Thanks Linda. As long as I'm the contributing editor, the article will be up. I"ll check out your website this afternoon, I still have to put up Native American links on the page. No, all of my family is from southside, Virginia (at least as far as I can tell so far!) Hi Loretta, Thanks much. This is exactly what I need to know. Linda
Hi, Thanks for all of you who sent me information on native american research. I am truly surprised and grateful for all of the responses. One thing that i wanted to say is that I was really interested in having the names of those native groups that might have been located in your county at one time. I know I did not make this clear. I got some wonderful responses that pointed me in directions that I would not have gone and information on links that I did not know about. Again thanks, Linda Looking for Harrison, Moore and Jones in Charlotte and Mecklenburg Counties.
Linda, To add to your research, I did a short article on Virginia Native Americans (mostly on the Algonquin tibes) on Suite101.com. The article is located at: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/colonial_america/33118 I cited my sources, one of which was a book on Native Americans in Virginia. Hope it helps Jeannine Dugan -----Original Message----- From: linda threadgill <linda-s-t@webtv.net> To: VAMECKLE-L@rootsweb.com <VAMECKLE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, March 22, 2000 10:31 PM Subject: [VAMECKLE] native american research Hi, Thanks for all of you who sent me information on native american research. Linda: The Richmond Times Dispatch recently ran a great series on Virginia Native Americans. Perhaps the reporters who did the research could be helpful. I am sure you can find out who they are by calling the paper. Harry Johnson
Hi, Can someone tell me how I go about doing native american research in this county? Thanks Linda
Hi Linda, Don't know if it does much good, but my mother was native american and the only way I could trace her was through her birth certif. There are not that many tribes in Virginia but they are listed on internet. The tribes around Mecklenburg are Pamunkey,Mattopini,Chickhominy,Cherokee. Each reservation has a phone number I think. If I can be of help let me know. Loretta
Anyone researching these folks?-----In Mecklenburg Co VA, Rachel Hite Roberts(widow) wrote her will on 29 April 1799 (processed 12 Oct 1801). In the will Rachel leaves items to her Granddaughter Susannah Hyde and Susannah's daughter Elizabeth Sangford Hyde(Sanford?-grear grand). All items lent to Susannah for her life time were to go to Elizabeth at Susannah's death. Francis Hester and Charles Hester witnessed the writing of the will. When the will was processed in 1801, Stephen Pettypool made oath with Howel Graves, his security, to replace Francis Hester who relinquisted his rights as adminstrator of the will. On 16 Nov 1801 an inventory of Rachel's estate (7 items) was filed by Daniel Durham(Duncan?of Caswell Co NC?), James Hester and James Williams. The index to Rachel's husband's(John Roberts) will (early 1790's) listing her as his heir. No reference to Joseph Hite in any of the documents I saw. It appears the legatee (Elizabeth "Hyde") was Rachel's great- granddaughter. Rachel Hite Roberts husband was John Roberts whose will was dated 11/23/1792 and recorded 9/10/1798. He names his wife (Rachel Hite Roberts) as his executor and left his entire estate to her. The will was witnessed by Francis Hester, James Kendrick and Hezekiah Tabor. Hi, I'm searching for the Pearson family that lived on a farm in South Hill, starting in the late 1800's. There was aa farm owned by Leonard Thomas and his wife Tinsey Winn. They had a daughter, Rhoda Ann Thomas, Leonard died in 1842 and Tinsey stayed on the farm. Later Rhoda married John Ira Drury Pearson and he became overseer on the farm. He died during the Civil War, in 1862 but Tinsey and Rhoda and the Pearson children stayed at the farm. I'm hoping to make a connection with this Pearson branch. My father was born in Mecklenburg Co, but his father, Stephen son of John and Rhoda, was not a farmer. Wonder if any Pearsons still farm there? Charlotte Pearson Armstrong

Dawn, I don't know about the Mecklenburg map on line, but on a regular road map it's on I-85 just across the border from NC.When you leave NC on I-85 you cross Lake Gaston,or Bugg's Island, depending on which side of the state line you live on. As you enter the state of VA you should then see South Hill near the line. Hope this helps some. Richard
