Hello Flinns: I saw your email on the Mecklenburg Rootweb site and was suprised to see the name of James Madison Flinn. He is also in our line. The one I have is married to Jane Sophia Lane rather that Margaret Groves. Our James Madison Flinn was the son of William Flinn and North American Tatum. This line comes down from Lauglin Flinn in early 1600 VA thru Squire Flinn in Iowa to Larry Finnn my wife's father. They were from Perry Co. Iowa. Because of the same rather unusual name I would like to see what your line looks like. Larry Flinn and Isabel Wimmell were divorced about 1946-7. Isabel, my mother in law, would not give me any information about him, so when our daughter was born, I wanted to fill in her mother's side of the family and went to SLC where I researched the family. Before I got that far I wrote letters to every Flinn in the Perry Co, IA area in Oct. and did not hear anything until the next March. Then I got a letter from one of Larry's sisters, who was delighted to make contact and put me in touch with 3 more sisters and another brother. They had a reunion in May and sent my wife, Nancy Ellen Flinn, a scrap book they had put together with pictures of her father with her and much more. She had never known her father. So with those leads I went to SLC and was able to trace at least one line of her family to Wales in 800 AD. The family was tied in with the Morris line, which was derived from the Celtic Rys and Mars + Mor-ris. If we could find some common relatives I would be glad to share what I have. Would be glad to hear from you. William, I read you post with interest. We have a Thomas Fletcher Adams in our files. He married in Granville County, NC on the 18 August 1868, Phebe Ann Flinn, daughter of James Madison Flinn and Margaret "Peggy" Graves Flinn. Phebe is sister to our GrGrGrandfather. We also have a Julia Graves (sister to "Peggy") but we have her married 17 July 1849 to Stephen Spain. Could this be the same Julia and a second marriage? I never knew Fletcher and Phebe Adams but my grandmother used to talk about them. She referred to them as Uncle Fletcher and Aunt Phebe. They use to live in a log cabin near West Creek in Amelia County. The house was still standing a few years ago. I am not sure about now. The Flinn's and Adams came to Amelia County from Mecklenburg. They had lived in that part of Mecklenburg on the border with Granville County, NC and were tennant farmers so they moved back and forth across the border. Some of them attended church in Townsville, NC and there are some of our ancestors buried there. Aunt Phebe and Uncle Fletcher did not have any children of their own. They did raise a black girl like she was their own. She thought of them as her family. I do not recall her name or why they raised her. Phebe and Fletcher Adams are buried in the Amelia Presbyterian Church cemetery at Amelia Court House, Virginia. I hope this helps you some and we would be interested in any information you can send us so we can fill in some information on Uncle Fletcher. Perhaps there may be other connections. The only John Thompson listed in the Mecklenburg Co Marriage Bond records for 1811-1853 is John W. (no Jr or Sr) whose marriage bond to Jane Graves is dated 20 March 1844. The Surety was Samuel Dedman. In the 1765-1810 marriage bonds, there are four John Thompsons. (No other name for any of them.) Bond date 8 May 1775 to Sarah Thompson, surety Asa Oliver; bond date 12 Jan 1795 to Phoebe Tisdale, surety William Thompson; bond date 13 Apr 1801 to Nancy Burnett; surety, Richard Burnett, minister William Creath; bond date 12 Oct 1807 to Mary Sally [properly Mary Salle'], surety Stephen P'Pool. Hope there's something here that helps. For those with specific interest in the Buffalo Creek area: _Temporarily_ uploaded to the below site is a map of the Buffalo Creek area of Mecklenburg. I have joined portions of 4 USGS 7.5 quadrangle maps and considerably reduced the quality for file size purposes. The 4 quadrangles are: Buffalo Springs, Nelson, Clarksville North, and Clarksville South. Note: it is a large file and will be slow downloading for most. I see a reference to John Mays. I may be an anscestor of that person. I am descended from a John Mayes of Mecklenburg Co.--at least, his will was probated there and is on the website. But because Mecklenburg was split from Lunenburg in 1765, I figured I might have to go to Lunenburg to trace his birth and perhaps his marriage. The Mayeses (John Granderson Mayes, son of John ? Mayes above) went to KY between 1800 and 1805, and were known for founding churches (Presbyterian to my knowledge). If you'd like to follow up, I'd be glad to correspond and have run on to others who are doing research for Mayeses in Mecklenburg Co. Sincerely, Fred Mayes, Jr. White81429@aol.com wrote: > > No Talley in Lunenburg after 1764----Gene, the southern half of Lunenburg Co > VA was known as St James Parish, roughly below Meherrin River to NC State > line. Hello, & " Happy Thanksgiving ", Here are two sites which helps with some research, especially involving a social security number. http://www.informus.com/ssnlkup.html This one gives you usually within two years the year and state a number was issued. It also has some other things to help. http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search/ssdi_index.asp You do not have to have the ss # , search by name, issued state, birth date, etc. Since it's Thanksgiving and many families will be together for the weekend, especially with some of the older family members, now would be a good time to ask a few questions, take some notes, maybe record some stories and information from those people who still remember what we are looking for. Dear List, Several months ago someone from the list shared a URL for a website that allowed the visitor to locate a USGS 7.5 minute topography map by entering a watercourse or other known reference. I have somehow lost that URL and I was hoping that the generous soul would once again be willing to forward that web address to me. I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone on this.
