    3. The following message is from Cyndi Howell but this needs to be a reminder to us all...............Happy Hunting! Hello all - Happy new year! Each January we see a huge influx of newbies joining us online because Santa was generous and left a sparkling new computer under the tree. There are also many after-holidays sales which offer people the opportunity to purchase a snazzy new computer or modem. Many people get online for the first time and enthusiastically don their cyber-bikinis, hitting the surf with gusto. They are excited to be here and they are (much as we "oldbies" were) rightfully overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. The language here is foreign to them. The technology is newer, fancier and zippier than they may have used in the past. And the way that we all participate in our giant, online genealogical society, while being very similar to offline groups, is still a bit different than they may be prepared for. In other words, it is a brave new world to them. I would like to put out a call to each of you to show these newbies that we are a friendly, welcoming and helpful group of online genealogists. To do so we all need to pitch in and show patience, understanding and kindness. We also need to put on our teaching caps and be prepared to show them the ropes. 1. Don't make assumptions. 2. Explain things in detail, include URLs and complete instructions. 3. Verify details and addresses before you send them to people. 4. Offer to help people privately via e-mail, off of the mailing lists. 5. Be prepared to explain things more than once, in more than one way. 6. Keep in mind that we were all new at one time. 7. Keep in mind that we all learn something new every day. 8. Reach out to your fellow researchers and set a good example. There are several places online to which you can point newbies in order to help them learn about this new research venue. I have tried to make these easy to locate by setting up links on my site: Internet Stuff You Need To Know http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm Also be sure to point them to these basic starting places online: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet http://www.CyndisList.com Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet RootsWeb http://www.RootsWeb.com See the RootsWeb Help Desk: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service http://www.familysearch.org/ Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Mailing Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html Good luck and successful surfing to everyone online - both newbies and oldbies, Cyndi http://www.CyndisList.com Tami P. 1. [VAMONTGO] CORDER & SHOCKEY Famiies of Montgomery Co, VA
    2. Nancy Corder Halvorson
    3. Good Evening List Members, I am a new member. So I'd like to see if there are any members who are researching the CORDER or SHOCKEY families. I hit an enormously large and very thick brick wall with my gr-gr-grandfather Reuben CORDER who married Matilda SHOCKEY in Champaign County, OH in 1839. I found Matilda's Uncle's family (Isaac Shockey Jr.) and John Corder, s/o Benjamin who was the s/o Edward Corder living within 2-1/4 and 10 miles from each other. I cannot go any further back for my CORDER family. Both families show up in Montgomery County, VA. According to the "Shockey Family History", records seem to indicate that Matilda's grandfather Isaac left his younger children with families in Montgomery County, VA. Isaac Shockey Sr. was taxed in Harrisonburg, VA. Although his oldest dau Eve Shockey born 1769 married a John Gosham at Harrisonburg, VA in 1788, four younger siblings married in MontCo. John Shockey born 1775 married Betsy Simpson in 1802. Henry Shockey born 1779 married Mary Wiley in 1816. Mary Shockey born 1782 married Jacob Smith in 1796; and Daniel Shockey born 1785 married Sarah King in 1830. The homes they grew up in is unknown to me. Another researcher told me that Benjamin Corder appeared in Montgomery County Records as early as 1798. His records first appear in Tazewell County in 1803. He migrated by way of KY to Allen (Auglaize County) OH by 1850. A transcription of his will lists the following children and the state where they were living. "Described from said decedents mainly: John Corder, Elias Corder and Rebecca Barber residing in the County of Auglaize,OH; John Lusk and Mary his wife, and James Corder residing in the state of Missouri; Jacob Bowles and his wife, Susannah residing in the State of Ohio; William Corder, residing in the State of Virginia; John Welman residing in the State of Kentucky also Hannah Wellman, his wife, residing in the same place". >From other researchers I have learned that a William Corder first appears on the Mont Co Tax list as early as 1794, and as late as 1830. Could this be Benjamin's son, or is this Wm his brother or nephew? This William appears to be a very good candidate for Reuben Corder's father, since census records indicate that Reuben was born ca 1819 in VA. I would like to figure out where the SHOCKEYS and CORDERS lived as a way to determine the liklihood that both families knew each other in VA before living near each other in OH. Does anyone have any information on either of these families? I am just beginning my research in Montgomery County, so any information will be knew to me. Nancy Halvorson [email protected]

    3. I hope you have all been enjoying the Holidays and that each of you will have a wonderful new year. I've been absent from my duties with the Archives pages for a while and I just wanted to let you all know that I have not forgotten about them. I worked on them as hard as I could the first part of November, knowing that might be the last chance I'd get in a while, and it turned out to be true. So now my plan is to do my best to see to it that I get things caught up as soon as possible. During my trip back home over the Thanksgiving Holidays, I was able to visit some graveyards, and so have some new files to upload of my own as well. That's always exciting! My apologies to you all for the delay; as always your patience is highly appreciated. Thanks so much! Jeannie PS. For those of you who've written to me regarding my books, give me a bit more time to get back to you on those. Thank you so much for your interest and just as soon as I can get these archives straigtened out, I will be happy to answer all of your questions to the best of my ability. Thanks again, J Happy Holidays from the Watts' Family: Jeannie, Richard, Samantha, Jennifer and all our critters!!! ************* Now Available: "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay, Jamestown Immigrant and son of Sir John Clay of Wales" Also available: "The Descendants of James Bailey & Lucy Simms" For more info: http://www.trellis.net/users/madamx

