Marie - Its my understanding after doing research in Virginia for a LONG time (don't want to give away all my secrets) that Lord and Lady Fairfax died in England. He returned at the beginning of the American Revolution. Also, their home was much closer to Mt. Vernon than to Fairfax - something makes me think that it is near Ft. Belvoir... Actually I think I learned this reading a recent history about Mary Washington - I know that they were 'neighbors' of Lord and Lady Fairfax (who died young), and often visited by carriage or horseback - and its a LONG carriage ride from Mt. Vernon to Braddock Rd. I lived right on Braddock Rd. in Fairfax, almost on the Springfield line, in an old pre WWI farmhouse that we partially restored (ran out of $)... on an acre of land. We had to buy since renting was so expensive! But the school system was the best! Diane
