Dear list, While I was going over the Court Order Books for Mecklenburg county this afternoon, I came upon a rather humorous notation. In Order Book 10 on page 443, Samuel Puryear is being named surveyor of a particular road. Next to his name in parenthesis is the following, "Samuel Puryear (snuff nose)". As any of you know, the order books, while fascinating, are also pretty stuffy. It took me by surprise. I even had one of the archivists read it to verify that I was not seeing it wrong.
