To All: I recently stopped and took a picture of the Old Shot Tower on New River.. and have placed it on my web site so others can see it without having to make the trip! I understand the shot tower had a shaft dug down to the level of the river and a tunnel through which boats could be brough in to collect the shot. Molten lead was poured through screens at the top of the tower and the hot lead particles fell to the bottom, turning into round shot before hitting the cold water which chilled it, retaining the shape.. The lead was mined nearby in Wythe County, Va.. Many people who apparently owned no land in the area very likely were employed in the mining and smelting operations.. Go to my website and click on "Scenes" to see this and other pictures of Southwest Va.. http://hearlshill.freeservers.com/index.html Thanks for Your Time, G. Is the given name GRANVILLE a commonly used name in the Chafin/Chaffin family? I have two men named Granville Akers, born within about two years of each other in the early 1860s, one in Floyd Co. and the other in Montgomery Co. One has a Chafin/Chaffin mother and I THINK the other has a Chafin/Chaffin grandmother, but that connection is not quite proven. An affirmative answer to this question would help me prove it! Thanks and best wishes, Earl Earl B. Akers, Sr. Puyallup WA The Banyan Tree

I just received a copy of the marriage certificate for Joseph Whepherd and Mollie Whittaker on Sept 20, 1898. It has the parents as "P.C. and T. Shepherd" and "H.C. and Eliz. Whittaker". I know "Eliz" is going to be Elizabeth, but the other initials aren't real helpful. Would anyone know anything about this family? What are the full names of the parents? Any other details? Anything would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn Ramsey

I am interested in the late 1700's or early 1800's WOOD family possibly in the area that later became Floyd County.
searching John Lowder Hello Searchers: I'm new to this list as I've just found that a John Lowder is listed in the Military REcords: VA in the Rev War, Montgomery County. Can some good soul give me a few tips on where I might search for Rev War records or vital statistic info for the 1700-1779. Family lore is that JOhn served in the REv War. My John was married to a Hannah (no maiden name known) and had children: Catherine, Caleb, John Jr, Rachel, Rebekah, and JOseph by 1776 and more later. WE know the family was in North Carolina by 1780 and joined the Quakers (we can find no record of them being Quakers before this date)--but then returned to Virginia in the early 1800s. Thank you so much for your time.

Hello all: I got a lead on a 4g grandmother (Calia Butcher) living in Nottoway Co, VA. I Found her listed on the 1850 census with her children but below her name it said " on the land of Martha Jones". Would Calia been considered a freed black person because she was listed on the "regular" census and not the slave schedule? Also, she had 100 dollars worth of real estate. Can someone explain this to me and what should my next step be to find the husband of Calia? Calia had more kids and my 3g grandmother was born 1875 in Nottoway. Thank you for your time. Angela

20 Apr 2001 - My GtGtGt Grandparents William and Drucilla (Kemp) Mills who married in Franklin County in 1815, were last noted in the 1860 Pulaski County, VA Census, he at age 77, a laborer, born in Virginia, with wife Drucilla, living next door to their youngest son, Thomas Richard Mills and wife Sarah (Nunnally) Mills. Neither were noted in the 1870 Census. Montgomery County death records reflect Drucilla's death on Jun 12, 1867. No death record or will has been located for William and research in the VA State Library reveals that death records for the years 1865, 1868, 1869, and 1870 were missing. William and Drucilla were the parents of 9 children (7 sons and 2 daughters). Two sons, including my GtGt Grandfather Robert Wiley Mills and William Breckenridge Mills, were kia during the Civil War; two others, Sparrell Mills and Thomas Richard Mills were POWs. Sparrell is assumed to have died in Montgomery County between 1890 - 1900; Thomas Richard died in Montgomery County April 5, 1915. Following numerous trips to VA and combing of old long abandoned cemeteries, none was ever found to be the family plot for these Mills ancestors. However, several years ago, an elderly surviving cousin advised me they were all in the old Pepper Cemetery... which initiated another lengthy research effort. This past week, another of my Mills cousins from Richmond finally managed to locate this old burial ground... long ago forgotten. Although it appears we again did not locate my ancestors, perhaps there are those on this list who may recognize a connection to their ancestry... "We talked about the "Pepper Cemetery" located on the Pulaski County side of the Pulaski County/Montgomery County line. After I finally got into and walked around this cemetery I am pretty well convinced that our relatives would have been buried on the Montgomery side of the "New River". There were very few headstones (or even piled up rocks) in this cemetery. The headstones I could read are listed below: Eliza Ratcliffe, b. May 20, 1844, d. Oct. 24, 1917 Andrew Ratcliffe, b. ?, d. Dec. 26, 1881 John Cofer, b. Oct. 29, 1812, d. Jan. 7, 1888 Frances Pepper, b. ?, d. Nov 22, 1841 Of course, the snowing all day and the very cold temperatures were not conducive to me lingering just to meander around. " Edward E. Mills
