Bruce! Cambria was a small incorporated town bordering on the north side of Christiansburg, VA. It was annexed by Christiansburg sometime between 1965-1970. It was originally called "Bangs", and built up around the train station there. The natives from there still call it Cambria and proud of it. Good morning folks, Can anyone shed any light on this family? Social Security info indicates that John Audrey Murdock, son of John Alexander Murdock and Martha Ann Hess, was born in a place identified as 'Cambria, VA' in 1912. He died in Radford in 1979. The Virginia GNIS returns only a place known as 'Cambria Cave' in Montgomery County. Thanks, Bruce Murduck <[email protected]>

Hello! I have not been a member of this list long. I am looking for a Robert BOWLING who was of military age in 1777, in VA. I need any info available for the Robert BOWLING who was in the Rev War from VA. He is listed in Todd BOLIN's book very briefly.: " Robert BOWLING in 1777 was a private in a Virginia Company, Revolutionary War. (42) Robert BOIWLING in 1778 was in the 3rd Virginia Regiment, company Number 2. (353)" The references were for "Records of the Revolutionary War" by William T. Saffell and Joseph T. McAllister, 1894, reprint 1969. And Ibid, by Saffell, 1913. I don't know if he lived to apply for a pension or not. He was not listed in Virgil White's Rev War pension abstracts under the spelling of BOWLING. However, many varient spellings of this surname have been used down through the years by other families. I have not been able to check other spellings in White's book. Thank you so much. Any info on this Robert will be appreciated. Joanne in California [email protected]
Births were required to be recorded at each county and city throughout VA starting in 1853 and ending in 1896. A couple cities continued the practice after 1896. Before 1853, there was no legal requirement that births be recorded. The births were recorded in a large book called a birth register. Each year, each county and city had to send a copy of the birth register to Richmond, and these still survive. At some point the Bureau of Vital statistics made an index containing all births reported in all counties and cities from 1853 through 1896. The index and a copy of all the birth registers are located at the Library of VA in Richmond. This means that even though a courthouse may have burned, say in 1900, destroying all records prior to that time, the copy of the birth register sent to Richmond survived. The same is true of the death registers for the same period of time (1853-1896). Also, starting in 1853 when marriage licenses were first issued, a copy of the marriage register was sent to Richmond each year. Since Marsha lives in WV, I should also point out the registers for counties that are now a part of WV are also in Richmond for the period 1853 - 1862 or 1863. Based on experience with my various families lines, I'd say no more than 70 - 80% of the births were reported, and no more than 50 - 60% of the deaths were reported. However, this varied from family to family. William seems to be a deserting Hessian Soldier from Savanna GA in July l982. I have considerable info on the Hessian but need birth date or city/country of origin on William SEVERS. Expense is not a primary concern on this and I would appreciate ANY suggestions or assistance. I have looked for an indenture or oath of allegiance without success. Is it possible there might be a newspaper (l793) account or any document that he might have given his birthdate or age, etc. His age calculates birth at l752 and the Hessian was Feb l751. I suspect the l751 English Calender might change that date to Feb l752 due to the change to Gregorian Calender when, in fact, Germany changed years before and the date needed no change. I have good Computer and Genealogical sources in Louisville, KY at my access and will be, also, glad to exchange research or cash for any assistance. Charles Severs Louisville, Ky
Listmembers, Is there anyone who would be willing to do a marriage look-up at the Pulaski Co. Courthouse??? I'm seeking the parents from the marriage between Mary Bentley Whitt and Beverly Paris Ratcliff which took place on 9/28/1904 in Radford, VA. There is possibility that it may be recorded in Pulaski Co.; so, I'm posting this to both Pulaski list and Montgomery list. Many Thanks, Doug Lovell in Ohio [email protected]
