Many thanks to Ruby for the information about Sheriff Thomas Johnson. My wife descends through his daughter Rebecca Johnson who married Joseph Winston. Their daughter Mary Johnson Winston (1804-1866) married John Todd Quarles (1805-1866), who was the son of John Quarles and Rebecca Minor. This John Quarles, by the way, was the brother of the Anne Quarles who was first married to Henry Washington and was the mother of Anne Catherine Harriet Washington that Ruby notes was married to Thomas Johnson sheriff's son. John and Anne Quarles were the children of James Quarles and Mary Pryor. James Quarles lived in Albemarle County (and was member of the Committee of Safety and sheriff for Albemarle) and then moved to Fluvanna County. He and son Robert Quarles were in the Revolutionary War. Does anyone know where this John Todd Quarles and wife Mary Johnson Winston are buried? They lived just across the river in Orange County on their plantation called "Woodlawn" but I've never been able to locate their graves. The Quarles family history was rather sad, both parents dying in 1866 (obit written by John Todd Quarles's nephew Gen William A. Quarles). John and Mary's children John Minor Quarles and Virginia Minor Quarles both died in July 1864 of typhus --I suspect after battle of Trevilians. Their brother Mercer Winston Quarles also died in July 1864. He was a physician and is buried in Louisa, but I have never been able to locate the family plot on "Woodlawn" where the parents John Todd Quarles and Mary Johnson Winston and their two children are buried. Many thanks. Jay Lieske