    3. Montgomery County, NC, is in the central part of North Carolina. It's largest town or city is Albemarle, N.E. of Charlotte. Montgomery Co., VA, is in the Northwestern section of Virginia. It's county seat is Christiansburg. It is bordered on the west side by Radford and on the east side by Blacksburg. You may need to search the records in both of these states because one of your records could be a misprint. As you can see, these counties are nowhere near each other. 3. In personal effects from the New Albany, IN. Library I have a clue to my oldest researched Ingram. William F. Ingram b: 1733 in Montgomery, NC. His son Andrew Ingram b: 1758 in Granville, NC. joined the Rev. war from Montgomery, VA. There is an Andrew in the "Virginia Records of Taxpayers form 1782-1787", then Andrew purchased 300 acres in Hawkins Co., Tn. in 1791. The story goes on but my question is: Are Montgomery, VA and Montgomery, NC the same? I am not at all familiar with the Eastern coast of America's history and it has been too long since history in school but I do know county/state lines changed a lot in the beginning. 1. [VAMONTGO] John G BARTLETT of Henry Co, VA and Garner BARTLETT of Montgomery Co, VA
    2. Jim Bartlett
    3. I just posted this on the BARTLETT GenForum, and am looking for feedback on the analysis and conclusions. John G(?Gardner) BARTLETT was early settler of Henry Co, VA; in RevWar; died at 83 in Henry Co, VA. This is per history book of Warren Co, IN where sons John H and Thomas lived. No one has ever found a record of John G BARTLETT in Henry Co or the RevWar or has any dates for him other than he died at 83. His ch are reported: William 1784; John H 1785; Betsy 1787; Martha 1789; Thomas 1790. We've concluded that John was in Botetourt Co 1810 census (alone); he m 1813 Botetourt Co, VA Hester HINKLE; was in Montgomery Co 1820 census with 3 ch [10001-2001]; and then went to Warren Co, IN. Thomas m 1816 Franklin Co, VA Sabrina HILL (who was b 1792 Frederick Co, VA) and is probably in Montgomery Co 1820 census with 3 ch [30001-0011]; and then went to Warren Co, IN. There appear to be no VA records for William, Betsy or Martha. It is strange to me that we have lots of other BARTLETT records in Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry and Patrick Co, VA in the pre- and post-RevWar time frame; but none for John G or his ch. Why is John H in Botetourt/Montgomery Co area? Let's look at Garner BARTLETT. He was in Loudoun Co VA 1765; moved to Berkeley Co by 1787; then to Botetourt Co by 1795; and finally in Montgomery Co 1810 census; and his will there in 1811, which named his ch: William, Reuben, John, Thomas, Lydia TOWNSLEY, and 3 not named. William m 1800 Frederick Co, VA Lydia POWELL; is in Berkeley Co 1810 census, Frederick Co 1820 census, Montgomery Co 1830 census, Floyd Co 1831 tax list; and his widow, Lydia, is then in Floyd 1850 and 60 census adjacent to their son, Leroy. Similarly Reuben is in Montgomery Co 1810 (near his father, Garner), 20 and 30 census; Floyd 1831 tax list and 1840 census (as widower) There appear to be no records in the area for Garner's sons Thomas and John. There are records in Montgomery Co for a Thomas and John, but they've been "tagged" for sons of John G of Henry Co... Unless someone can find ANY record (other than a statement in a history book, which history book statements have frequently proved to be inaccurate) in Henry Co, or that area, then I'm forced to conclude that the Thomas and John BARTLETT's in Montgomery Co, VA are the sons of Garner BARTLETT. It may well be that he was John Gardner BARTLETT, and the history book used the John G and was a little confused on Henry Co. By the way Garner's estimated birth was c1750 which would have made him 61 when he died. He was probably in Loudoun Co during the RevWar, but I've not found him in the DAR Patriot index, but he could have served. Garner also had a sister Betsy and one of the not named ch in his will is purported to be Betsy... I have struggled with this conclusion for some time - there just isn't enough information/families in this area of VA to support two families with William, John and Thomas BARTLETT children - Garner's Montgomery Co Will stakes a claim on them. Perhaps a careful tracking of deeds and the annual personal property tax lists in Montgomery Co 1800-1830 would help... I would very much appreciate any feedback on this analysis and conclusion. Jim Bartlett [email protected] (new) Gaithersburg, MD

    3. I need help from the MONTGOMERY list with this family. I sent this email to the BARTLETT list, but some of the info we need should be from Montgomery Co 1800 to 1831. I would be gratefull if anyone can supply any records for any of the children of Garner/Gardner BARTLETT as outlined below - I've got most of the census info - but don't know much more... Let's look at all I have on this family... see the outline below. Lydia BARTLETT (probably the widow of William) was in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 Floyd Co census near Leroy. I'm pretty confident that Garnen, Garner, Garnet, Gardner BARTLETT are all the same person - it's a relatively unusual name so it's easy to follow as he moved from Loudoun to Berkeley to Montgomery Co (did he ever live in Botetourt Co??). I'd also like to know more about his son John... Who were William's children? Thomas's children? Reuben's? They had to be getting married in the 1830's and 1840's in Floyd Co... Please let me know if you think I've put these records together incorrectly, and particularly if you have a record that I haven't listed below (I've focused mainly on census records so far, but we need others to fill in the holes.... By the way, Garner BARTLETT was the son of William BARTLETT b abt 1722 Westmoreland Co, VA; Will d 1804 Loudoun Co, VA which includes Garner among other children.
