830's, and married Louisa Brown after Polly died. All help greatly appreciated. 2. Angela Griffin
    3. Hello: I am looking for a death certificate for Amanda Taliaferro Saunders. She died after the 1870 census. My guess is about 10-1870. Her husband Calvin remarried by 4-29-1871. I have looked in Floyd Co. for death record but nothing. Calvin marriage certificate states that he was living in Montgomery county when he got married to the 2nd wife so I'm guessing she died there. Calvin was also listed on the 1880 census in Christiansburg District of Montgomery Co. Could some please look this up? 2. Timothy J. Barron
    3. The first edition of The Descendants of George Holland is now available. The 823 page book records 11 generations and over 10,800 descendants of George Holland from Grayson County, Virginia. It is in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, and can be found on the Hollon/Holland section of my web page. Here is a direct link with details: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tjbarro/hollon/hollon.html I consider this book to be a "work in progress," and hopefully this is the first of many future editions. Earlier this year, I put a "stake in the ground" to set a specific date for a first edition (November 15th). I received significantly more descendant updates than expected, and unfortunately, I was not able to include as much historical information on Virginia and Kentucky that I wanted to. -- \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ------- oOOo-(_)-oOOo---------------------------- Timothy J. 1. [VAMONTGO] re. Help finding early Fincastle records
    2. Hi All, I'd like to thank anyone who responded to my call for help on finding the early Fincastle records. I do realize that Fincastle was not formed until 1772, but old Litton Bible records indicated Fincastle, so I simply wanted to see if I could check through any documentation that might be available. I would also like to caution anyone doing genealogy research to be careful with info they find on WFT. This info is often faulty. I get the impression that any and all info can be put there whether it is verified or not. I would not consider any info legitimate that I could not prove through documentation or as in the case of no documentation, and as we all know, sometimes there isn't any, at least 3 other sources of verification i.e. Family Bibles, letters, etc. An example of this is that any number of history books say that one of my ancestors Solomon Litton was at the Battle of King's Mountain which took place in 1781. In fact, Solomon and his family were in British captivity in Canada from 1780-1783. (Capture of Ruddles Fort and Martin's Station, Kentucky) A letter written by Solomon Litton himself verifies this. Solomon Litton was a militiaman in the regiment from Washington Co, Virginia, where he had resided before his capture, as well as after. The Washington County Regiment fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain so it has often been incorrectly presumed that Solomon was there. My research indicates that John Richard Litton, Solomon's father, and Caleb Litton, Solomon's brother and my GGGgrandfather, did participate in this battle. I have visited Washington County Historical Society and Washington County Library in Abingdon, Virginia, as well as The King's Mountain Park and Museum in North Carolina to verifiy this info. The internet is a great tool to help you get info, but remember to make an effort to document info that you record. Regards, Caroline
