Sally, Check the Library of VA's web site. An index is there so you you can find out whether your ancestor had a Chancery record. The index indicates whether the record is filmed or not. The records I wanted to see were not filmed. After checking their site for what it would cost to have the library make the copies, I decided we would arrange to be in Richmond at some time. I live in CA so it isn't a short trip. Even then it was not inexpensive. After you prove you are trustworthy, prove you are you, put anything you brought into the room with you in a locker, the help will give you a form. Pencil only. You order the file you wish. No more than 3 files at a time. If you want a copy, the help makes the copy. These are original papers, many over 200 years old. Good luck. We were in the Louisa County Courthouse basement in October this year. The Chancery Records were there and they (people from Washington I think)were working on getting ready to put them in a format to access through the internet. My husband and I looked up one of my ancestors by name and the folder was over an inch thick with original papers, I was truly surprised. We had a couple of hours and it would have taken days to look at it all. The man there working on it all said it would not be long before it would be available. We decided to wait.
