    1. [VAMECKLE] Map of Mecklenburg County Ca. 1864
    2. Kent A. Elam, Jr.
    3. Thanks to everyone who responded to my post concerning the map of Mecklenburg County. Special thanks to Tom Cole for having the information on where to find the map. If anyone else is interested in the map this is the information I received in an e-mail to the Gift Shop of the Virginia Historical Society: Dear Mr. Elam, Thank you for your interest in the Gilmer maps in the collection of the Virginia Historical Society. We have reproduced 75 of the maps and we do have the Mecklenburg County, 1864 map. We also have another map listed as Mecklenburg, Brunswick and Greensville Counties, 1864. The maps are reproduced on a heavy, buff paper and are quite nice. The cost of each map is $30.00 plus $5.00 shipping. (Add $1.35 tax per map if you are a Virginia resident.) You may send an order and a check to: Virginia Historical Society, 428 North Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23220, Attention: Museum Shop. If you would like to give us a call and order over the phone, you may call 804-342-9671. If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know. Sincerely, Museum Shop Manager Thanks again, Kent Elam

    1. [VAMECKLE] Hicks family
    2. Joanne Harley
    3. I am trying to find a Sarah Hicks. She was first married to a John DONALDSON in SC before the Rev. War. During the war, they moved to NC, just across the state line and Donaldson bought a lot of property. They had three sons, John,Peter, William. John D. must have gotten sick, for he made a will and died in 1781, during the war. The widow then married DANIEL HICKS, who had known John Donaldson in the war. Hicks sells all of Sarah's property, and they disappear from the area, all but the oldest son, John, who moves back to SC and marries. I stumbled across DANIEL HICKS filing for his pension in Mecklenburg Co.,1832 and again trying to get bounty land for his past service in the war in 1855. I could not find him on the 1850 census of Mecklenburg. I am trying to find his wife, Sarah, and her two boys. They must have returned with him to his family home in Brunswick Co. and then moved to Mecklenburg Co. Any help with running down Sarah will be much appreciated. 3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------E60FABCEF6EC3B50DBCFFC27 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The description of the map sounds as if it is a copy from the Gilmer series of Civil War maps. This series contains maps made in 1864 for many (most?) counties of Virginia. Copies are available for viewing at the State Library of Virginia. Copies can be purchased from the Virginia Historical Society. I recently purchased one for Nottoway County, VA for $30. They are available by mail. You might try the Virginia Historical Society web site for a mailing address. Tom Cole "Kent A. Elam, Jr." wrote: > Dear List, > > I have a copy of "Life by the Roaring Roanoke" by Susan L. Bracey.
