Hi Dawn, My familiy is predominantly from the counties that I mentioned and I have some of those surnames in my family. There are several of us who are doing research in that area so we kind of have a group website. Most of the name that you mentioned we share in one way or the other. The website address is http://members.tripod.com/~Linda_T . Remember, Sussex was once part of Surry and many of the families lived in that area before going further west and south. My maiden name is Stith. :) I am looking in the Mecklenburg and Charlotte county area because my husband's Harrisons are from there. All that you have to do is check any of the archives, genweb or rootsweb and you will find the names that I mentioned. If you subscribe to either Ancestry or Family Tree Maker Websites, then you can do a search there. I have a copies of Civil War maps of Southampton and Sussex County. The Wells family had a farmer near Stoney Creek and one not far from the Greensville and Dinwiddie County lines. Also, many families from your area migrated to southern NC. Some families settled in the Union and Anson Counties areas. Some of the other surnames that you will find in Sussex County are Mason, Vaughan, Ingram, Maclin, Harrison, Tucker, Goodwyn, Jackson, Winfield, Hicks, Turner, Dillard, Bailey, Newsom, WEstbrook, Magee, Parham, Wrenn, Eppes, Freeman, Robinson, Fields, Hunt, Parsons, Parker, Prince, Chappell, Carroll to name a few. :) Linda
Oh, I forgot to mention that you will also find the Brown and Richardson surnames there too. Linda http://members.tripod.com/~Linda_T
To Mecklenburg Co.,VA listers, I have quite a bit of research needed in Mecklenburg Co., court house. Need copies made for documents found, etc. I believe I have the correct dates and names for my lookups. I wondered if there are volunteers who would help or paid researchers who would help. And of course I would pay all fees needed to do the research. Any one interested please let me know, thanks. Charlotte A.
Have you tried looking in Sussex, Southampton, Dinwiddie and Greensville Counties? Both surnames are found in these counties. Linda

Charles, I was glad that I could help you with the Allen's Creek location in Mecklenburg County, Va.! Are you related to the Talley family....or know anything about this family?? Apparently the Talleys and my Netherys were close neighbors and friends during the Civil War era and earlier. Henry Talley, who was in 2nd Co. G, 14th Virginia Infantry, Armistead's Brigade, C.S.A., wrote letters home from the field to his mother. Several times, he mentioned my great grandfather, GEORGE D. NETHERY, who was in the same Confederate unit with Talley. The latter would simply say something to the effect...."Tell the Netherys that George is doing fine", etc. In one letter, he asked his mother to send some clothes over to Mrs. Nethery to have them mended. The "Mrs. Nethery" would have been my great, great grandmother, and George Nethery's mother, Sarah Smith Nethery (ca. 1792 - 1876). If you know anything about HENRY TALLEY....or if anyone who gets this message does....I would appreciate hearing from you!! The place where the Talleys and Netherys were living was in Mecklenburg, southeast of Clarksville, near the Granville County, North Carolina line. At least, I think this is right?! Thanks to whomever can help me!!! Sincerely, Marshall Neathery At 10:14 AM 4/2/00 EDT, you wrote: >Henry Talley and John Hight owned land on Buckhorn Ck off S. Could someone please tell me what records have been published--and anything that is still available for purchase--for Mecklenburg Co? I am interested in MORGAN, STOKES, HANES(Haynes, etc) and JACKSON Thank you, Carolyn Smotherman
Joshua Morgan, along with his wife, Beth/Elizabeth, and son Carey, received land in Mecklenburg Co, VA about 1780 from her parents, Charles and Mary Clay. They later had other children--Rolly Morgan, Nancy Morgan Rodgers, Elizabeth Morgan Beauford, and Samuel Morgan (1794-1824). Joshua's name is not on the Mecklenburg tax lists after 1796. The sons show up in Rutherford Co, TN in 1817. Where were they in the meantime? Thanks for any help. Carolyn Odle Smotherman

The headwaters of Allens Creek begin on the north side of Virginia Highway 47, some 3 miles east of Chase City, Virginia, and in the Scott's Crossroads Community. Allens Creek then meanders southerly through the geographical center of Mecklenburg County, east of the town of Boydton, where U.S. Highway 58 crosses it. Several smaller creeks and branches empty into Allens Creek, such as Long Branch, Laytons Creek, Coleman's Creek, etc. Virginia Highway 4 crosses Allens Creek about three miles northwest of John H. Kerr Dam. The Creek empties into the Roanoke River just northeast of the John H. Kerr Dam, in the vicinity of Buggs Island (actual island) that is below the Dam. Hope this helps. J.
