I do not know who the parents of James Quarles were. He was born in 1737 and died in 1824. In 1767 he moved from King William County to Albemarle County where he bought property. He also lived in Fluvanna County after the Revolution and died at his daughter Ann (Quarles) Washington Tinsley's place in Goochland County. James Quarles was married to Mary Pryor and they had four children that I know: Robert Quarles (who married Patsy Minor), John Quarles (who married Rebecca Minor), Thomas Quarles, and Ann Quarles who first married Henry Washington and then married John Tinsley. The Minor girls were sisters and daughters of Garrett Minor and his wife Mary Overton Terrell of Louisa County. I'd love to find out who the parents of James are. The pension file records in the National Archives apparently include some information of this James Quarles but also include information for another James Quarles of King William County. The key may be a granddaughter of a James Quarles by the name of Elizabeth Quarles (born about 1800) who was the second wife of John Pryor (his first wife ran off with a "French dancing instructor" according to the Richmond Enquirer and became the mother of the well-known John C. Fremont). Elizabeth (Quarles) Pryor was about 50 years younger than her husband Col. John Pryor. After Pryor's death she married A. Lake and then moved to Boston. Her letters are in the National Archives pension file for James Quarles. I'm not certain she's the granddaughter of "my" James Quarles, so that's why I mention that there may be several James Quarleses who are intertwined in the National Archives files. Best wishes. -Jay Lieske
