James Madison Harwell was indeed the son of James M. Harwell and Sarah Tanner as you show. James M. Harwell was born c1796 in Mecklenburg Co, one of 10 children of Major James Harwell. Major James Harwell was the brother of Captain Grief Harwell (my ancestor), he married Rebecca Barner, daughter of John and Elizabeth Barner of Brunswick County. The two brothers moved to Mecklenburg from Brunswick County in the 1790's and were sons of James Harwell who died in 1770. His will which is on file on the Brunswick site names all of his children (Grief and James and 5 sisters). I have a lot of info on this family which goes on back to James's (who died 1770) father - Long Samuel Harwell (whose 1767 will is also on file at the Brunswick) site and his father who was Thomas Harwell of Prince George Co. Will be happy to share, contact me by e-mail. I also havesome info on all of James M. Harwell's siblings and some descendants. Glad to learn a bit more about James Madison Harwell and his whereabouts. Regards, Charles Harvell
