I have just come back from Mecklenburg Co. no wiser, necessarily, than when I went. The purpose of my visit was to see if I could discover what the relationship was between Obadiah SMITH, grandson of Obadiah SMITH who made a suit against the heirs of Alexander ROBERTS (who died 1781 in Meck. Co.) and his wife Martha SMITH ROBERTS. In Halifax Co. there is a marriage bond for Alexander ROBERTS and Martha SMITH (widow is written in but evidently some think that SMITH is also her maiden name date of bond is1758). In Lunenburg Co. Luke SMITH Jr. dies in 1757/58 and his wife is Martha. I found enough to know that this is the right Martha SMITH but found nothing to indicate what her maiden name was. Can any one help?
