Laurel Hill Baptist Church was founded in 1868 in an unnamed neighborhood of Louisa County as the first Negro Church of the county in a brush arbor with the Rev. William Howe as pastor. Rev. Patrick Henry Graves born 1840 near Mineral, helped with the organization. He was baptized by Rev. William Jones and joined the Elk Creek Church (white) whose minister was Dr. Littleberry Haley. The church was named after the arm where Rev. Graves was reared, owned by Miss Clary L. Garland, who gave the land for the church. The present church was built 1870-1876. p. 72, Louisa County, Va. 1742-1992, 250th Anniversary. The church is located off Rt. 652 not far from its intersection with Rt. 700 near the North Anna River.
